The Battlefield 1943 community challenge to unlock the "Coral Sea" map is a go -- that is, for those who can get into a game. The bonus battlefield will unlock as soon as the individual communities on Xbox 360 and PS3 reach a body count of 43 million. We'd give you the current kill count as of this writing, but it's jumped nearly 50K in this brief time. The corpses are piling up fast!
If someone with math skills wants to track the figures over the next day or so and give us a rough estimate of when they estimate the map should unlock, we won't hold it against you. Once "Coral Sea" opens up, if should include an "Air Superiority game mode." Get killin', folks, who knows if there'll be another carrot dangled in front of us when this challenge is done. We hope there will be.
Update: As of 12:19PMEST on 7/13/09 -- Xbox 360: 30,102,476; PS3: 16,434,208 [Thanks, Doug]

I did not. I wanted to. It took me 5 attempts to get into a game and then when I got into the game finally, the level had all sorts of texture problems going on and screen tearing issues, so I had to leave. Tried to get back in after that with zero success.

It looks like both will make it in less than 20 days, which is amazing considering how many people can't play...

It works for 360 now. First day it was out it was horrible, second was a little better, and today there are absolutely no problems, atleast on my end.

It worked for about three straight rounds before I was kicked off and unable to login thereafter (this was probably about 1230 am). So I went back to playing Fallout 3 for the rest of the evening.

I'm getting all nostalgic playing this game.
It's kinda like making love to an ex-girlfriend who's gotten slightly better at putting on make-up and whose breast surgery turned out very nice indeed. And of course she promises to show you some new tricks if you can pleasure her 43 million times. :p

I concur, I will also add that this game is better than most retail games.

Now, if only I can not get disconnected from every time I try to play...
I spent 1200 points on it, but I have yet to actually get passed the menu screen

So me, some friends, and a bunch of random players tried to set up a private match (which requires 16 players before it'll let you start??) last night and after 20 minutes of trying to get people to stay we finally filled the room -- only to have EVERYONE get booted when the host started the game. And it wasn't a normal boot, the player grid just disappeared and left the rest of the PM interface on screen leaving you to ponder as to if the game was actually DOING anything. It wasn't and the effort was completely wasted.

I've only managed to play one game, when I was the only one in my party. Every time I tried to join with my 2 friends, we couldn't find a game or would lose the squad list like Storm said. That really sucks, as my friends have spend about 8 hours now trying to play a game together. Oh well, if it's this busy I guess the 360 will win hands down.

Well from the kill rate you could also assume that 360 players die alot easier than PS3 guys.

Or that PS3 players are much less efficient at killing targets ;)

Exactly. Though PS3 owner's may just be winning through flag captures.

I love this game so far. It sucks when you have to try a few times to get a match, but it has rarely taken more than a minute this afternoon. I like that the classes have been simplified and the lack of unlockable weapons. I'm also really excited to have a fun online multiplayer game on the hard drive. Now I can switch back and forth between BF1943 and Halo 3 with my friends without having to stop and swap discs.

Getting flags and keeping them wins the game, snipers are just a minor annoyance. I just tried the demo now and i got twice as many kills and flag points as 2nd place guy, playing as infantry and mostly using tanks. ;)
But yeah i agree on the planes being a waste of time without a mouse and keyboard to control them.

Well, to be honest its not bad for a "free" game, actually its quite good. Its just not the same battlefield to me though. No one works together,at all. I mean i know the same could be felt of in BF2, but in this game, theres really no need for team work. Along with the "super powers" or what ever the hell they called them it just wasnt my cup o' tea.

Assuming the 360 users continue to average 10,000 kills per hour (and that means the game's fanbase can never die off), that would be 4,300 hours to get 43,000,000 kills. 4,300 hours = 179.166 days. We're looking at the 360 community unlocking this in January of 2010.

I don't think that will be a problem. The 360 knocked out 5 million kills on the first day of release.

This game is a sham. How EA can be allowed to release a game onto XBLA that clearly isnt working for many people days after release is wrong.
Microsoft should never have permitted this. I and many others will be thinking twice before jumping in at launch with anymore EA affiliated products.

So is it the PS3 version or 360 version having issues?
From reading theses comments it seems the 360 version is the one with issues.
I messed about on the PS3 trial last night and it was fairly enjoyable, I'll probably pick it up tonight if the PS3 version is okay.
