Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Amie recently talked to Fast Company about the mysterious Wii Vitality Sensor, saying, "All I can tell you is, with the game developers that we have, we will bring forth an experience that you will say, 'Wow, I get it.'"
Curious, we took a quick poll of internet luminaries (and Joystiq staffers) as to what they thought the first thing out of their mouth would be if they saw the Wii Vitality Sensor games. Who will be right? Only time will tell.
Ludwig Kietzmann: "Does it come with an apathy sensor too?"
Alexander Sliwinski: "Someone's checking their blood pressure, like the kiosk at the supermarket!"
Shipwreck, Cheap Ass Gamer: "Where's my receipt?"
James Ransom-Wiley: "What happens when I clip it to my magic finger?"
Ben Kuchera, Ars Technica: "You know, I'm done being angry at or skeptical of Nintendo. Every time I think they're doing something stupid they sell five hojillion copies of their newest concept. So sadly, I believe him."
Justin McElroy: "Hey, how'd I get to the Nintendo booth? Did I make a wrong turn at Capcom?"
Kyle Orland, Crispy Gamer: "Vomit?"
Cheapy D, Cheap Ass Gamer: "Wow, I won't get it."

This HAS to be bundled with an absolute, must-own game in order to get people excited or even think about purchasing this... thing. There is no other way people will jump on this one.

Think outside the box. How about a survival horror game that monitors your own heart rate to affect your character? That sounds kind of like a cool use.

That does sound cool, cept I doubt they could do that really well on the wii, I mean the only game that has characters change expression during sequences and what not is Uncharted & Uncharted 2

I've played a Wii, and I wasn't impressed. I just don't get it. Yet, my mother has one. My MOTHER. My going-on-60-year-old mother, who wouldn't touch a video game controller if her life depended on it, has a Wii.
I still don't get it, but there it is.

but sales isnt the point, reggie was saying they'll have stuff that will make you get it, big sales wont do that, so what's the point?

What are you saying, that people will just say "oh wow" and walk on by? Of *course* sales are the point. Or, more clearly, the point is, they come up with something, people say "oh wow" and buy it by the truckload, resulting in... mass sales.
My POV (and I believe that of Kuchera as well, which is why I quoted it), is that I look at these things and think "That'll never work", and yet somehow, they get everyone saying "Oh wow, I get it; I must buy this." I thought that about the Wii itself -- I *still* think that about the Wii, and yet the most non-videogame-person I know personally bought one. I thought that about the Wii Fit, and yet people are still buying that up in droves.
If sales aren't technically "the point" (which, with Nintendo being a business, I'd argue it most certainly *is*), then it's certainly a key barometer to measure the effectiveness of Reggie's point, that you'll "get it". (Come on, you know when he says "get it", he doesn't just mean "understand it", but he wants you to "buy it".)

he already knows people are going to buy it, and i didnt mean the point of nintendo's organization or whatever just reggie' comment. Sales are not the point of what he said in this post, he said we'll get it, seeing sales does not make us get it.

Wasn't a pulse meter used with the Famicom with Tetris? That's one use-Tetris speeds up or slows down based on heart rate.

That's about all I would buy it for. Maybe another Eternal Darkness game, but that's it.
Of course, there's that little matter of me actually buying a Wii... I've had every Nintendo system but that one.

As others have pointed out, it could be used for horror games as well (I could see some sadistic game designers gleefully crafting their games to actually cause heart attaacks in their players. "The game so scary it can actually KILL you!" That's marketable!).
But it could be used as a lie detector of sorts, too. Think along the likes of like a Grand Theft Auto, where you're being questioned by police or whatnot. You could say whatever the heck you wanted as they interrogated you, and the vitality sensor would tell the game how "convincing" your story is.
Of course, this could be easy to get around by not paying attention to the game....
"Bad Cop": Tell me where she is, or I'll break your other arm!
You: "Hmm... what should I have for lunch?"
Sensor indicates that your statement is very convincing....

I think it all depends on how it is used. There is an similar Ipod accessory that measures your vitals while you exercise and chooses your music based on what you need at the moment. It can give you music to pump you up, music to coast on, or music to cool you down.
That's pretty awesome, and something like that in a game environment could be cool. Imagine a sniper game in which you genuinely had to calm your heart rate and fire between beats. Many things are possible.
If it is only used for exercising games, I won't have any use for it. I don't use my video game systems for that purpose. If some clever developer finds a great way to use it in an action game, I'll be there in a heartbeat (no pun intended).

Reminds me of the mini-sp02 machine i used when I was a medic. It could tell you when you are not getting enough oxygen, perhaps? LOL. I know those machines also measure your pulse, so I guess they can use in a horror game or something. I don't think those type of machines can measure blood pressure, though.

In defense of Wii Fit I actually found it really useful this year. I'm and avid ice hockey player and I have a regular wieghtlifting routine; then this year I had a hernia that needed surgery. After recovering Wii Fit was the perfect bridge between doing nothing for months and going back to hockey and the gym full time.
It's no substitute for a more tradtional workout but as a transition or entry level exercise program it was great. Very smartly designed and fun.

I don't get it.
I just don't get it.
Why does the Wii sell? What is so good about it?
Just please answer the question.
Its nothing but a gimmick and a toy. Its not even a real current generation console (thats according to the producer of Assassins Creed 2 when asked why no Wii port will be made)
Im not anti-Nintendo in anyway. I have always owned and stuck by Nintendo systems. Hell, I even bought a Wii and sold it after 7 months because I realized Nintendo isn't about games but gimmicks.
The resources put into this stupid toy could have been used for a HD upgrade or update the storage so games like Marvel vs Capcom 2 wouldn't be surpassing their system.
Ill give Nintendo one thing. They found a demographic and captured it.
Sony failed with its $400 price point bullshit even though its a superior system.
The 360 has its RROD and I don't feel like going through that.
They make big sales and I say more power to them.
Nintendo as a game company however has lost all credibility.

The thing is Legend that the Wii is a good system - and mind you I have been pretty critical of it at times. There are, without question, many good games on the Wii. The problem is that you have to sift through all the shovelware crap that the Wii library is flooded with.
And I blame that problem directly on Nintendo and there lack of quality certification - they'll let anything, including ports of seven year old PS2 games and internet flash games, be published to rake in licensing fees.
Again, there are some true gems on the system and I am very excited for Muramasa this year. I would not make it my only system, no doubt about that, but as a second (or third) system it's a wonderful change of pace. Zack and Wiki, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Galaxy, LOZ, Boom Blox, Madworld, House of the Dead are just a few of the titles that I've really enjoyed. And as I mentioned earlier Wii Fit was extremely useful to me as I made it back from surgery.
It's just the masses that go for the Carnival Games, Block Party, and all the other crappy minigame collections and generally give the system the bad rap it sometimes gets.

Guys, am I the only one that is seeing great potential for coregamers in this thing? I mean like imagine Resident Evil 5 (I know its not on the Wii) and you, as a core gamer are bored because its too easy and stuff. Now the sensor picks that up and spawns more enemys, creepier enemys, etc until your pulse truly is at 180!
You can get that concept of dynamic difficulty for a lot of games I imagine.
Am only I seeing this or is it just a stupid idea?

And this is just a stupid thing to say. Miley Cyrus and Jonad Brother sell a lot not because they are the best thing out there, but because they are well-marketed and well-produced. I don't care what kind of music you like or what you think art is, but there is no denying the production value in these acts. It's top notch, and just because you personally do not like it because it attacks what you believe is good music does not mean it is poorly made. It's actually extremely well-produced. Same thing with the Wii and the accessories. Just because they do not fit in "game culture", or they are not "hardcore," does not mean the products are not well made. They do the job well with regards to their audience, which is not the sad and vindictive group of video game snobs that hate the Wii so much.

Looking at the actual interview with Reggie and N'Gai:
N'Gai: "So I'm lacking imagination?"
Reggie: "And you're lacking the specific software example that undoubtedly will show exactly how it comes to life."
Reggie's answer is a "specific software example", meaning it could be just one single game that utilizes the Vitality Sensor. Of course keeping in mind that he can't say too much, Reggie may just be using the idea of "any one game" out of a number of games that utilize the Vitality Sensor.
Reggie: "But the fact is that Nintendo will continue to push the envelope on what a gaming experience is. Now, we're doing that, because as we showed, there are a 150 million consumers in the markets that we do business, that say they'd be interested in video games if they had the right content, but today don't play. Those are the consumers that we believe something like the Vitality Sensor with the right software could compel to get in the game."
Nintendo is branching out to find other markets/demographics that don't follow the norm of casual/traditional/hardcore gaming. However, the term "right software" is used in place of "right games". "Software" is more connotative with a concept or application rather than a "traditionally console-based game". "Software" includes non-traditional console-based games such as WiiFit.
My personal opinion, I'm just interested to see what it's used for. The Eternal Darkness idea sounds awesome. But man I just know it's gonna get so much finger crud. You guys know what I'm talking about. All my controllers from all my systems past and present suffer from hand sweat crud (even the portables)! I hate cleaning that stuff.
