Maybe the PSP's better screen res will allow you to read your clues, etc. I was SOO excited when the DS version came out and it was unplayable.

Good on you! The Saturn version of the game was my first experience with the series, and I feel like I got lucky there. I still remember passing the manual for my Saturn copy of the game to Rand Miller (one of the creators, also portrays Atrus and Achenar, the blue brother, in Myst) and seeing his face light up as he said "Oh! This was one of the good ones!"

It seems like a lot of the various ports tended to be done by companies who had little interest in doing justice to the product, particularly the DS and PSP ports.

I think they should port a newer version (3 or 4) of Myst instead of the first one. Since the game is just a long interactive movie it shouldn't matter which version they port.

Myst 4 fit on two DVDs so they'd have to compress it a lot.

Well they did cut the size for Myst for iPhone in half with the latest update. Maybe they are learning a few tricks to manage size.
And additionally with the hard drive size of the iPhone growing, space concerns may become less of an issue.
I think with Riven though there is an issue of video boxes within video boxes or something to that nature. Which isn't possible on the iPhone architecture. You would think the PSP wouldn't have this issue though.

And yet...despite all of these ports and playing almost every single one of them, I've not beaten the damned game once.

Am I a failure? :(

I have fond memories of playing the original way back when it first came out with my dad. My memory is a little hazy but I think we beat it. Well I didn't really do anything but I think I watched him beat it and he was super excited about it. At the end you choose from a red or blue book and you decide whether to banish some guy forever or not. Or something like that...?

Years later I picked it up and attempted to play it myself and found it to be one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. I'm always excited when they announce a port and tell myself that this will be the time I play it, then it comes out and I play a whole 5 minutes of it before putting it down.

SEMI-SPOILER:

I love how big of a slap in the face it is once you finally beat it. Basically the entire game was getting that fireplace code and if you already know what it is you can beat the game in 5 minutes or less (depending on how long it takes you to run around the island and hit all the switches and enter that fireplace code which takes awhile)

I wonder if my original copy will even run on Vista, I remember last time I played it I had to install some ancient copy of quicktime because the new one wasn't compatible for some reason. (Both ran alongside each other fine though)

Myst for PSP was already release even before the DS version - just not in the US.

The iPhone version is excellent, BTW ... and cheap.

The original Myst is the only one I havn't beaten. Pretty much because I'm a little too young to have played it when it first came out and now it's pretty much like playing a powerpoint presentation. I need to get my hands on Real Myst or whatever the URU walk around version is.

Bah. After the excellent touch screen controls on the iPhone version, I feel like this will be a step backwards.. Not trolling, as I'm sure I'll get down voted.. Just making a point that The game was originally point & click with a mouse.. The Touch controls is the only obvious way to go about it to me.

I agree and take it a step farther.

This should not cost anymore then the iPhone version.

Everyone is saying the PSPGo is supposed to compete with iPhone games as a form of downloadable games. Then to be competitive the prices should be the same.

ya touch controls may SEEM to be the way to go for a game like myst, but playing the ds version was impossibly hard, as i had to tap every inch of the screen, instead in the pc psp etc. versions you have an on screen cursor which gives you hints on where you should click so in a way touch screens are a double edged sword, and not everything that uses a mouse can translate as easily to a touch screen format as you would think.... if anything myst would be perfect for the wii, you get the, well as some people would call it "accuracy, and ease of use" of the wiimote(which i strongly disagree with) and an on screen cursor, so it suits it nicely.

Part of me sees this a good news, because it could be additional revenue for Cyan Worlds to start making new games again. But it's also disheartening, because both the DS and PSP ports of the game are pretty terrible, and they turned off a lot of new players because of how badly powered they were.

The bonus Rime age serves as an excellent bridge from Myst to Riven. The problem is that Rime was originally built to be played in the realtime 3D remake of Myst, "realMYST", and these ports include the additional age by using stills taken of Rime. This results in a pretty shocking shift in art style and quality, since it's something thrown together by Hoplite instead of Cyan.

If you really want to play Myst, it shouldn't be terribly hard to find one of the various releases of the original game for PC, or you could also play the beautiful 3D remake "realMYST" on GameTap. If you've got an iPhone, that's probably your best option, since it's currently the highest quality assets that have been provided for the original game, and at $6 for a pretty large adventure game, it's hard to pass up.

Time will tell and I honestly think what they decide will be either insure my faith in sony for another 10 days or drive the last nail in the coffin.... if its more than $5-6 they are just out of touch with reality .... if its less then I will hold the candle of faith close to my heart until they bungle something else ....

Sorry if this eventually double posts ~,~

You realize Sony isn't the one publishing this and as such, has little influence over the price, right? The pricing will be determined by this publisher. And if a port of a game is too expensive for you, when this goes up on PSN, so does Unbound Saga. An all new brawler with a comic book theme for only $15.

I'm very disappointed in you [Playstation] joystiq-ers, why can't you recognise a good thing when it arrives (like this very article)? This should bring the light back to our humble PS3 (I know this is for PSP, but it's a start) that is sadly lacking traditional (ie graphic/point n click) adventure games.
