In a study of the top 100 iPhone games, PocketGamer.biz has discovered something that really isn't that surprising. The cheaper the game, the more likely it is to sell. Of the top 20 best selling titles, a full 15 cost only $0.99. In fact, 36 of the top 100 cost $0.99. Surprisingly, the next most popular price is $4.99, accounting for 20 of the top 100 titles. Still, the site notes that the top 10 games have an average price of $1.89, so it would seem that cheaper is better, at least in terms of sales volume.
If you want to get away with a higher price, it helps to have a game based on an established console IP. The study notes that such titles have an average price of $6.12. It also mentions that the exact method Apple uses to sort apps in the top 100 is shrouded in secrecy, meaning that it's difficult to draw hard conclusions from the data. The actual sales numbers aren't published by Apple either. Thus, it's impossible to tell if a game with a higher price point is earning more than a cheaper game with a higher sales volume.
There's a lot of data to look over in the study and it's definitely worth a look for those interested in the business side of the games industry.

Want to sell an iPhone game? Make a good game.
There, I fixed it for you.

But then if it costs $10, it might as well be crap. After spending $$ of apps that help iphone users remember where they parked their cars or to decide where to eat which is no small chump change, there isn't much left for games

The shovelware on the App Store makes the shovelware on the Wii look like AAA titles you see on the PC/PS3/360.

thats the first time i seen a $2 bill in a while, i wish they still made those

They actually do still make them, just in smaller volumes than other denominations. I had a friend who would cash his paycheck and request $2 bills just to mess with people. More than once he was told that they were counterfeit by fast food employees because they'd never heard of $2 bills. Gotta love America.

The $2 bill is currently being printed. They're just not all that heavily in circulation. I'm a valet and frequently receive $2 bill tips from a particular member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

yeah, one time, i went to a local best buy, and one of the bills i paid with was a $2. i wasn't sure if they were still in circulation, but it's legal tender, so i can still pay with it. they wouldn't accept it because they couldn't verify it. luckily, an older guy said that he collects them, so he gave me 2 $1 bills for it. and one of my aunts unloads all her $2 bills on me whenever she sees me.
summary: i have good memories about $2 bills. sorry for boring you, haha...

My wife gets them a lot working at a credit union. People always smile when we pay with them.

Cheaper products sell more!
Video at 11.
What would really be noteworthy is the actual revenue for the tradeoff. It's pretty freaking obvious that a game's going to sell better if it's cheaper, but the better question to ask is what price is going to net you more moolah.

it's true. i don't hesitate if i see a $.99 app that interests me and has good reviews. when peggle went to $.99, i bought it right then and there, even though i didn't even have my iphone yet. when knights onrush went on sale for $.99, i bought it immediately too. $.99 apps just look more appealing.

I don't think I've bought a single app that cost more than a dollar, though on a somewhat relevant subject, I save every $2 bill I get. I think I have 14 now.

As an iPhone developer, I can tell you it's a total crapshoot. You really have no idea what will catch on. Free versions get sooooo many downloads though. If we could get even a quarter of the people downloading the Lite version to spring for the full ver of our comic Chibi Chaingun, we'd be super happy.

Hear that MS? Cheaper games sell! Well no shit... instead of slowly raising every arcade game to 1200 or 1600 points, maybe try more at 400. I know I'd buy more games that I was iffy about at that price. No? Price increases = me buying less games . Maybe less than you think cause of spite.

Another app developer here. I worked on a game priced above the $4.99 price point, and it was in the top 10 apps for 2 weeks. At one point we discussed dropping the price to $0.99, but in order to make the same amount of money we were making at #68 on the top 100 list, we'd have to sell double the amount copies we were selling at #7.
Peggle gets mentioned a lot. They were a $4.99 app that also peaked initially around #6. When it dropped to $0.99 it shot to #1, but unless they were selling 5x as many copies per day than before the sale, it was actually loosing money. The *brilliant* move by Popcap, was that the sale only lasted 3 days and then the game went back to $4.99. Even with the original price, it managed to hang out in the top 10 for awhile longer, and *that's* where the money was earned. The $100,000 question is whether they made back the amount of money they lost with the sale or not.
As a final note, for the love of God, can everyone please stop buying The Moron Test? Seeing it as #1 for months makes me sad for humanity.
