Madmen completing every Mario game for charity
We love Mario. We mean, we're somewhat contractually obligated to, being huge nerds and all. Still, there's certain stages in the core Mario games that are simply excruciating to play -- we usually skip them during our nostalgic romps. That's why we can't help but admire the efforts of three men who are playing through every Super Mario title -- collecting every star, completing every level and Shining every Get! (Err -- getting every Shine.)
They're not doing this for fun, of course -- for the second year in a row, they're running through this "Mario Marathon," collecting donations for Child's Play. They've already been at it for two days -- but with the team yet to totally complete Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, then Super Mario Galaxy again (as that totally secret character), there's a lot of ballgame left to be played.

Child's Play is an awesome charity. I hope they raise a ton.
Wiizer (Michael Pachter MUST DIE.. Professionally) @ Jul 12th 2009 12:17PM
Looks like they left off the list all of the Mario Party games... Good idea, because Mario CHEATS in that one!
MystileArmor @ Jul 12th 2009 12:25PM
A second ago they were just talking about how Joystiq posted this. Fun to watch live feed going on.
Where is Mario's Missing, guys?
oOWallaceOo @ Jul 12th 2009 1:01PM
Shhhhhh Mystile, If we don't pay attention to it, it may go away
Fausk @ Jul 13th 2009 8:53AM
They're still going. They've raised over $24,000 dollars so far and still have to 100% Super Mario Sunshine now.
gfan102 @ Jul 12th 2009 12:13PM
Wow great thing to do. Gaming is the key.
Wiizer (Michael Pachter MUST DIE.. Professionally) @ Jul 12th 2009 12:16PM
They're going to need Dr. Mario for all the carpal tunnel!

MystileArmor @ Jul 12th 2009 12:26PM
???
What's a Nintendo XP, also what the fuck?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 12th 2009 12:30PM
"i beat cod5 and cod4 on veteran i beat mgs4 on solid boss dificulty"
and somewhere in that trip you apparently fried your brain in the process.
MystileArmor @ Jul 12th 2009 12:50PM
I have a hard time believing someone who can't find their "shift" button on their keyboard could beat any game, period.
sony boy @ Jul 12th 2009 1:02PM
you sound exactly like how mario would talk on the internet...if he was drunk.
Batzarro @ Jul 12th 2009 2:12PM
What game was insane? Ma Ma Mia? Is it a game based on the Abba song? Or on the movie based on the song? Because THAT is insane.
Blank-Mage @ Jul 12th 2009 2:59PM
God, I love the internet.
ArchiGamer [thephilosophyofgames.wordpress.com] @ Jul 12th 2009 3:57PM
Did I, umm, miss something?
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 12th 2009 4:45PM

Don't game on acid, son.
devilsei @ Jul 12th 2009 4:52PM
I voted Xim up simply because that post made me laugh.
lurock @ Jul 12th 2009 12:22PM
Outstanding event for an excellent cause. Everyone show support!

Not to take anything away from these crazy people, but The Speed Gamers will be starting their week long Final Fantasy run on July 17th (6pm CST) that includes final fantasys 1 thru 12 excluding 11, to benefit ACT Today an Autism care and treatment charity.
more details at: http://www.thespeedgamers.com/
But what about the super mario world star path, that too?
chispito @ Jul 12th 2009 1:03PM
Ugh, I can't even begin to fathom how much of an un-fun chore that would be.
So. Many. Random. Encounters.
Mr Khan @ Jul 12th 2009 12:45PM
Have fun with the Blue Coins...
Alexisonfire @ Jul 12th 2009 2:45PM
If you are refering to Galaxy's blue coins, I very much doubt they will be having much trouble with it. I assume they will be doing Galaxy last and it is definitely the easiest game of the bunch.
Alexisonfire @ Jul 12th 2009 2:48PM
Wait, no. Those were purple coins in Galaxy. The blue coins were in Sunshine...
Yes, good luck with those blue coins.
Aivskar @ Jul 12th 2009 12:45PM
Pff, this isn't _every_ Mario game..
chispito @ Jul 12th 2009 1:07PM
It appears to be every classic SMB home console platformer. I still think this is cool.
Aivskar @ Jul 12th 2009 1:38PM
Ye, it is. :)
Batzarro @ Jul 12th 2009 2:15PM
If they hunt down a virtual boy and Super Mario Clash, they'll burn off their retinas and be unable to complete. Plus there are like 9 Mario Party games and this is charity work: not a suicide pact.
Blank-Mage @ Jul 12th 2009 3:01PM
Preposterous.
mouse_clicker @ Jul 12th 2009 12:46PM
Whoopty doo! I mean, it's good they're doing this for charity, and have been raising a lot of money, but this is by no means an impressive feat. I did the same thing shortly before Super Mario Galaxy came out (and then including Galaxy once it did). I played every single level, got every single star/shine. Except I played ALL of the Mario games, including the Japanese Super Mario Brothers 2 (far and away the hardest game in the series), Super Mario Land 1 and 2, and New Super Mario Bros. When Twilight Princess came out I marathoned all the Zelda games, 100% completion, and when Metroid Prime 3 came out I marathoned all the Metroid games, 100% completion.
Catdogburger @ Jul 12th 2009 12:51PM
Whoopty Doo! It isn't feat we know that...the news is that it's for charity. Lighten Up a little!
mouse_clicker @ Jul 12th 2009 1:00PM
Yeah, I know, overreacted a bit, but seriously, this is like guys washing windows for charity. And not even your windows, their OWN windows. They could have marathoned a more difficult series, like the Ghosts 'n' Goblins series. Or done speed runs on all the Metroid games. But it's for a good cause.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 12th 2009 1:01PM
So we're bragging how little of a life we have now? Well I can't compete with that, so you take the early lead.
placebo @ Jul 12th 2009 1:08PM
You're free to go ahead and raise money for Child's Play by Marathon the Zelda games 100%. Go ahead, do it.
Maybe you'd rather 100% Metroid Marathon instead?
Or go on and marathon a more difficult series, like the Ghosts 'n' Goblins series. Or done speed runs on all the Metroid games.
mouse_clicker @ Jul 12th 2009 1:10PM
Haha, yeah you can buddy, you're the 3rd reply to a post by a guy who was being a dick and has no life. When you're nested that deeply in a comments section on a news post about Mario marathoning for charity, on a video game blog, then you're not exactly in a position to be making yourself look all high and mighty.
mouse_clicker @ Jul 12th 2009 1:17PM
Hey, OK, I supposed I deserve the abuse, but seriously, I was just talking about these guys and analyzing their methods.
Mr Khan @ Jul 12th 2009 2:28PM
his e-penis is larger than our e-penises
ximena79 @ Jul 12th 2009 12:48PM
excuse bad english gameboy xp dont....... freak out also no my brain isnt fried have u ever played super mario land 2 no so dont tell me its easy
MystileArmor @ Jul 12th 2009 12:51PM
reply button?
I also find it funny you picked Super Marioland 2, one of the easier Mario games.
Catdogburger @ Jul 12th 2009 12:52PM
"gameboy xp don't"
here we go again...
mouse_clicker @ Jul 12th 2009 1:00PM
Actually, yeah, Super Mario Land 2 was on the easier side of most Mario games, although the final castle where you find Wario was pretty challenging. Super Mario Land 1 was much more difficult, in my opinion. Super Mario Sunshine was fairly easy if you just wanted to cruise by and get the obvious Shines, but if you wanted all of them, especially the blue coin shines, good god that could get frustrating. And then Lost Levels, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2, that game is just a hardcore dick. What with the poison mushrooms, warp zones that send you BACK to earlier worlds, invisible blocks, jumps that must be assisted by the wind, and the numerous leaps of faith you had to make with no idea where, or on what, you would land. And then the final castle, having to fight Bowser twice in a row, ugh.
Markez @ Jul 12th 2009 2:07PM
Wart, not Wario.
Syril Ram @ Jul 12th 2009 2:15PM
No, it was Wario that you fought in Super Mario Land 2. You're thinking of Super Mario Bros 2 or Super Mario USA.
Mr Khan @ Jul 12th 2009 2:29PM
Super Mario Land 2 was made easier by the sheer fact you could save. Plus it was just laid out more similarly to Super Mario 3, while Land 1 was closer to the original SMB
juan248 @ Jul 12th 2009 12:58PM
people calm down, so she made a mistake its not her fault we all have our days
ximena79 @ Jul 12th 2009 1:01PM
I dare all of you to go to a different country and try speaking spanish or russian. so we'll see how much they make fun of you
MystileArmor @ Jul 12th 2009 1:15PM
I speak English, whilst I've only lived in the USA for around 5 years now. I'm fluent in Dutch (my native tongue) and English. I understand most of French and German and I'm learning a bit of Spanish.
If you want something bad enough, you can do it.
Blank-Mage @ Jul 12th 2009 3:06PM
I speak a little Japanese, demo Nippon no watashiwa jai nai.
Just saying.
...I live a sad life.
Nozzinja @ Jul 12th 2009 1:03PM
Im so glad they didnt include the hacked versions of mario, some of those levels are insane.
for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfCaGaqcr3k
props to the guy, it was his third attempt. I probably would have taken all day LOL
todzilla @ Jul 12th 2009 1:04PM
who in the world would want to sit through super mario sunshine. that game was absolutely terrible. i did find a use for it though as it is great frisbee practice for my dog
