Games are making more money than all other electronics in Japan
It's a bit surprising to hear positive news regarding Japan's game industry -- in light of the general negative atmosphere that surrounds it. While some reports focus on the perpetual shrinking of the Japanese market, other reports, such as the latest from analysts Eurotechnology Japan KK, point out that the industry is doing much better than other electronic goods in this current economic climate.
Pitting the combined net annual income of the top nine gaming companies against the top 19 electronics companies, Eurotech Japan has found out that games have provided a more stable stream of revenue. Looking at the chart above, it would appear the global recession hasn't affected gaming as it has other electronics industries (giving more credence to the recession proof theory). Although, the chart also seems to indicate, in contrary to previous reports, that Japan's game industry isn't in decline but is rather in stagnation. Does that then mean if there was no recession, we'd be seeing healthier growth? Or does being "recession proof" also work in reverse?

nothing is recession proof. not even michael patcher!!!
even though the Entertainment sector does rather well compared to other markets during recessions, it doesn't mean that they're recession proof. I'm sure if we weren't in a recession console sales would be a lot higher than they are now

Nice to at least see some companies not affected by the recession.

Odd, considering that the scene has been steadily shrinking, even with handhelds factored in.
Gamer drift in full force over there.

I'm sorry but games aren't electronics, they are media. What is the purpose of this comparison? Perhaps if you were referring to the hardware side of the video game market this article would not be entirely moronic. People don’t run out and rebuy TV’s, computers, etc more than once a year at best.
The entertainment industry and the pawn shop industry are two of the few that are unaffected by a recession and even boom during the down slope of the economic cycle. Any jackass on the street knows this.

Seems to be splitting hairs here, but the video gaming industry straddles both electronics and media, and the dispute between the two definitions leads to some of the greater debates in gaming philosophy (since Sony treats it very much like another electronics game, while Microsoft incorporates both ends, and Nintendo sees it strictly as a software game)

That's what anyone would expect from a poor economy.

Pretty much everyone under 45 plays videogames in Japan--both men and women. Of course it's going to have a more consistent revenue stream.
And despite all things being much more expensive in Japan than in North America, Electronics (such as TVs. Heck, electric kettles cost an avg of $50 USD here in Japan!) cost even more than they really should. I don't think the Japanese are drifting into gaming and media as much as they are just not buying the latest electronic toys like they used to.

If you look at the original report, there's a further breakdown on the game companys' revenue.
It seems that the growth was solely produced by the red bar, which I assume represents the money-printing Nintendo. The rest of the industry wasn't doing so good, and there was even one company losing badly (I think it's Sega).
