Oh Globe and Mail, you never cease to amuse with your quick to anger, gut reactions that you call news.

The thing about Ottawa is that it's still 1976 there. No one wants to program games on reel-to-reel tapes or punchcards anymore sorry.

Freaparn, is 1976 the last time you visited Ottawa? Leaving your house more often is good for you :-P

I live in the suburbs north of Toronto and to hear someone whine from TO is nothing new.

If its not the government whining, its the people, otherwise its the business', then it could be the special interest groups.

Toronto stinks! (garbage staff are on strike) : P

"Checks" is American spelling, like "color", "honor", "aluminum", "analog", and the pronunciation of the letter "zee".

The best part about this whole tiff over the new studio, is that if Ontario had put that 265 million into something like say...an Auto plant, or some kind of new Manufacturing plant everyone would be singing the Governments praises and saying "hallelujah! the economy is saved!" but since its Ubisoft and not GM thats getting the cash its a big problem.

I second the motion - Toronto is a real North American media production hub, for movies, television, magazines, etc. We also have some key universities and colleges that produce some prime talent that usually ends up moving elsewhere.

I'm glad we finally have a big gaming company coming here. I have no problem with tax credits - its not a handout, its no different (and more beneficial I would argue) than most cities subsidizing stupid sports teams or auto plants.

I'm actually surprised that it hasn't happened before. I mean come on, Montreal? Its had a net decline in jobs for years because of the stupid french government.

Want to hear a funny story? I work for a big telecomm, and we have to localize one of our internal apps because we have users in Quebec (Montreal, and they all speak English of course). Well, while testing, our French users are confused, because they don't understand the translated telecomm terms, like VPN (whatever it is in French). They just know the English, yet ironically if we don't translate to the French (which the French users don't understand), we risk being dinged by the government for non-compliance! F@#@C@#s!

Weird how you twisted your comment just to bash on Montreal.

So true though... I'm French Canadian, I work for the government in Ottawa, and half the stuff we have to put up on the Web is incomprehensible because most French Canadians don't speak "proper" French anyway, and they usually end up using the English versions of our apps and docs. Sad.

I apologize. I didn't mean to bash Montreal, but I definitely aim to bash stupid Quebec language laws.

I really meant to say that I would have thought that Toronto would have made more sense as a video game development hub than Montreal. I don't understand what would have made Montreal more attractive, except that its population is primarily bilingual, and UbiSoft is a French company.

I guess it was just a matter of critical mass and organic growth. Props to Montreal for getting and keeping them though.

Please, Please, PLEASE DO NOT call us Torontonians. I Fucking hate that term! Ever Since Mayor Miller started spewing that word I get sickened by it! It makes residents of Toronto sound like we suffer from a new Mental illness or disability (possibly caused by the Fucking Garbage Strike). I'm close to throwing some trashbags at the picketers.

whaaa? Torontonians? It's a term that has existed a lot longer then Mayor Miller. It's the adjective noun version of the name Toronto. And to hate a word simply because you hate a politician who uttered it (even though it predates the politician by many a year) is silly. That's like me hating the phrase "You betcha" because Sarah Palin said it and not because it's an asanine response to an intelligent question.

Everyone's talking 'bout Ubisoft opening a studio in Toronto, but I haven't seen ANY gaming site talk about EA opening a studio here in Kitchener (45 minutes south of Toronto).

oooh! Incentive to move back to Cambridge. What's the scale of the shop they are opening up? It makes sense given that U of W is right there and has one of the highest regarded Computer courses in the world.

I don't like the tone of voice used. It sounds like he doesn't think that the video game industry is a serious business. Calling Ubisoft the 'cool kid' is like saying that they are ignorant business (quite ironic) that would fail in the long term.
