Rage heading to QuakeCon, calm soon to follow?

id Software today announced that the upcoming rageahol-fueled FPS, Rage, will be heading to the company's yearly soirée, QuakeCon. The email we got from id billed the event as "the first look at the next revolution in FPS from id Software," a game we've been anxious to get our hands on since it was announced all the way back in 2007.

Wait, 2007?! And the game (er, "prototype") looked pretty good back then! With QuakeCon 2009 just four short weeks away -- and Gearbox Software showing off its strikingly similar-to-Rage shooter, Borderlands, this week to the press -- we're becoming mighty interested in who is going to win the desert death race ... of our hearts. In the meantime, we'll be entertaining ourselves with the strange new website/ARG/slow web thing that just launched around the game, After the Impact. Needless to say, we hope you'll be greatly impacted by your visit.

Is it just me or did Rage look outdated when they announced it 2 years ago? It seems like the only things iD has done in the last decade that really mattered is re-releasing old games. Sad.

I agree with the whole "re-releasing" bit (what was the last technologically innovative thing id did? Quake 2?).

I disagree with the outdated bit - it looks pretty good to me. I'm looking forward to see what work has been done on it lately.

the last major thing id has done has to be the Doom3 engine.

that was the last game that looked far better than anything when it came out.

but i guess most high end game engines have reached a point in which the differences between each are hardly noticeable

BTW wtf was up with doom3 not having different death animations for the creatures? the whole shoot-them-until-they-turn-into-red-fairydust thing got old really quick...

If i shoot a fucken flying pumpkin i wanna see it pop into nasty green flesh, or deflate like a ballon and have it hit the wall at high speed and blow up.

I wouldn't say it looked dated two years ago but it probably will by the time it comes out. Id seem to be extremely slow at developing games these days. Doom 3 took ages and was rubbish, QuakeLive has been in development for over two years and is still full of bugs even though it's just a re-release of Quake 3 and Rage seems to be taking an eternity as well.

I can't say I care that much about what Id do these days and won't be expecting much from Rage when it does finally come out.
