Battlefield Heroes registers over 1 million players
The growth of Battlefield Heroes has been slow and steady -- a natural side-effect of EA and DICE's slow trickle release of beta codes for the free-to-play shooter. However, on June 25, Heroes' floodgates were flung wide open, letting every would-be cartoon soldier access to the title. Now, about 19 days since that fateful event, EA has revealed some impressive statistics: Over one million players have registered for the online battle.
That's quite a few digital soldiers, but we're curious to know how many of those decided to purchase fancy hats for their militaristic avatars, and whether EA is turning a profit thanks to the sale of said chapeaus. We've emailed EA to try and find out.

Great! Now where's the mac version?
yokel @ Jul 14th 2009 7:50PM
nobody cares about mac.. just kidding...
Nerdy Desi @ Jul 14th 2009 7:52PM
I'm wondering if since modern Macs can now easily run Windows and other X86/X64 operating systems, that developers will even bother to port a Mac version? Its a waste of extra precious resources when a Mac can easily run a PC game.
It would be cool if in the future, there could be one copy of a game that runs on a console and PC as well. : )

Well to an extent, this already exists. Blizzard, for example, code all their games such that the disk you buy will install on both mac and pc. Hell, the mac version of WoW even has extra features such as built in video capture.
Point is it can be done. It has been done. Most just choose not to atm.
Brazen @ Jul 15th 2009 8:29AM
You know what? I kinda failed rather badly there. I didn't even read my own quote. I think it's cause you started by talking about macs that I assumed the quote was about macs and pcs. My bad!
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:41PM
I could be a licensing thing. If you have to play Jobs to publish games on his shiny tat, I can see why many wouldn't bother.
Triscuit @ Jul 15th 2009 5:19PM
I'm very surprised by the responses so far. No one has opened up a can of Mac hate. Bravo.
N3M3515 @ Jul 27th 2009 10:45AM
yea macs can run games now anyways... by running windows. Macs are awesome now.
Jonathan @ Jul 14th 2009 7:36PM
i paid for a monkey for my shoulder :p
Mark @ Jul 14th 2009 11:23PM
I've played it. I think its a pretty weak game if you've played previous Battlefield games.
Style wise, Team Fortress 2 blows it away
Veko @ Jul 14th 2009 7:55PM
I enjoy this besides the fact that it breaks my Vista computer's recognition of my internet connection at the end of each match. I've never had this happen before, and I play quite a few online games.
Doc Doom @ Jul 14th 2009 7:56PM
It's fun, but it's not TF2 fun. Regardless, I've enjoyed it.
David @ Jul 14th 2009 8:09PM
I played this for 20 minutes. And I never came back.
sokrateas @ Jul 14th 2009 8:16PM
Same here. God awful game.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 14th 2009 9:35PM
Well you get what you pay for.
DarkHelmet @ Jul 16th 2009 6:52PM
yeah, its boring, slow, bad controls, choppy. TF2 is better, even quakelive.com is much better then this waste of time, bandwidth and hdd space.
Mark @ Jul 15th 2009 8:59AM
Same here. It's terrible
commonperson @ Jul 15th 2009 11:35AM
Ditto, I got in to the beta, played on and off until the pretty much final release coming back once every couple of weeks and haven't touched it since they finalized the build. Just nothing much to it. So saying 1 million people register is one thing, but the actual number that's important is how many KEEP playing the game. I lost count at how many free MMOs I've registered for and not played more then a few days.
jumpshot @ Jul 15th 2009 12:26PM
But what if you buy 60$ worth of stuff? Will the game be better then if you paid more for it? :P
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:32PM
Wow, thanks for your in-depth review of a whole 20 minutes worth of play. Of course, you being a master of all games, would have managed to fully comprehend a games pros and cons in that time.
Most others would get their dumb newbie arses kicked, raged quit and pounded their sweaty ham fists into the keyboard in fury, to complain how much a game sucks on a gaming blog.
Look At This Suit @ Jul 14th 2009 8:13PM
I only registered an account on this so I could get the F2000 in Bad Company. You don't even need to play, just register and make a character.
M @ Jul 14th 2009 8:19PM
Thank You for the PC tag. You guys rock!
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 14th 2009 8:27PM
I played it, I even bought an SS officer for Herman Von Klempt but then I realized how bad the game was. Cartoon or not, it shouldnt take 5 tank shells to kill a guy, and they dont need to be direct hits either. Come to think of it, almost every battlefield seems to have that problem.
ToadStoolPorridge @ Jul 14th 2009 8:40PM
I couldn't agree more. I have a mac, but I got a chance to try this out at my bud's house. I know I'm not a FPS expert and I can't get headshots every single time, but it was taking way too long to kill someone. I guess it makes it harder for spawn kills and such, but it's still rather obnoxious. The only way I could cope with the fact was that I had to say it took other players longer to kill me as well.
Mark @ Jul 15th 2009 8:59AM
That issue is to keep game balance. Otherwise, everybody with a tank would wipeout all the standalone players.
However, the overall game does feel crappy.
jam @ Jul 14th 2009 8:51PM
i signed up for the game when it was posted on here that it was open and i can tell u that i haven't bothered buying one thing. iv just rented out the stuff available.
Flo @ Jul 14th 2009 9:06PM
That picture reminds me of tf2
ChanceC (XBL: NoPantsChance) @ Jul 15th 2009 2:04PM
I can see TF2, though it reminded me more of Advance Wars.
Matthew (GamerzTech.com) @ Jul 14th 2009 9:10PM
Is this game any good?
That Ninja @ Jul 14th 2009 9:25PM
Game is fun until you figure out how unbalanced it is.
LegendaryRedass @ Jul 14th 2009 9:39PM
Holy shit, it's attack of the Pereiras
mezzanine @ Jul 14th 2009 10:00PM
Game is fun, but the balance is stupid as hell. And I hate the whole Battlefunds thing, I don't even think you get to keep what you pay for, do you?
JangoGod @ Jul 14th 2009 10:35PM
At first it was. Very stupid, but they changed it :)
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:27PM
You can keep stuff now but it's still over priced tho. It's EA, so no fucking surprise there.
Balance is WAY off at low levels, but evens out pretty fast. Trouble is that you get a load of teenage retards all playing commando at first, then they all wonder why the lame tatics they used before no longer work on the other classes. then they call them hackers and rage quit.
They then make idiotic posts on video games blogs. :D
Breakerchase @ Jul 14th 2009 10:29PM
The closed beta back in May 2008 was awesome back then. Battlefunds really killed the game for me.
Hakobus @ Jul 15th 2009 3:34AM
Well, I've registered as a player for BH, but the problem is that they require you to use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox to be able to play (which is a fairly retarded thing to do). I mean, the game doesn't run inside the browser, so why on earth do I need a specific browser to play?
I don't want to install additional software that I never use (Firefox) and I don't want to install any add-on's to IE, since I wouldn't use that browser for anything else.
It would be nice if EA showed some love for Chrome, so I could actually get to play the game instead of just being one of the million who've registered.
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:21PM
I think it's not to scare the idiots with a downloadable .exe installer which everything says could be dangerous or have viruses in.
But yeah, it's annoying.
-=A.X=- | 3lite @ Jul 15th 2009 10:43AM
I was pretty disappointed with this game, but I suppose I cant complain for free. Quake Live is the best free game atm imo.
Best,
3lite
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:06PM
No, just... no. Quake Live is Quake 3 for better or worse. Mostly worse. It is, and always will be, a race to the cool weapons and any concept of strategy or skill is blasted into the sun. This was fine in 1999 when the whole idea of playing online was still new, but today, ten years later, it's a joke.

woah, what happened there?
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 2:54PM
Been playing for a few weeks now. It's pretty horrid when you first play, as you have no abilities other then "got shot in the face." It takes a few hours to get the levels you need to defend yourself, but I find it odd they did this, as it's surely a turn off for any new players . On the flip side, it weeds out all the screeching 13-year-olds with ADD.
-=A.X=- | 3lite @ Jul 15th 2009 3:13PM
I am a CA player so there is none of that, but if you honestly believe there is no skill or strategy in this game then I have no idea what to say to you. Watch this video I suppose. http://www.quakeunity.com/file=2718 it is very much so one of the highest skilled games of all time.
As far as the double goes...idk man, happens to me sometimes 2. lol
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:18PM
Okay, "jump around and spam like a 'tard" is a strategy if you want to be technical.
-=A.X=- | 3lite @ Jul 15th 2009 3:25PM
lol man, think what you want, but quake 3 arena / quake live has the largest skill gap between the worst and best players. That pretty much just goes for the arena genre in general. Movement, Aim, Map Control, Anticipation points, timing, speed and precision are just unmatched, which is why the genre is so hard to get into. People get discouraged to quick and leave because they cant automatically be good at the game like so many others.
Hopefully Quake Lives tier system will help with that...though it needs quite a bit of work atm.
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:36PM
That's becuase the people that aren't obsessed with the game or just plain stupid, play games that aren't a decade old.
-=A.X=- | 3lite @ Jul 15th 2009 3:37PM
Ha, nice rebuttal.
Poisoned Al @ Jul 15th 2009 3:43PM
:D Seriosuly tho. I never got into Quake 3. I love Quake 2, but I found arena annoyingly random.
-=A.X=- | 3lite @ Jul 15th 2009 3:54PM
Yea its unfortunately not for everyone. Joystiq didnt post my other comment for some reason, but thats about the jist of it. g2g, physical therapy time.
