Halo Wars getting four new maps, four new achievements
Are your miniscule, impressionable Spartans developing powerful cases of wanderlust? Are they growing antsy and restless -- sure signs of boredom with their tired stomping (and shooting) grounds? You'll be able to whisk them off to new, yet-to-be-bloodstained areas soon enough -- on July 21, Microsoft is dropping four new maps and four new achievements for Halo Wars.
The "Historic Battles" map pack (which will cost 800
) includes two 1v1 maps, a 2v2 map, a 3v3 map and four new achievements which tack 100 extra gamerpoints to the strategy title. We've got descriptions of each map and 'cheevo listed after the break for all you cautious consumers.

We've got descriptions of each map and 'cheevo listed after the break for all you cautious consumers.- Barrens (1v1 Map): Difficult terrain channels units into killing zones. The side that controls the Forerunner artifacts will have the advantage.
- Blood River (1v1 Map): Secure base locations on nearby cliffs overlook this naturally red-tinged river. The soldiers that fought over its two narrow crossings gave the river its name, which has since taken on a greater meaning.
- Glacial Ravine (3v3 Map): A snow-topped mountain range forms a natural barrier that cuts this region in half. Control of the two energy walls at the narrow central pass often determines the outcome of the battle, though clever use of the Sentinel Factories may play a role as well.
- Memorial Basin (2v2 Map): The high ground in the middle offers good cover for infantry, while the generally open terrain transforms organized battle plans into bloodbaths.
- Tour Coming Through: Hot drop 50 squads to your Covenant Leader in a single game on Memorial Basin (30 points)
- Never Leave a Man Behind: Finish a game with 5000 net resources contributed to your teammates on Barrens (15 points)
- Drain Cleaner: Kill 20 enemy squads with a continuous Covenant Leader Power on Memorial Basin (30 points)
- Killjoy: Disrupt 5 active Leader Powers in a single game on Blood River (25 points)

Good day, gentleman.

I swear I'll get around to finishing it one of these days...

"Never Leave a Man Behind: Finish a game with 5000 net resources contributed to your teammates on Barrens (15 points)"
How is this achievement supposed to happen when Barrens is listed as a 1v1 map?
GhostofGrendel @ Jul 14th 2009 11:48AM
bad timing. I haven't been able to play halo wars for weeks. my 360 got the RRoD. doesn't fall under warranty because it is a launch system. I thought the RRoD being so common was a myth since my brother and I both had launch systems with no problems. $99 to fix it. :-(. I want these maps though so I guess it's time to get it fixed. Still cheaper than buying a new one though so I can't be too angry.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 14th 2009 1:17PM
That sucks, it had to happen sometime though. I really think it's funny that all the people that still have launch 360's think it's something to brag about...all it really means is when it fails you're not going to be under warranty. My dad's launch 360 went out over the weekend while playing a very demaning/intensive game of Ticket to Ride.
GhostofGrendel @ Jul 14th 2009 3:29PM
@ CTC
Yeah, I was one of the proud. It also made me think that the RRoD wasn't nearly as bad as everyone made it out to be. Guess I was wrong.
mmhlaw222 @ Jul 14th 2009 11:55AM
why would they make 2 1v1 maps, nobody plays or likes 1v1
RedSonRising @ Jul 14th 2009 7:05PM
i play 1v1 almost exclusively. i cant stand 2v2 matches and 3v3 is unbearable without 2 solid teammates.
jynxycat @ Jul 14th 2009 12:05PM
$10 for four maps ?
DLC is suck a joke.
These companies act as if making RTS MP maps is a challenging task.
jynxycat @ Jul 14th 2009 12:05PM
erm. such a joke.
Brian @ Jul 14th 2009 12:48PM
Have you got a large version of your display pic?
bluenocturnex @ Jul 14th 2009 12:07PM
who plays this game anyway, SC2 is gonna take my money.
eNrique @ Jul 14th 2009 1:32PM
SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
You can say things like that in a rrod-haloz fans ifested site.
Jerk Face @ Jul 14th 2009 12:17PM
Anyone play this? I am a dude who recently finds himself loving Teh Haloz, and the story and universe therein. I never had an original Xbox, so I recently went back and played all three of them; and was quite surprised that Halo, as a series, isn't shitty. Like, at all. This is a pleasant surprise to me.
I've never been much of an RTS guy, however. Thoughts?
WREturns @ Jul 14th 2009 12:48PM
I love it. It's awesome when you get a 3v3 game and you have these huge armies ripping into each other. It's pretty balanced, too. I don't love the FPS Halo games but I think Halo Wars is the bomb ass shit.
umm....hello??? @ Jul 14th 2009 1:23PM
it's a nice soft intro to RTS's, which I'm not into really but like yourself, I love the storyline. haven't played it in awhile (and haven't beaten it yet), but it's easier to play co-op than single player (especially if it's your first RTS). If you enjoy the Halo storyline you'll enjoy the game.
waiting for my brother to pick it up so I can complete it on Legendary difficulty. there's a few guys on my friends list who play occasionally and give me helpful tips on the multiplayer. if you get stuck in the single player campaign there's always gamefaqs.com to get you through to the next part.
if you want ppl to play multiplayer with or co-op, it's easier and faster to post on the msg boards for halowars than trying to do a search for a game from the game menu.
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 14th 2009 1:27PM
I like it. I haven't played it in a while, but I do like it. It's definitely worth getting if your interested in the Halo lore at all. And it's certainly RTS-newb friendly.
WREturns @ Jul 14th 2009 1:34PM
My gamertag is HaloKissesBoys so anyone that wants to play should add me as a friend.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 14th 2009 3:51PM
If you are a Big Halo fan and I mean Huge chances are that you already play it,if you just like the series well there is nothing to see here because the story is irrelevant to the Halo Universe.
Is about some Marines that try to stop the Covenant from using Forerunner Super Wepoanz. At the end both factions lose, the covenant because they don't get crap out of the whole thing and the humans because they wasted a lot of resources destroying the super weapons instead of using them.
The CGI is very Impresive but what stops you from watching the cutscenes on HD on youtube for free? honestly I don't know.
The game itself is a very simple RTS with almost no strategy involved unless you play on Legendary difficulty (Sort of)but the campaign is so repetitive I don't know why would you play it twice.
Gamer4Life @ Jul 14th 2009 12:40PM
I'm still waiting for a covenant campaign here Robot Entertainment
Kinsey @ Jul 14th 2009 12:46PM
I think I got to the fourth mission and failed and havent played it since :(
baby sea tuna @ Jul 14th 2009 1:09PM
That's about where I left off too. I think I got caught up in RE5 around that time anyway and that's what I put all of my March/April hours into.
eNrique @ Jul 14th 2009 1:34PM
Ohhhhhhhhh man...
I love Canada.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 14th 2009 3:37PM
You aren't missing much,I finish the game on normal and the story is very weak and the campaign so repetitive that I didn't even wanted to play it ever again,is a weak game overrall.
This game had a lot of potential but it just feels like a mediocre vanilla RTS game with a Halo wallpaper over it, they didn't even included the flood as playable race.I expected more from Ensemble I mean they created Age of Empires 2 but after that it seems they just dropped the ball.
I had more fun with Empire Earth than with AoE3 (Using Nuclear weapons on cavemen was really fun)
Snowblind @ Jul 14th 2009 1:16PM
I still play the game, I think it's great, but I'm not interested in buying just a few maps. Especially for such an unreasonable amount. Call me when they do a big proper expansion..
umm....hello??? @ Jul 14th 2009 1:27PM
yeah, I'll wait for the DLC to go on sale....still have yet to beat the game anyways...
arrrgh @ Jul 14th 2009 2:03PM
im still clinging to the hope that they will make the flood playable somehow :(
Hyperion45 @ Jul 14th 2009 4:58PM
Please observe the following :
"Barrens (1v1 Map): Difficult terrain channels units into killing zones. The side that controls the Forerunner artifacts will have the advantage"
"Never Leave a Man Behind: Finish a game with 5000 net resources contributed to your teammates on Barrens (15 points)"
Anyone find this doesn't make sense? Barrens is a 1v1 map. How do you contribute resources to your teammates if you don't have any goddamn teammates?
carg0 @ Jul 14th 2009 10:38PM
good question.
perhaps by "teammates" they mean your [troops/tanks/aircrafts] and by "5000 net resources contributed to" they mean [5000 net resources invested into upgrading them]??
or perhaps the map itself has a third faction (rebels for example) that can be "hired" and invested into??
carg0 @ Jul 15th 2009 3:22AM
it was a typo. it should've read:
Never Leave a Man Behind (15g): Finish with 5000 net resources tributed to your teammates on *Memorial Basin* except in Deathmatch.

*this* is what should've been the first DLC pack. not f*ing game modes that clearly had no excuse for not already being on the disk. it still boils my blood that MS even had the nerve to pull a stunt like that but then i kick myself for being so naïve.
as much as i like the games themselves, im getting sick and tired of watching MS continue to exploit the fanbase at every possible turn through overpriced DLC.
not the sole reason, of course, but im glad Bungie walked away as they obviously foresaw all of this, realized it was beyond their control and decided to pack up. damn shame Ensemble didn't have the resources to do the same.
AnnoyingPoster @ Jul 15th 2009 12:40AM
cheevo and any other shortened or cutesy form of Achievement is the gayest shit i have ever heard and should be banned from any man's varnacular, punnishable by punch to the face.
please, dont ever put up a post with that crap again
