Left 4 (Shaun of the) Dead mod in the works

Grab a Cornetto in celebration of this truly heroic, and overdue, mod effort: a group of amateur designers is working on Left 4 Winchester for PC, a Left 4 Dead campaign based on the classic zombie comedy (or zomedy, if you will) Shaun of the Dead. Each of the game's five chapters will take place in one of the movie's locations, including the Winchester Tavern, where the movie's zombie-filled final showdown happened.

Unfortunately, according to the website, one of the mappers is concerned with the legal issues of basing the mod on a movie, and this hesitation may result in the project's loss of some of its work. We'll translate: don't expect this to be available immediately.

I don't think so. If it were a game, yeah, probably, or a newer movie, definitely. Shaun's been out for some time, no game's been made, and the directors seem like good guys.

Very cool idea. If they could skin the survivors with likenesses of the Shaun of the Dead characters, all the better.

If they're not doing it for profit, they might be able to strike a deal with the makers of the movie.

You can't make mods for profit, unless Valve picks it up ala Team Fortress 2.

you can make mods for profit.. u just have to get all the licensing out of the way.. I've seen source mods go full retail before.

From what I know (and I might be wrong), the original owner of whatever your modding has to give approval if you want to make money out of it.

Otherwise I could mod Left 4 Dead, add a bunch of different maps/skins and sell it.

Mods go Full Retail. Damnation, Killing Floor to name a few. Basically, they have to buy the license to the software they are modding. Usually after the mod has gotten to a certain point with some interest, either the modders or outside investors pay to make it go full retail.

Yep, that's true, MystileArmor. The SDK end user license agreement says that you may not make a profit off of your mods using the engine. The mods that went retail had to obtain a Source license from Valve.

Is this really news? This smells of a guy who wants to make a mod but doesn't actually want to do any work (or, to be fair, maybe he sucks at it) so he hires other people to do it for him, so of course if they leave the entire mod falls apart, no surprise there.
