Sony's European head of developer relations, Zeno Colaço, has explained the company's strategy for courting companies to make products for its digital distribution-focused PSP line (more specifically, the new, expensive PSP Go). The executive tells Develop that the new development pipeline involves getting rid of concept approval, shortening quality assurance process, slashing the SDK price (and implementing cheaper development kits), and pushing for a low price point for games.
Colaço boasts that over 50 studios are already making the new generation of PSP titles. He mentions Subatomic Studios is already working on a PSP version of Fieldrunners, its tower-defense iPhone hit. Basically, Sony wants to bring App Store-esque titles to the PSP. We expect about four or five fart-based titles by holiday '09.

this statement worries me. it sounds like the PSP may become the new shovelware dumpster. i really hope i'm wrong.

Sony's really trying to kill the playstation brand, first overpriced, over hyped, under preforming hardware, now they want their hand held to be the next "great" shovelware fest.

I'll be happy just to have more games available, even if only 1 out of 10 is somethign I really want that would still be a step up.

The whole PSP line reeks of desperation at this point. Sony should have gone whole-hog with the PSP Go and turned it into a full-blown PSP2 instead of this half-ass approach. Yes, they DO need more software, but not less quality control.
If the PSP was a compelling platform with a large install base, they wouldn't need to try and short-track developers on board, as developers would be tripping over themselves to reach the target audience.

I disagree JayVe, screwing over everyone who bought a PSP up until now would be a dumb move. The problem with the system isn't the controls or the technology,it's lack of good games.

Wrong again, serp. It's pretty widely accepted that the DS has an almost unrivaled library of games. Have you ever owned one?

I think I only half agree with you. I agree with your statements about how Sony did a smart move by just making an upgrade rather than the next-gen device and the hardware and technology not being the problem with the PSP.
BUT the PSP does have some fantastic games and quite a few that are much more mature and adult compared to (most, not all) DS games. However, the CONSISTENCY of good games is the real issue. There are a lot of good games for the PSP, but they only come around once a year (either Spring or Winter) and for the rest of the year there is a real drought.
So I think Sony is doing a very smart thing by trying to streamline and make the approval process more appealing to developers. Because everyone knows the PSP can have great games, but the real problem is not enough are released.

yeah, i don't even have a DS yet, but i agree with WRE. it's library is impressive. it may not have a ton of ubisoft shovelware, but it has a great amount of great games. now if you take away first party games, the list decreases significantly, but still...

Sony's being too much of a "me too" player in these videogame wars.
My take? They shouldn't eliminate concept approval altogether. The shouldn't shorten QA time. If it's anything the home consoles show is that you can rarely have too much QA time. Diminishing the SDK cost is good. Pushing for lower prices (they should do this for the PS3 to really compete with Microsoft) is also a great idea, so long as the developers still get a fair share of the profits.

Maybe they should court consumers with a low price point for the PSP Go.

But you don't need a Go to play any of these games... Cheap ass gamers can still pick up a 2000 or a 3000.

I'll probably be getting one when they change the PSP Go consumer pricing, but whatever they have to do to get more developers onboard in the mean time is good.
Plus it's nice to see Sony starting to cater to developers more.

I just wish Sony would follow in Microsoft's footsteps in regards to XNA and the XNA Indie Games stuff.
I bet there are tons of people who would want to develop for the PSP and who have one at home but can't afford to pay £999999999999 for a dev-kit.
I just think this way you may see some amazing indie games and not crap remakes of old ones.

I have a feeling the Psp Go! will come with 50$ of psn money... Therefore its like it cost 200$ but forces you to spend 50$ right away on the psn store. With 50$ you can get one FULL game at 39.99 and one ps1 classic hit/ PSN Game at 10$ or 2 smaller games at 4.99$
They want consumers spending right away on apps, games and movies so it makes sense to me

I'm sure a lot of consumers would appreciate it. Surely, it would go some way in decreasing the sour taste a lot of consumers have in their mouths due to the $250 entry price.

Unless this means they're going to price it less than the current PSP models, I think I'm going to safely put my interest at still near zero.

Coyo t: In response to your points:
1. That varies on what each individual needs from their device. NO amount of money will make a PSP a phone. So I can't agree with you.
2. When you say "the [iPhone] apps are not as good as the free ones that can be had on any old PSP browser," you discredit anything you have to say.
You are wrong.
You are out.

Sounds again like Sony is behind the ball again. Here is a major FUBAR, inFamous flash game. HELLO jacka$$ you have a top title come out and to promote it via a flash game and don't even allow it to me used as a PSP application. That would have been an ideal tool for the PSP. I tried to get it to work on PSP and I get a memory error.
I agree with Jawmuncher. Shouldn't the download price on the PSN be a couple bucks cheaper since there is no UMD or packaging? That would get people buying from them more especially if there was a reward zone type option there. After spending X amount on the PSN you qualify for a redeem code for X off your next purchase either games or video.
Anthony, as far the the axis control it is there with the PS3 controller with the GO and the video out function. Now if Sony incorporated a PSP emulator into a PS3 firmware update they would have something.
If Sony really wants to get people developing for the system allow for a homebrew based content (apps and games). When PSP first came out there was emulators and apps for everything then the firmware started coming.
Sony wants more people to buy the system get the gaming price down. Don't feed me the line they have nothing to do with setting game prices.

Here is another game idea, why not talk to Konami about porting some of there old NES & MSX games to PSP. Last I knew XBLA had Contra. Think about playing Contra, Super C, Castlevania, CV2: Simon's Quest, Metal Gear, MG2: Solid Snake on the PSN for anywhere from $2.50 to $5.
Under that same thought what about ID. They released Wolfenstien for PS3 and Xbox via the stores but no support for the PSP. That would have been a great release. Sure it is an old school game but those are the ones that get hombrewed first, so there is a market for it. Quake 1 & 2, Wolfenstien and Doom. Hello.
Also why not talk to Atari also. Remember Combat?
If some one made a Contra themed game in LBP wouldn't you think there is a market for it. Even if it was removed by Sony.
Oh and Coyo t if the iphone is not so great why did Kojima create a MGS app for the iphone based on MGS4 before he did anything personally on the PSP?

During E3, just before they unveiled the new PSP, I'm pretty sure Kaz mentioned cutting dev kit cost by 80% or so to allow more people could make games for the system.

four or five fart-based titles? come on more like 30 first day. I hope Sony doesnt mess this up and keep people from making games for it. Its working for iphone. Sony just needs to follow lead and make money and not and try and change things or mess things up.
