Darkest of Days saves history at retail on Sept. 8
Trying to move beyond PC casino games, publisher Phantom EFX is ready to release the Darkest of Days on September 8 for PC and Xbox 360. The FPS follows a time traveler who must save certain soldiers in wars because "history needs them." You know, it's the anti-Terminator.
The game is being developed by 8monkey Labs out of Cedar Falls, Iowa. That's not really important, but we so rarely get to write about devs from Iowa that it felt like it needed to be said. Some videos of the game can be found on the Darkest of Days website. Sadly, nobody says, "Come with me, if you want to live," in any of them.

Why restrict yourself to one bunch of well-known villains from history when you can have them all?
nukee @ Jul 15th 2009 4:04PM
Sequels?
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 15th 2009 2:13PM
This game looks like it'll be fun.
Mercilessly slaughtering confederate soldiers as they take 30 seconds to reload their muskets.
100-round magazine FTW!!!!
JXCgunrunna @ Jul 15th 2009 2:33PM
who said you were not fighting the north? that would be an interesting spin on the game.
Damian @ Jul 15th 2009 2:35PM
See attached picture.
melloncollie @ Jul 15th 2009 2:54PM
@JXCgunrunna
No it wouldn't, because eventually your side would lose.
Sly @ Jul 15th 2009 3:13PM
melloncollie, the game is alternate reality. so the south CAN win.
JXCgunrunna @ Jul 15th 2009 3:19PM
And it sounds like you go on missions to save a person that will do something good for the world or their decedents would do something good for the world so it is possible that you could fight for the nazi's to save a German scientist who was in the war so that his great great grandson can make a cure for cancer in 2023
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 15th 2009 3:27PM
or you could fight the americans to protect a nazi? Now that would be interesting
dabamf @ Jul 15th 2009 4:25PM
Beat me to it...well done. +1

My Brother works for this company...We REALLY wanted him to throw in a cool Achievement, but alas he had no part of that :(
I have played a little of the demo...very cool engine!
Plus I am holding out for a free copy of the game :)
MystileArmor @ Jul 15th 2009 2:13PM

Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 15th 2009 2:15PM
Don't you mean do it nauwgh!
So we can travel to the year 3012 and defeat the evil robot king?
NoughtSoClever @ Jul 15th 2009 2:53PM
You will have to team up with Bryan Boitano for that one, obviously.

Interesting idea
player66 @ Jul 15th 2009 2:15PM
Sadly, nobody says in them, "Come with me, if you want to live"...yet.
Give them time, they'll come up with a clever, witty time-travel one-liner. Casual game devs are known for their witty dialogue and deep, rich storylines. Now, if this game lets you kill Hitler in his face? SOLD!
pedasn @ Jul 15th 2009 2:16PM
ah..... there's a pc tag. i love you joystiq
dabamf @ Jul 15th 2009 2:16PM
A bunch of enemies who have to reload between shots for 30 seconds, and me with an automatic assault rifle.
Can you say fish in a barrel?
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 15th 2009 2:18PM
Look up.
Drew -- PS360: uphillbothways @ Jul 15th 2009 2:56PM
Yeah! You can't say that 'cus Storm Eagle already did. Repetition will not be tolerated!
mutd1999 @ Jul 15th 2009 6:01PM
A good soldier could reload in less than ten seconds. ;)
...this coming from a guy who works at an 1812 site...sure it's earlier, but it's the same tech.
aoday91 @ Jul 15th 2009 2:16PM
I can I go back in time and kill Hitler before he rose to power
grover96 @ Jul 15th 2009 2:22PM
But he was your great-grandfather...it creates a time paradox. So for you, no.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jul 15th 2009 2:33PM
lol grover!
cimino15 @ Jul 15th 2009 2:16PM
I absolutely love this concept, and it's so funny because I've actually thought to myself before what it would be like if someone with an M4A1 with a ridiculous amount of ammo and a kevlar vest went back in time. Color me interested.
Mopo @ Jul 15th 2009 3:50PM
They do have cannons back then and what happens if you get shot in the face?
Arctrick @ Jul 15th 2009 10:27PM
@cimino15
I used to think the exact same thing. What if we COULD go back in time and pwn the soldiers of old with our helicopters, bulletproof vests, and assault rifles? WWII could have been over even faster with that kind of technology.
Unless we're talking about Wolfenstein and it's Mecha-Hitler, of course.
Stix Remix @ Jul 15th 2009 2:18PM
"History needs them"
Well, if history needed them, wouldn't they have already been saved? Isn't the protagonist therefore altering history by saving them? Or was he the original savior of these soldiers, but now is fulfilling what happened in the past by going back in time and saving the soldiers?
Is this a Back to the Future time travel? Or is it Bill & Ted?
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 15th 2009 2:19PM
You are part of an elite group, code-named "Wild Stallions"
LaughingTarget @ Jul 15th 2009 2:22PM
It's the Quantum Leap episode set in the Civil War crossed with the Terry Turtledove novel, Guns of the South.
LaughingTarget @ Jul 15th 2009 2:24PM
Dude, spell it right, Wyld Stallyons
Storm Eagle::The Blood Edge @ Jul 15th 2009 2:27PM
I admit my total screw up. But I am not accustomed to misspelling things...even when they're spelled "correctly".
Wyld Stallyons.
I apologize to my childhood.
dogmaticatheist @ Jul 15th 2009 2:36PM
Haha. I was thinking the same thing. The plot makes no sense whatsoever, like most time travel plots.
Captain Planet @ Jul 15th 2009 2:20PM
What happens if this time traveler kills his great grandfather/relative in one of these battles? Does the game end?
Because that would be awesome.
grover96 @ Jul 15th 2009 2:33PM

Futurama teaches us that when you do that, you end up finding your own grandma and having sex with her.
DWells55 @ Jul 15th 2009 3:49PM
Hopefully there's a paradox-free timecode.
nofriendo @ Jul 15th 2009 2:22PM
Will there be any difficulty to it? Whats to stop me from going back in time and just giving everyone the Rhino Virus?
doc j @ Jul 15th 2009 6:05PM
You're giving everyone the common cold? Oh No!
Neuromancer @ Jul 15th 2009 2:23PM
