Wedbush Morgan analyst -- and video game prognosticator -- Michael Pachter is back with more predictions for the future! Speaking with IndustryGamers, "The Pacht" said he believes it's only a matter of time (three to four years) before Apple takes a stab at console gaming by way of a "game-enabled" version of the Apple TV. "Apple TV is the device that they can turn into a console, and they have essentially the same goals as Microsoft -- to turn Apple TV into an entertainment and Internet hub," he proposed.
The game industry Nostradamus figures that "If [Apple] can get enough iPod users to download games, it's a natural that they can ultimately convince a large number of these users to buy a game-enabled Apple TV," for which he believes "a 2012 or 2013 launch" would be most likely.
Pachter feels that Apple will start off conservatively with regard to the scope of these "console" games, but eventually aim to take on the best its competitors have to offer. "We'd get cool stuff like World of Goo or Geometry Wars," he predicts, "But probably not super cool stuff like Gears of War until they bought a few developers." Of course, Apple could just fulfill another long-running prophecy and buy Electronic Arts.

See, this is where it starts getting annoying. When it's brought out of a post that does have her in a picture into a post that has nothing to do with her.
Granted, this is a Pachter post, but it's the principle of the thing.

However, you had better be careful. Sometimes people who have seen quite a few photoshops in their time can tell from the pixels.

Yeah I think I will pass on a Apple game system. It would be funny though. "Mommy why doesn't my Apple have any games for it"? "Because Timmy Apple Game Station like the Apple computer sucks and no one wants to develop for it".

I know I'm a Mac fanboy or whatever, but I have to admit that Apple creating a game system would be a pretty farfetched idea. Remember (or if you're my age, look it up) the Pippin? It didn't do very well.

The Pippin wasn't really Apple's console, it was designed by Apple and produced by Bandai, and Apple just licensed it to third parties.

Looks like the new Jack Thompson is just about revealed here.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that Apple would definitely attempt to get into the console business too. I think they would be more successful if they go the route of cloud computing and ally themselves with Gaikai or a service like that. It would work much better for their audiences who like no-fuss stuff.

I'd rather see all games downloaded on a massive HDD, because for Gaikai or OnLive you have to be connected to the internet and every time you play it takes up bandwidth.

ugh, more Patcher. told myself i wouldnt read this drivel but its too late now..
i would love to see what Apple could do in the console market but i dont think theres room for 4 console manufactures right now. plus wading into the generations deep console waters is probably too risky for Apple to invest serious cash.
Apple might bring ipod and iphone games to the AppleTV but making it a legit games console is a lil more than pipe dreaming right now..

I agree in this context. Apple is not going to enter the game console space on the terms of the game console makers, for the simple fact that Apple themselves don't have the necessary development talent to power a large library of exclusive games. They could pull a major buy-in, but i think their entry into what's like console gaming won't be an actual console, but a full-blown multimedia device with gaming as a side-function.
A wired iPod Touch, or something very much like it.

I couldn't agree more.
Apple always approaches things from a different percpective and this will continue to be the case when they enter the console business.

To Joystiq: I humbly request that a sort-of Bingo card be made out of all of Pachter's predictions. It would be great fun for the whole family!

I can see apple coming into the console industry. They know they have a hold on customers with the ipod and iphone. they know gaming in itself is a very profitable business.
The battle field will be quite interesting in the future if apple decides to jump into the console business.
