David Rutter, producer of FIFA for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, has put his foot down, literally. He's not moving it. At least, he's not moving it to play a 75-minute soccer match in his living room. When asked about the prospect of future FIFAs incorporating motion controls by utilizing Project Natal and Sony's motion wand, Rutter told VideoGamer.com, "There are a few things we can do, definitely, but we've not really started on it yet." Those few things do not include reinventing the franchise with unintuitive hand and body motions. "If it doesn't add to the overall thing, then it's pointless. I don't want it to be just this distraction, to be quite honest."
While FIFA might be the exception in an otherwise motion-inspired EA Sports business, we're sure all the head-nodding, inbounds wrist-flicking minigames you could imagine will be considered -- or worse, ported to FIFA 11. The trick, it seems, would be to perfect the motion caption technology: "Kick from the couch in all-new Energy Saver Mode!"

Scre motion controllers, how about reinventing the franchise with good controls and non-crappy AI?

He doesn't seem that cautious to me but rather quite open to the idea.
I would bet that the the "B" team (that did Ultimate Team this year and will do World Cup next year) will do something motion related for a 2011 release.

Surely if you're going to play FIFA or what not with the motion control stuff you may as well go out and play football properly?
And that pretty much stands for most games. Don't shoehorn motion in, people like games because it allows them to do something they can't do in real life. I dunno about you but Id never be able to do all them high kicks the kid was doing in the Natal video, but I can do a bit of button mashing in Tekken easily.

microsoft and sony are really still clueless on this whole motion thing - it's either all or nothing. if sony and microsoft want to use motion control, they really need to make a specific controller made just for it like on the wii. i doubt motion could really work for their platforms as it is right now because of the types of games they attract.
waving your arms around like an idiot (and without having precise control of the game like what is capable on the wii) or a stupid wand just don't cut it.
nintendo really got it right with the wii. because of the way they designed their controller, which can function like a cursor or a motion device, an entirely unique class of games exists that you can only purchase on the wii, while the ps3 and xbox 360 are simply PC replacements (since people no longer buy dedicated desktop pcs souped up for gaming).
even making the wii less powerful was a good choice for nintendo. otherwise, it would just have xbox/ps3 ports (which would make people simply avoid the nintendo console, like with the gamecube). with a slower machine, the wii not only HAS to get exclusive games, it's also cheaper to do so (by some estimates 4x cheaper), enabling publishers to take a greater risk on the console. after the gamecube, that's exactly what nintendo needed.
sony, microsoft: look at nintendo and take less than a half-assed lesson. selling trilogies of testosterone-fests won't win you the average gamer, which is today the 25-40 something FEMALE.

While I agree that Microsoft and Sony are going to really need the right type of games, I find some of your comments a little puzzling. Why aren't Natal or the Sony Wand as precise as the Wii remote? Sony's is basically exactly the same as Wii Motion Plus, but the camera technology makes it even more precise and capable of a lot more things. And Natal showed off some very fine movements it can detect, it's not simply a case of waving your arms around, it detects your entire body including individual fingers.
My biggest problem with Natal is that it's most probably going to be used along the lines of the sixaxxes, used for little bits in games, like pushing to open doors, etc, but not really utilized the way it should be.

I would agree with your logic, except sony didn't half-bake anything. Natal is still silly (try playing a fast-paced accuracy-required FPS), but the demo of the ps3 wand showed it as far better than the wiimote. Heck, I actually think the wiimote AND the wiimotionplus are half-baked. they're jerky and innaccurate, and they require FAR too many peripherals, which must be taken off and exchanged just to play a different game. It's great for mariokart, but in my experience it's gotten in the way far more than it's helped. Looking closely at Natal, the motions are not perfectly fluid or accurate. They don't need to be for cheap family games, but that's about it.

If they're gonna use it on FIFA, they should only use it for things like celebrations, penaltykicks, freekicks, handpasses when the ball goes out of bounds and cornerkicks.
I don't think that people will want to try a bicyclekick on this, especially if they have hardwood floors. There'll be alot of neck injuries.

You call throw-ins handpasses where you are?
This stuff still sounds like junk to me. Maybe, maybe the after-goal celebrations (which I loathe anyway, but that's another issue), but a soccer match is made up of fifty throw-ins and thirty corner kicks. Using motion control "only" for them will not cut down the problem of requiring too much motion input to pull off a game.
In the end, EVERY bit of motion control has to be optional, or else people who live in small apartments can't play.

The way I see it, motion control shouldn't take over the gameplay experience, but it should compliment it, (or even just an option)
Lets use this FIFA example. Natal/Ps3 wouldn't be very effective with running around and passing to eachother. However could be used for things like throw-ins, corner kicks or penalty kicks/shootouts.
Things like that put you with more control and provide more immersion (since YOU kick that goal, not a button press) but doesn't ask a lot of the user that would make te game strenuous and annoying if it was relying on motion.

Oh and also i can't believe how many people that don't know a flying fuck about fifa are posting. Lousy controls???? I guess some people havent played Fifa 09 at all.

Anyhow, I applaud MS for trying to be innovative, and Natal may very well turn out to be the best thing ever, but so far I'm just not interested. If I wanted to do all that I'd go outside and play actual soccer.

Good, I hate plonked in motion controlling. Please Micro and Sony, don't force us to use motion for everything, thats just lame. I don't want to kick from my seat, I don't want to head from my seat either, and I certainly don't want to backflip in my lounge to celebrate, I just want to chill out after a days hard work, log onto fifa online and play against mates, its as simple as that.

Wouldn't make sense on the PS3 anyway. You'd have to strap a lights to your shoes, elbows, knees and head.

I think that this guy is missing the point. The motion controllers from both Ms and sony are not intended to completely replace the standard gamepad, they are there to be used in certain situations. Nintendo has made a killing of off putting out games that you are only supposed to play for a half hour at most and then put down (or play in groups and only play for short periods at a time, handing off the controller). No one expects you to waggle your way through a game of FIFA, Madden or NHL games.
Motion controllers are supposed to expand gaming into new places, not completely change existing control schemes.
Its not like ms and sony are saying: EA, you must adopt motion control for every single game ever! they instead are saying "see what you can come up with using this new interface." This is what I think was most intriguing about sony's e3 demo: they didnt try to hype it to be the be all end all of IO, instead, they said, "Hey, look what you can do when you have extreme accuracy."
MS said, "Hey, make some cool mini games with this interface, or maybe even break down the 4th wall completely. Also, try navigating a ui using only your body."
EA is missing the point here.

also, many people seem to forget that the PS eye is also capable of body tracking. That, when used in combo with the light sticks, can do depth perception similar (but not quite as well probably) as natal.
just sayin.

This guy's consternation is the exact reason why Natal is going to have one helluva time when it comes to 3rd party support, and equally lends to the reason why 3rd parties have been constantly scratching their heads about Wii.
3rd parties clearly don't understand the purpose.
