We feel for our UK-based gaming brothers-and-sisters-in-arms. We've seen the gaming industry putting them through the financial wringer many times in the past, but a recent report from MCV describes the cruelest economic hardships they've ever had to face -- Activision has kicked the UK price of Modern Warfare 2 up to £54.99 (close to $90), and according to the report, other publishers may plan to follow suit, raising the prices on their titles as we move into the holiday season.
The price hike is attributed to rising game development costs and the faltering strength of the pound -- still, compared to last holiday season, when titles like Prince of Persia and Far Cry 2 hit store shelves for around £40, it's a pretty sizable leap to make in just one year. However, not everyone is following Activision's example -- Electronic Arts responded to MCV's report, confirming that it would not increase the RRP of its holiday releases. We'll see which strategy pays off once the smoke from the holiday shopping season clears.

At the moment its one game, 'follow suit' means it hasn't happened yet. I'm talking present here.

I won't pay more than £25 for a game. I just wait until they've been out a while and buy them when the price comes down. A good game now is just as good 6-12 months from now so I'm in no rush.
Of course this does mean I still haven't played COD4 since it has retailed its price incredibly well. It's stil £28 on Amazon and I'm not buying it until it's under £25.

Wasn't it Activision that threatened to stop supporting the PS3 if Sony won't drop the price? I always knew Activision were a bunch of bastards but not this much!

i for one will not be paying this price...I get 25% off, but still I will end up paying over the £40 average price mark, I have a bad feeling that activision will be doing this with all their games. Expect a REALLY REALLY expensive guitar hero bundle with number 5. this also makes me worry for the price of the pristige edition of the game which as I gather is around $140.

"...development costs..."
Excuse me, but didn't we already receive a raise in prices this generation due to that very same reason? This game should then make MW1 look like last gen, which it won't, and why should it? It's not like the development costs went up.
And furthermore, Modern Warfare 1 did so well, that I doubt this price hike is even needed. At all. On any level. Seriously.

Exactly! Shit went from 50 USD to 60 USD in 2005. Just because the consoles are trying to refresh their branding for the second half of this generation (it's far from over) doesn't mean publishers should get away with pretending the games are any better or more worth it.

Boo-fucking-hoo.
Who the hell cares?
This game has already the MSRB price of $75 in Europe.
This is something Europeans have to deal with (and worse) every single f'-ing day.
This is not news. This is just a bunch of crying for nothing.
I just checked the price for Modern Warfare 2 here in Sweden and it is $78 so $10 less without ANY price hike.
We deal with this shit on regular basis.
No big deal. This is seriously not news.
Crying and bitching about this is an insult to what we Europeans have to deal with every day.

Just want to say that at Argos (online) you can preorder the game for £45, they are currently doing a deal for 20% off preorders with the promo code 'GAME20', knocks the (vanilla) edition of Modern Warfare 2 down to £36.

Speaking as a UK gamer, i think the price for this is ridiculous. I have an average paying job at best and to me, spending £40 on a new game was always a lot of money, especially considering... you know not all gamers have mums and dads that pick up the bills after them. While the pound £ may have dropped slightly in worth, i still feel £40 is still a lot for new games. £55 however just shows what a big "F*** you" Activision is saying to us in UK buying there games. I personally can't believe anyone would actually believes its because of the pounds worth excuse, especially since publishers have been charging Europe so much for games for the past year now.
Still its an incredibly smart business move, as they know us hardcore gamers will pay it in order to play Modern Warefare 2. A dick move, non the less.
Publishers bitch and moan about used sales and well, this is a big example of why gamers choose to buy used, instead of new. Activision will likely get away with this but if this happened in North America, there would be more of an uproar about a price jack.

one more reason i am glad i dont yet have a console. Soon to be a PS3 (slim) owner and am very pleased that i can go and get some great titles for a bargain when the time comes (bioshock, uncharted, MGS4, ratchet & clank, GTA4 for £80 sounds fine to me).
also i like having a PC and the starting price for MW2 being £30 instead of £45. i know what format i'll be getting it on.

My first thought was "fuck that" I'm not going to buy it, but, if the price isn't going to be raised in the States, at least to that extent, then I'll simply import it.
PS3 games are all region free, though actually I was planning on getting this on the PC, as I prefer keyboard and mouse for this type of game.... still, I did get CoD4 on both PS3 and PC as well.
I wonder what the Steam price will be for this! ;)
Anyway, yeah, for those PS3 owners, just remember you can import the US version anyway. I am 100% NOT going to be buying it from the UK, just out of principle. I bet MW2 is a popular torrent when the time comes, and Activision have themselves to blame. My mates and I were all ready to buy this game, but if this article is true, they've already said they'll be downloading first, and possibly buying 2nd hand later.

And this is why I have no guilt in copying games. £60 for a game is a joke when you consider we could buy it for the equivalent of £37 from the states.
No doubt it won't be region free so as far as I'm concerned Activision could have had my £40 legitimately but not they'll get nothing. My £1 investment will go to verbatim for their blank disc.
