How do you describe the "next generation" then?

The problem isn't the term itself - it's the fact that the industry turned it into an adjective that was supposed to mean certain things about how great the current systems are, and now those things are too standard to use it that way again.

I, for one, hope this longer life ends Holiday 2012.

(claps hands)

The Wii needs a shorter cycle. That way in a few years i`ll get to buy a NEW Nintendo and its endless barrage of system "enhancements".
Controller halves sold separately, controller precision enhancements, weight scales, pulse monitors, bank account plugins, body temperature sensors, arousal detection system, body moisture content analyzer, breathalyzer and last but not least facial wrinkle detection for determining the age of the player.

@ Mr Khan is over 9000

Except it's not. Development costs for the HD twins are ridiculous to the point that if you're not releasing a AAA title, you're probably losing money. Plenty of developers have shut down due to lack of funds. Sure the current economic meltdown is a part of that, but they may not have needed to worry had they not been losing so much money in the first place.

A premature console gen could force many developers exclusively over to the wii and portables if they don't want to go under.

They pack enuf tech into this thing and it WILL be like a new console, probably allowing them to bundle new boxes with Natal and keep the existing pricepoint. Knowing them they'll charge a gazillion dollars for the standalone Natal though

Home is easy to escape because even if you haven't deleted it by now, it's just a little icon under network that you never think about. The NXE is impossible to escape. Everytime an avatar waves at me, I cringe. Next we get to play games with no controller, yipeee!! I would rather drop a turd with no toilet.

So its obvious now that Microsoft is completely trying to adopt Nintendo's strategy. I cant wait to see the reactions from the hardcore when they realise the next xbox is going to be a rebranded 360 with body waggle.

I don't see anything from Nintendo that compares to this. The motion sensing is but a fraction of Natals abilities. Speech and facial recognition = the new hotness

Body waggle?

The waggle in the Wii exists because of the impreciseness present in the controller that promised an experience that would totally immerse the player into the game. They had to create an add-on to fulfill that promise. If Microsoft releases Natal only to have to release an add-on to enhance precision then and ONLY then will they have adopted Nintendo`s strategy of milking their customers endlessly. Discussing the tech is 100% relevant as it is by its implementation that a business strategy is executed. How many Xbox 360 games are unplayable because a special doo-dad is required to play it? ZERO.

I think Sony and Microsoft both know that they are under pretty intense pressure with their respective motion sensing devices. If these things aren't exactly 1:1, I don't think people will be interested. Nintendo got a bit of leeway for their remotes not working perfectly because people were still amazed with it, as no one had ever done something like that before. But now that it's commonplace, people are expecting more.

From the videos I've seen, Natal does show lag and does seem to be imprecise.
That damned ball swatting game just sickens me! It has Wii-HD written all over it!!
But I think the add-on might come in the form of a patch.

The main difference between the two is that MS gets it whereas Nintendo doesn't. MS will put this garbage out, but at the same time they will keep putting out tons of games for people like me, so I won't even need to worry about Natal. There will still be a standard controller.

@ tmac,

Ummm, not with the high amounts of dollars they are investing into Natal they won't.

You think Micorsoft likes selling around 30+ million consoles a generation and just appealing to the "core" gamer? NO.

Enter Natal. They NEED that Wii market. They are a business. They like printing money just like Nintendo.

Keep rocking yourself to sleep with self-fullfilling dreams of Gears of War 6: Uber Edition buddy. You'll be required to "waggle" right along with the rest of us before you know it!

@Tmac:

You better believe that MS isn't just going throw this out there. They're treating this like they're launching a new console. Of course they will keep putting out the games you like, they don't really have a choice. I hate to burst your bubble when I say, but if MS thought of it first, they would have launched their own Wii, not the Xbox. I don't really get what you mean when you say that MS 'gets it'.

As you know, it's all business, and in business, money matters. They don't really care about the gamers. None of them do.MS are trying to appeal to people that aren't like you and will be putting those people ahead of gamers like you for the next little while as they try and release Natal.
