Most of us know the Star Fox 2 saga by now. The sequel to the SNES game that started it all was in production and the Japanese version was all but finished when Nintendo decided to pull the plug in favor of creating a game for its new console, the N64. That hasn't stopped the Nintendo loyal from wanting to play the game, and for the last six years, a small group of fans have been working on their own version of a sequel.
The game is called Shadows of Lylat and will likely not be received so well at Nintendo HQ, though that hasn't stopped SOL Team from planning Windows, Mac OS, and Linux releases. If you're skilled in the ways of Code-Fu and want to lend your talents to the project, the team is looking for you! They can't promise you any money, but we're pretty sure you'll get all the disappointment you could ever want when the cease and desist letters start pouring in.
Dear Nintendo, Go ahead and kill this. Kill it and prove once and for all that you don't give a flying fuck about the gamers who made you the giant that you are today. Kill it and demonstrate how you are afraid of the demographic that created you. Kill it and show us how you are afraid to grow with the audience that grew up loving you, tossing them aside for the next batch of new minds to entertain then discard. Kill it and prove every single one of us who thinks that you will kill this project without fail right. Kill this project and prove once and for all that it's time for all of us to move on. Signed, The loving gamers who still want to root for you
"Kill it and prove once and for all that you don't give a flying fuck about the gamers who made you the giant that you are today"
LOL
You mean the "hardcore gamers" who turned their backs on Nintendo during the N64 and GC eras? The gamers who, if it had been up to them, had seen Nintendo out of the race today? You're like the abusive asshole boyfriend who treats his girl like shit, but then gets all pissy and emo when she leaves him for someone else, someone that does make her happy.
Hardcore gamers are a bunch of fickle children that don't deserve Nintendo.
I'm proud I never left Nintendo, I'm loyal to them, and I'm sure there are lots of people that are still loyal to them, or the gcn would have flopped even more (undeserved, because was better than the ps2, but didn't have 3rd party support).
And the ones that call themselves "hardcore" these days, are just that in name, the real hardcore grew up with arcades, Sega and Nintendo, and mostly with the games they call now "casual" or "kiddy".
I guess this is better off staying underground. Pretty sure it won't be released publicly if ever they've finished it once the C&D arrives. Anyway, that trailer looks pretty good. Maybe they can alter some Star Fox elements and turn it into a new IP instead that way they could make it public and avoid the C&D or any copyright infringement from Nintendo.
What makes people think that it's going to get cease and desist orders?
There are hundreds - if not, thousands - of mario fangames on the internet, have any of them got C&D orders? no. Not to mention there are hundreds of sites that host sprites ripped straight from mario games, a process which can only be done (to a good quality anyway) through the use of illegal roms, have any of these sites ever been shut down? no.
As long as they aren't selling this, then there will more than likely be no C&D
I don't quite understand what I'm supposed to be impressed of here. "Oh looky, we've made a bunch of 3d models and put them in an the boringest looking planet since Star Fox Command and in a generic space scene. Oh, and we'll have coop, which is kinda like co-op but with chickens, because multiplayermultiplayermultiplayer and deep plot too since a good storyline is the most important thing right after multiplayer."
You took the words right out of my mouth. Hardcore gamers care only about whether the feature list contains multiplayer, co-op, and epic storylines. Oh and it has to be a shooter with lots of normal mapping and bloom and explosions. It's all games are anymore, and it bores the shit out of me. I am so glad Nintendo doesn't cater to them any longer.
Thank you. I was reading these comments to look for a voice of sanity, and I didn't find it until I got to the back. Yeah, it's kinda pretty, but the trailer is dull. Nothing happens except for a few shots of stuff flying. And then words tell us things like "a deep storyline," "intense multiplayer," or whatever instead of showing it.
Bleh.
And, for the record, I do a lot of 3d modeling, and it's not hard to model/render anything that I saw in that trailer, especially if it's taking you 6 years.
First off you little snot, I'm not a hardcore gamer. I'm not a casual gamer either, so to borrow a phrase, congratulations on your Texas Instruments level powers of deduction. I'm a full on gamer. What is a full on gamer? Simple. I will play any video game given just one rule. Is it fun? If yes, then play game, if no, then screw it on to the next title.
Secondly, my point is that Nintendo constantly shoots stuff like this down for no damn reason. This is an epic project, being done by true fans of Star Fox, that will never be completed because Nintendo will tell these very dedicated fans to stop or they'll be living in cardboard boxes. These are the people who, like me, grew up playing Nintendo, and still love to dust off the old systems and stroll down memory lane. Nintendo is infamous for punishing these people, and THAT'S what I'm criticizing here, so go take your console elitism and shove it because games are too rich a medium to declare one company the best and ignore all others.
By the way, I'm curious. What's the oldest system you've played on actual hardware? Cause I can tell you mine, an Atari 2600. Hell, I don't even have a next gen system right now because I'm going on a world tour of last generations games (Currently playing Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 3, FFX/FFX-2, and MvC2 on my dreamcast). Hardcore game that, you snot nosed brat.
bm is a mite overzealous, but your comment still had the wrong tone. Why would Nintendo doing what they are legally supposed to do have anything with shitting on the fans.
This looks cool, but unfortunately this is going to be shut down faster then you can say cease and desist! Nintendo is not going to allow their IP to be used without there permission.
Wow. It looks to be even a greater re-make/sequel than Half-Life Black Mesa. Now all we can do is pray that this great product actually comes out and isn't Square-Enix'd.
What if Nintendo likes what they see and bring these guys in and actually have this game made and released for the Wii? Nintendo has had some moments where they were really cool. You never know...

I never left Nintendo either, but I'll be honest, when I see crap like the Wii Vitality Sensor I really start to wonder if Nintendo still cares back. WiiWare and DSiWare are two other good examples. People have been hacking Nintendo games since the dawn of time making custom edits. Some games have even been rereleased to include features from these hacks (The Turbo function in Street Fighter 2 comes to mind), had having these seemed like it would allow the everyday person to create top quality games like with XNA... until they announced it would cost 10k for a DSiWare Devkit. I honestly don't know how much the WiiWare kits cost, but I'm betting it's a similar trend, and it only serves to keep out people with good ideas who can't raise such an insane amount of cash for something that might not even pay off in the end because it seems like Nintendo doesn't have a clue how to market either service or get compelling titles into either of them. (Seriously, look at the DSiWare catalog, and tell me otherwise.)
Look, I want to root for Nintendo, but Nintendo are the ones who are making it hard to do so.
Also, the day I realized that arcades were dead was a devastating moment.
To everyone who's saying this will get slapped with Cease & Desist orders, there's a slight chance that it won't.
Over a year ago, I sent an email to Nintendo's legal department informing them of Super Chick Sisters, a game made by PETA to serve as propaganda against the restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken. Why they would care about a game like this, you ask? Because it was a blatant knockoff of Super Mario Bros., going so far as to include characters from the Mario universe without even so much as a mention of Nintendo owning the rights to them. To date, Nintendo has done absolutely nothing about it, so the game can still be found on one of PETA's websites, and many other gaming sites.
Who knows, maybe Nintendo will actually throw their support behind this kind of game, since they're starting to embrace the user-created content idea.
