@John- you make no sense. The pharmaceutical companies have stated that they would rather sell a cure then give one. I bet if your mom had breast cancer and you were a billionaire you would have the cure. Anything else you have to say is mute at this point.

Even now there are huge issues with neo-nazis getting togheter as "animal rights" groups, while in reality they are all about the eugenics. Comparing one against the other is not a big leap.

Well now, this has been productive.

There are alternatives to animal testing, but currently I do not know of any which could fully replace animal testing, at least in medical research. Most of the alternatives being developed use either human or animal stem cells to grow tissues which mimic the structure and features of the particular organ or tissue a drug is supposed to target. It's not there yet, but one day it will be and it will replace a significant amount of animal research in testing new pharmaceuticals. Also the possibility of producing tissue sample assays which contain most if not all tissue types found in the target organism could effectively eliminate the majority of animal testing done. I seriously doubt it will ever be eliminated entirely, however. It's very difficult to tell how a particular drug will react in a biological system by limiting your testing to tissues isolated from the system as a whole. Someone raised computer simulations as a possibility, and it may, but the computing power necessary to accurately model a living organism is still many many years away and depends greatly on just how far the fields of cell biology and biochemistry have advanced in that time.

What I do feel is the most pointless and tragic waste of animal life is the use of animal testing for cosmetic purposes. Apparently I'm not alone on this as the EU is requiring the cessation of all animal testing for cosmetics by 2013. This is one area in which there are models that can be used in lieu of animal models, but animal models are still more economical.

And for the record, I'm a vegan and I don't really appreciate the assumptions expressed by so many of you that PETA somehow speaks for every vegetarian, vegan and animal rights activist on this planet. They don't. I'm also a former biochemist, so I feel I have some ability to intelligently talk about the subject.

PETA is pretty crazy. They align themselves with the ALF (Animal Liberation Front) that is basically a terrorist group that does many illegal activities, including arson, in research facilities and the like in the name of "save the animals".

Many people don't understand how dangerous the intentions of PETA are. "Save the Animals" is a good slogan to use at universities and such to have young people join the cause, but they do not know the whole story. They would prefer if we didn't even have animals as pets. They are against insulin because it is created with animal products, so that would rule out diabetes treatment. And the Head of PETA has diabetes and takes insulin. How hypocritical is that? Many other treatments would be rendered useless if we followed the word of PETA.

I understand the feelings people have about animal testing, but what would the alternative be? Human testing? and that does happen once the drugs pass animal testing. So if we didn't have this sort of research, we would literally be living in the dark ages still because no new medical procedures and cures would have been tested.

I am a huge animal lover myself, but I disagree a lot with the methods used by PETA. They act without really considering the consequences of what they are asking of the world.

But hey, "Save the animals" is catchy and feel good right?

Animal testing for cancer DOES NOT WORK.

Torturers have "cured" cancer for decaded on animals but when they turn to humans it doesn't work because humans ARE NOT rats/rabbits/monkeys.

If animal testing is so useful why does there have to be clinical trials? BECAUSE ANIMAL TESTING DOES NOT WORK.

But then you all don't care because if you don't see animals squeeling in agony after being tortured to death you can pretend it doesn't happen right?

Sigh.

I think it's fair to say we wouldn't even HAVE organizations like Peta if we hadn't killed a couple of Sabre tooth Tigers and Woolly Mammoth. The problem is, Peta can't tell when things are actual problems(I.E. excessive cruelty, endangered species) worthless fights(a fly only lives a single day: Killing any one fly is only infringing on hours of mating and feeding)and thing that are just being an asshole to our own species. Not being an asshole helps get people behind you.
