The site said you decide to choose how to price a song you create from 50 cents to three dollars. Also, you get 30% of income

Considering they don't have to pay licensing fees they could easily charge a fraction of that and still make money by the bucketload.

Jesus, people are dumb. $1.29 is the price for some songs on iTunes, but it is hardly a "standard" Go look up your favorite band in the iTunes store and tell me how much one of their songs costs. I'd be willing to bet it's 99c, just like the vast, vast majority of other iTunes songs.

Pretty sweet.

I'm a little bothered/confused by the note on the source page that says tracks will be on the RB Music Store and Xbox LIVE Marketplace, while only "select songs may also appear on PS3".

Basically RBN is based off of Microsoft's XNA system.

Like you can make an XNA game and submit it to be a Community Game on Xbox LIVE right now, it's the same concept, except instead of a game, it's a Rock Band track.

It'll all be managed the same way, Peer Review by the community. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the same community (XNA Members who currently review the Community games, will be the ones to review the RBN submitted songs).

So, since it's all tied in to Microsoft's XNA platform, I'm sure you see the problem with getting it on the PS3. Sony doesn't have a system in place where people can submit their own games and content to PSN.

It's really more of a Harmonix didn't make RBN on PS3, because they can't do it.

Remember when GHTunes was announced and Harmonix said they had plans for something similar but wanted to do it right?

This is definitely doing it right.

Comments:

This is so good, the RIAA will try to stomp it out existence!

Maybe Harmonix can be hired to train Red Octane how to code a song (HA!)

Could this mean free music? I see many CD's bundled with RB tracks. Bad ones.

Seriously, kids, don't make a song just to harvest achievements and "100%"s

If I was in a band and we were good and wanted to get our music out to more people, this would be great for me. But since I'm not in a band this just means more music for Rock Band to me, which is always a good thing.

Since this uses Microsofts creators community and XNA, it means that the PS3 will never see the service in full swing and people that want to use the service to put songs on the network will have to use an Xbox 360.

Great, another thing shafts the PS3 because Sony doesnt have the necessary support on their system. Looks like I'll be ignoring this....

I'm fairly certain that if Harmoni could put out 10 songs a DAY then there would be no need for the Rock Band Network...

Thats to be a reviewer. You don't have to be a premium member to buy tracks, just to peer review them.

I held off on Rock Band for a very, very long time...but this has made me a believer. Also, my band will be on Rock Band as soon as this is available (which I'm excited about because the guitar solos I play will be sooo fun on expert!) :D

Bands pay around this much to be on iTunes...if a band has a following large enough to make profit via Rock Band then it is definitely worth the investment. Hell, as a musician in a band myself, I'd pay that much just to be able to play my band's songs in a videogame and I don't even own Rock Band yet!

A Harmonix dev who posts on the Something Awful forums posted that they are working with "outside parties to make this available universally." I think it's just going to take a little longer to get it going on PS3 because Xbox already has a system in place to do this sort of thing, but that it will eventually be fully available on the PS3. In fact, I'd be shocked if this were not the case.

I'm a huge fan of MS's XNA/Indie Games initiative. Its best days are ahead of it, though.

I'm damn impressed with this whole idea. It has so much potential to get all sorts of music out there. The organization, tools and infrastructure required are phenomenal, and show that Harmonix and MTV games are thinking big for the Rock Band platform. Of course, the main reasons is to make money, since more songs available means more songs sold, and they get their cut without having to do the song authoring themselves.

But the sheer variety of music that could come of this really excites me. Harmonix has already done a great job in mixing things up in the various genres they've made available. It's obvious they care about more than just "the hits." Opening the pipeline to anyone willing to step up means that this eclecticism could explode, making it far more likely that there's something for everyone at the next Rock Band party.

Meanwhile, Guitar Hero, with their occasional dribble of DLC (even if they do get some very good tunes once in a while), is left in the dust.

The scope of this whole thing just knocks me out. Well done, Harmonix.

From what I can tell, if you have a XNA Creator's Club subscription, you're in for the RBN. Awesome.
