Mafia II developer walks us through E3 demo
One and a half months after we got a chance to check out 2K's next open-world crime drama, Mafia II, the developer has released a video walkthrough of the segment we laid eyes on at E3. We were quite taken by the excellent voice acting and explosive action featured therein, but we're curious what you think!
Check out the video after the break, but be forewarned -- they bleeped out all the totally sweet cursing out for this particular demo. What kind of third person, open-world crime drama doesn't have profanity? That's just f---ing silly. Whoa, what the f--k? Where did those f---ing letters -- oh s--t! What the f--k!?

Put in your age for the violence, and put in your SSN for the swears.
Geoff @ Jul 18th 2009 8:42PM
Why is there no blood? For a game that is trying to look realistic you would think that they would make the people die realistically...
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 18th 2009 8:52PM
CENSORED
joeman @ Jul 18th 2009 10:15PM
Either it hasn't been added yet, or it was censored like in assassin's creed gameplay vids.
Gripman @ Jul 18th 2009 11:10PM
I saw blood.

Holy be-geezus that was sweet! Has more of Scorsese flavor this time. I cannot wait to play the hell out of this!

Wow, when did cursing started to be considered worse than violence? Sorry for those who think that way, but if you believe that saying 'fuck' or 'fucking' is worse than shooting a defenceless guy and watching his blood spill then you're a fucking retard.
There were so many awesome things in the demo, it's a shame that those bleeps ruined an otherwise perfect demo. I particularly liked the part in the elevator when they were calmly speaking and drinking in between two crossfire zones. And the way Vito was slowly walking towards his next victim when he picked up a shotgun.
I can't wait for this game, it's great how some games are aiming to achieve this cinematic feel to them. First Uncharted and now Mafia II make me a happy games/cinema lover.

I always think cursing in a video game is compensating for something... I mean, if you're good at conveying emotion in a script without riddling it with profanities, it shows... intelligence... couth?
I'm not sure what the right word is, but I don't mind cursing, just when it becomes the center of attention within the game's dialogue. I'm not too crazy about excessive violence, either.
In my head, these two things are considered "special effects". Once you've dropped the F bomb a dozen times in the first 30 minutes, the "special" in the effects wears down...
McWilly @ Jul 18th 2009 9:56PM
I couldn't care less about cursing or violence but it does seem off having people from the 50's using their french in every other sentence.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 18th 2009 10:08PM
people who were concerned about the Red Menace, comic books corrupting their children, TV rotting their brain and swear words polluting their culture in the 50s probably WERENT IN THE FUCKING MAFIA
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 18th 2009 10:09PM
wiizer i think a good script writer would be one who sticks to what his characters would say. Do you really think mafia enforcers are all well educated, extensive vocabulary wielding eloquent gentlemen?
Wiizer (Michael Pachter MUST DIE.. Professionally) @ Jul 18th 2009 10:32PM
Dark Wayne,
Don't get smart, re-read my comment and see where I said every character needs to be written EXACTLY the same way.
Short answer: I didn't.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 18th 2009 11:28PM
i didnt say you did, i said that saying profanities are a crutch for real emotional language is stupid when you have brutish unthinking killers, not poets
Wiizer (Michael Pachter MUST DIE.. Professionally) @ Jul 18th 2009 11:48PM
Dark Wayne,
To be brutally honest, what I am saying (and have said) is going over your head, so let's agree to disagree. Thanks.
joeman @ Jul 19th 2009 1:45AM
I guess since the profanity was real and the violence was not...
j.howlett @ Jul 19th 2009 6:33AM
joeman said exactly what i was going to.
Ashitaka @ Jul 19th 2009 8:30AM
@ Wiizer
I'm not particularly fond of either.. But it just seems weird to censor cursing and leave killing a defenceless guy in the demo.
@ joeman
I don't quite understand what you're saying. The profanity is as virtual as the violence - it's in a videogame.
Eh @ Jul 19th 2009 6:41PM
Mafia uses cursing and violence in a realistic manner, it would be stupid and distracting to leave it out. Godfather would have been a piece of garbage if it was rated PG. Some games may use cursing as toilet humor since they cant figure out how to be funny but I dont see what that has to do with this game.
Toilet humor isnt nearly as much of a problem as games and movies that have to censor themselves of cursing, violence, and especially nudity just so they dont get a rating that wont sell as well. Censorship is the worst thing you can do to things like movies and games.
Max @ Jul 18th 2009 9:25PM
is it just me, or does this game look just like the Godfather game (the first one); the cars, the scenery and the gameplay. i think i'll cool this The Godfather Game HD!!!!
Tyler @ Jul 18th 2009 10:07PM
Mafia's main inspiration, I'm sure, is the Godfather books and movies but as far as the games go this will blow the Godfather out of the water. Mafia just has so much more detail, character, and much much better voice acting IMO. So to answer your question, it is just you. But cool it anything you like buddy.
McWilly @ Jul 18th 2009 10:19PM
It looks like the Godfather game because it copied off the original Mafia game which came out 4 years prior.
Crimson_Ryan @ Jul 18th 2009 10:27PM
It looks like The Godfather because its in the 40's.
The Baron @ Jul 19th 2009 2:03PM
How about Mafia 1 came out before the original Godfather game, and blew that shit out of the water?
Incredibly well-written, immersive, solidly-paced open world action game > repetitive piece of ugly shit with even worse controls.
Eh @ Jul 19th 2009 6:46PM
You should have noticed that the game is called Mafia II, meaning its the 2nd game, so there must have been a first game that came out a long time ago.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 18th 2009 10:33PM
"Mother Fu--- Co-- Sh-- Di- "

please, someone recognize this
Gripman @ Jul 18th 2009 11:15PM
Sweet. The game looks good. I like the first Mafia game, and the story was excellent. The facial expressions look top notch in this game.
Big D. @ Jul 18th 2009 11:45PM
The graphics are simply amazing. Wow. Just wow. But it looks to have the same issue the first one had for me. The cars are too SLOW....it took him ages to get to the destination. Still this game was not on my list at all but it just got bumped up to a rent.
i.c. weiner @ Jul 19th 2009 12:30AM
ummm did you listen to him at all? he said he was taking the scenic route to show us around the city. plus, this game isn't need for speed, they didn't have 500 hp cars back in the 1940's
Big D. @ Jul 19th 2009 12:59AM
It's not the route, it's the pace of the cars...SLOW...I understand the cars are old but I felt like I was still in those times in GF 1 and 2 without the cars being super slow. It doesn't have to be THAT realistic.
The Baron @ Jul 19th 2009 2:07PM
Well, compared to GTA4, the city is a fair bit smaller, so the slow pace of the cars doesn't really matter.
Big D. @ Jul 19th 2009 2:43PM
Well it did in the first one, to me anyway. I just remember it taking a LONG time to get anywhere and if the cops were on you, forget it. I got frustrated with the first one early on because of that which is why I wasn't looking forward to this one, but it looks a little better, still the cars look too slow in this one nonetheless.
Rk0n @ Jul 19th 2009 12:36AM
Game looks sick, I liked the fact the cars had directionals.

Pachter the Haiku Artist @ Jul 19th 2009 5:30AM
The original Mafia is still better than most of the games released this year, and the sequel looks like it will be a similar masterpiece of game design, at least atmospherically and gameplaywise.
I admire 2k Czech for not having produced a fast cheap sequel after the ciritcal success of the first game. They took their time and have updated the series to a new modern standard.
This series has the chance of earning a place in the hall of fame of computer (&video) games.
Jesus (PSN: Luttdawg) @ Jul 19th 2009 10:24AM
Wow, graphics are mind blowing. Looks like the gameplay is there to back it up too! The Godfather 2 just looks so weak in comparison.
Matt Already Said That @ Jul 20th 2009 7:34AM
WOW. this just shot up my list of must have's...from what they show - mind you it's obvious that this demo was geared to show off the visuals - it's about on par with GTA IV.
I was thinking about how amazing those snow streets would look if each vehicle actually left snow tire tracks behind them and they stayed within a certain limit (then regenerated obviously) it would look SOO real...but I'm sure that it would be quite a memory hog. The future is bright though when game this beautiful are coming out somewhat under the radar.
Lookhappy @ Jul 20th 2009 3:38PM
that looks great!
