Sega brings emulated Streets of Rage to the iPhone

Unfortunately, our friends at Touch Arcade were none too impressed with Sega's port, saying the game suffers from tremendous slow down and renders the game "unplayable on the 3GS." Oh no! We're too busy spending our time with Drop7 to play anything else on the iPhone, so how about you tell us, Joystiq Biomass™. Anyone drop the $4.99 for Streets of Rage today and encounter any problems?

Careful with the iphone fanboys, there around somewhere.
Jocaju @ Jul 18th 2009 6:19AM
I agree with Rick, not that the iPhone as a smartphone suck, but as a gaming machine it's horrible. Street of Rage need buttons and D-pad.

There are a mess of good games on the iPhone. This, however, doesn't look like one of them. Try Drop7 or The Moron Test, they're both excellent.
Volkodlak @ Jul 19th 2009 11:13AM
No, porting games badly to the iPhone sucks.
Kbcool @ Jul 22nd 2009 4:05AM
You've been able to run Megadrive/Genesis emulators on handsets like the Nokia for over five years now. With a full set of games. How is this news? One game on the iphone. Make it two with Sonic.

Damn, not even the iPhone can handle all that blast processing.
Obie @ Jul 18th 2009 12:54AM
While I like my iPhone, I have quickly realized that unless the game has been designed from the ground up for the device, chances are it will suck.
Some great games like Fieldrunners and Rolando really shine, while some ports like this game...show exactly what NOT to do.

This has actually been a problem with every sega iPhone port thus far. Sonic sucked, golden axe sucked, and apparently so does this. It's the horrid emulator that sega decides to use.

Who the fuck cares?
mocax @ Jul 18th 2009 1:01AM
um.... where's the Start button?
MystileArmor @ Jul 18th 2009 1:12AM
Seeing this makes me think of Super Double Dragon.
I want a remake/re-release of that on the digital distribution thingamagoogles.
sony boy @ Jul 18th 2009 1:25AM
god, they need to stop porting stuff and make something new.

I actually went to a friend's house this evening and ended up playing this on a homebrewed Wii, and I remember how fucking awesome it was.
Jigsaw @ Jul 18th 2009 4:40AM
So if they're putting this game on cell phones outside Japan, why an emulated version when they could just port the already-available-in-Japan Bare Knuckle Mobile?
lolJoystiq @ Jul 18th 2009 7:59AM
Ahh iPhone, the joke of the gaming world.
Sad how some people are actually convinced that it's a viable gaming platform.
How pathetic.
phobic99 @ Jul 18th 2009 9:11AM
I actually shelved my DS in favor of my iPhone mostly due to the ease of carrying 1 device. Yeah I'm gonna miss the RPGs the most but I don't miss carrying my DS at all. I don't mess with any ports that I've played on actual consoles though.
PojoMofo @ Jul 18th 2009 8:42AM
fellow Blackberry owners can back me up in saying there is only one game you need on your phone.....Brick Breaker
Volkodlak @ Jul 19th 2009 11:15AM
That's only cause you can't get Drop7 on the Blackberry :P
johnny @ Jul 18th 2009 9:54AM
Saying the iphone sucks as a gaming platform is pure stupidity. There are some great games for it like rolando, real racing, tiger woods, need for speed and at least 20 other must have games already. This game was just ported badly but for those who actually learned how to read sega posted a message on the games info page that they are working on a patch for iphone 3gs and thats why it doesnt run good.
aristokrat @ Jul 18th 2009 11:52AM
Drop7 is stolen from that NUMB3RS online game a while back, that involved slowly handing out clues over time based on aggregate performance. Awesomely fun, nonetheless.
phuink @ Jul 18th 2009 4:36PM
Sega should build a Phantasy Star Online for the iPhone.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 18th 2009 9:30PM
Damnit Sega, how do you screw up on a technical level porting a game like Streets of Rage to the iPhone..?
teitoku @ Jul 19th 2009 8:52AM
Funny, plays awesomely on my E71.

What is that policy? I've never heard of anything like that
