Wii MotionPlus sells nearly 500K units before Wii Sports Resort releases
We've got another week until Wii Sports Resort hits retailer shelves, but as per the recently released June NPD numbers, we already know that the Wii's MotionPlus has moved nearly half a million units. Ars Technica dug up the numbers of individual units sold for the peripheral attachment (169,000) as well as the numbers for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 sold w/ MotionPlus (205,000) and found that, a full three weeks before the July 28th release of Wii Sports Resort, the peripheral add-on is already in 374,000 consumers' homes.
We all know the old adage "Good software moves hardware," but in Nintendo's case, apparently "barely any software" is enough.

Ok, Nintendo must have magical elves working for them, because that's the only way they can keep selling stuff even without the games to make it work.
Jrinswand @ Jul 19th 2009 12:26PM
Xera: I hate to be a dick, but if you are dyslexic then maybe you shouldn't try to insult people.

there are a few games out.....I suppose MOST people just went ahead and bout them because they knew they would need 3 more when Wii Sports Resort came out and didnt want them to be in short supply....
In anticipation for such a shortage I have snatched up 10 of them to resale on eBay with the Wii Sports Resort games I have pre-ordered....just Because the Wii isnt an eBay Cash cow anymore doesnt mean certain Wii Games wont be...lol
mr nimblewick @ Jul 19th 2009 12:11PM
Speaking as someone waiting until Wii Sports Resort to by my motion+'s, screw you.
tmacairjordan87 (aka Mr. Negativity) @ Jul 19th 2009 12:21PM
That's a good idea and if I had the spare cash I'd do that too. I used to do that when the wii was selling for like 400 on ebay but unfortunately most of that money went to college bills and car payments/insurance.
xera077 @ Jul 19th 2009 12:22PM
Yea if Tmac considers: "Bring the down Wii Campaign 2010"
As College Work.
Vidikron @ Jul 19th 2009 12:24PM
There won't be a shortage IMO.
Mr Khan is over 9000 @ Jul 19th 2009 12:56PM
You're probably going to be burned. I don't think the hardware is going to be in quite that hot demand. It'll sell, to be sure, but not oversell. Not in this climate
xera077 @ Jul 19th 2009 12:56PM
*Bring down the Wii 2012*
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 19th 2009 1:04PM
I dont think I will get burned that bad...I mean I just bought a few....when the Wii was hard to come by I would buy 3 or 4 and resale them for almost $100 more than retail if not more....and I did the same for the Wii Fit...every year there are hard to find Wii titles dont get mad at me for trying to make a lil extra money....lol....not like I put them on eBay at outrageous prices....people bid on them and made them that high...
Vidikron @ Jul 19th 2009 1:13PM
The difference being that the Wii and Wii Fit were sold out pretty much instantly when they released. I've seen literally dozens of WM+ units at every store that sells games. So while I expect WSR will drive up demand, I doubt it will dry up the supply of WM+ units. Between the units packed with games and the dozens on the shelves I think there will be plenty to go around. You may find a local shortage here and there, but I doubt that will be enough to demand a premium over MSRP, plus the cost of shipping, on a $20 peripheral via eBay.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 19th 2009 1:26PM
True....but only time will Tell...I'm guessing that "New" Super Mario Bros. and Wii Sports Resort will be big sellers this Holiday season....a lot of people trying to relive their days as a kid might want Mario...lol...but if I dont make money off of it there wont be a loss....so no harm no foul....
Elranzer @ Jul 20th 2009 10:05AM
What's your eBay username? I'll need to add some negative feedback to your profile, then block you.
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Jul 20th 2009 10:54AM
yea cant add feedback UNTIL you buy something......sorry
Shadow El @ Jul 20th 2009 12:31PM
Wow. You're an asshat.
To add some substance to this post, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to be awesome.
xera077 @ Jul 19th 2009 12:01PM
Tiger Woods 10 and Wii Motion + = Win.
That game is fun and I hate Golf.
Gamers take everything to seriously when a games supposed to be fun not a bunch of menus and flash..
Hell Ms. Pacman is still awesome.
Gamer4Life @ Jul 19th 2009 1:22PM
Wii Motion + = Win.
You mean Wii Motion Win if my C++ is correct?
Tyler @ Jul 19th 2009 2:42PM
hahaha @ gamer4life +1
WPstart @ Jul 19th 2009 12:03PM
A lot of those WM+s were probably bought for Grand Slam Tennis with extra +s for multiplayer in that and Tiger Woods.
Vidikron @ Jul 19th 2009 12:09PM
"the MotionPlus is already in 441,400 consumers' homes"
The WM+ is certainly going to sell millions, but I can tell you that this assumption is incorrect because it assumes one unit per home. I, for example, have two WM+. It would be more correct to say, "There are 441,440 MotionPlus units already in consumers' homes."
AustinAM @ Jul 19th 2009 12:13PM
OH SNAP!
People are crazy. o.O
Carlos @ Jul 19th 2009 1:27PM
Typical American generalisation as seems to be the thing on joystiq comments. Tiger woods 10 is pretty much the best golf game ever made and as it includes both motion+ controls and nunchuk analog a la 360 the motion+ controls are far superior.
Grand slam tennis is also very good and both games got favourable reviews in the European press, as has wii sports resort. Heck the EA has even gotten round friend codes for a quality online experience.
All the nintendo bashing equates to bullying really, with most out-of-date core gamers just jealous of the wiis popularity. If nintendo were in the same position as last gen you would All be bashing 360 owners for not appreciating innovation, but instead you're all too embarressed to be lumped in with the casual crowd. It's quite pathetic really.
For the record I own all 3 consoles and they all offer distinct advantages over each other but I wouldn't say one has a better range of software than the rest.
Tyler @ Jul 19th 2009 2:49PM
No.
Sly @ Jul 19th 2009 4:06PM
your last sentence was chock full of considerable fail. the 360 and PS3's libraries are pretty close to each other, but the wii's doesn't come close.
TwEE @ Jul 19th 2009 5:59PM
Too true Carlos..
Sly @ Jul 19th 2009 9:48PM
ahh, should have known not to say something bad about the wii on a wii article. but i'm just being honest, i haven't seen anything interesting except for galaxy, brawl, and madworld. 3 games aren't worth a console purchase to me.
Reader @ Jul 20th 2009 12:55AM
I was first in line to defend the Wii... until I got one. Don't generalize people that don't care for the Wii. We'll see if this motion plus deal works out, but I felt scammed by the Wii controller (and consequently, don't like the Wii).
Artemis Gone @ Jul 19th 2009 12:19PM
Being someone that works in retail for gaming, I can vouch and say that A TON of people bought WM+ thinking that it improved all games. I had to inform at least half of my WM+ sales that it only supports Grand Slam, Tiger, and Wii Sports Resort when it comes out.
I'm sure many got them in preparation for upcoming titles, but I wouldn't be surprised if a big chunk of those numbers are those that don't understand what games it's for.
tmacairjordan87 (aka Mr. Negativity) @ Jul 19th 2009 12:24PM
Considering how Nintendo's making most of their money this gen off uninformed people, I can't say I'm surprised by your story. I haven't seen the box yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it says something to lead people into believing it works with everything.
Cody @ Jul 19th 2009 3:19PM
"Considering how Nintendo's making most of their money this gen off uninformed people,"
That's funny to hear coming from you, because I swear you're about the most uninformed person frequenting this blog.
Sly @ Jul 19th 2009 4:01PM
no, tmac is right in this case. i personally know one highly competitive family that bought a wii just to show up their neighbors. they didn't even buy games for it. a good number of sales were just people riding the bandwagon. i know some people that rode it that like their wii now, and play it on a regular basis, and i know some that rode it, and never touched it again except when guests came over.
Fun DMC @ Jul 19th 2009 4:02PM
Damn, tmac, you must have some sore ass nuts right now.
After all, Cody's been on 'em for months
tmacairjordan87 (aka Mr. Negativity) @ Jul 19th 2009 4:16PM
Meh I just ignore him and let him gather his downvotes. His own fellow nintendo fanboys don't even like him. You can't argue with someone like him, and the result if you do is brain cell loss (and I like having those!).
I mean, what can you say to someone who calls a person who's been following gaming just about their entire life uninformed?
JXCgunrunna @ Jul 19th 2009 4:58PM
are you kidding tmac? cody might not be right but looking at ur comment history, you have many many more downvotes than he does. If anyone collects downvotes, its u.

What the hell dose that even mean?
Cody @ Jul 19th 2009 7:11PM
Giving tmac shit is just downright amusing at this point. especially when he throws up ally oops like these.
Fun DMC, why after ever reply to tmac that i make, you reply to me about making a reply to tmac?
Fun DMC @ Jul 19th 2009 7:17PM
"Fun DMC, why after ever reply to tmac that i make, you reply to me about making a reply to tmac?"
I don't do it after every one of your replies, because my fingers would have fallen off by now if I had. You got robot hands or something?
I reply because it's getting tired. I typically don't reply when you have a point to make (a lot of the time, it seems as though tmac is straight up trollan), but when you don't (which is most of the time), when it's just you going 'Well guize watch me spew ad hominem nonsense in lieu of a point', that's when I chime in.
I'm not the only one who does this, if you don't recall - you've garnered plenty of replies over the last few months from people who honestly don't see the point in you calling tmac a troll - as was said in another thread, you calling him out is like a convict calling a death row inmate out on murdering someone.
ChromeAlchemist @ Jul 19th 2009 7:19PM
Wow, it must be a slow news day if you tmac even comments on this article.
Oh well. Troll more Jordan, Troll more.

"What the hell dose that even mean?"
Really? You really can't figure out what that means? It's not calculus or anything, I figured it was common sense to us.
Also I'm serious about this, if no one talks to Cody he will eventually go away. Literally no one likes or agrees with him ever on here (like I said, not even his fellow ninty fanboys) so if no one talks to this attention whore he'll get frustrated and go away. It's happened before.
Sly @ Jul 19th 2009 9:46PM
moptimus, your word twisting skills know no bound.
Cody @ Jul 20th 2009 8:55AM
"Literally no one likes or agrees with him ever on here"
LOL kind of how "no one" likes JRPGs...
or how "no one" actually thinks The Conduit is a good game.
TwEE @ Jul 20th 2009 9:02AM
"Really? You really can't figure out what that means? It's not calculus or anything, I figured it was common sense to us."
So Tmac everybody who dosent consume the same entertainment as you is either too stupid to know what they really like or was tricked into thinking they like it? Is that what you're implying?
Fun DMC @ Jul 20th 2009 2:22PM
"or how "no one" actually thinks The Conduit is a good game."
It really isn't, though. It's average, at best.
I'd take MadWorld over The Conduit any day of the week.
ZenGaijin @ Jul 19th 2009 12:19PM
The sad thing is wii motion plus by itself is 24.99 and if people just waited that could get a game with it too for 49.99.
