For those of you hoping that upcoming Visceral Games hack-n-slash Dante's Inferno would be heading to your PC, prepare to be disappointed. Joystiq sister site Big Download received confirmation earlier today from EA that currently there are "no plans" for a PC release.
In fact, the representative at EA went one step further, not only confirming the game's console exclusivity but saying, "When Dante's Inferno was originally announced in December, we attached no platforms to the project ... when we came out with a first look for press in February we announced 360/PS3 and then in April we announced PSP ... We never announced a PC SKU nor are there plans for any." Sorry, PC gamers! Look at it this way: At least you can't "go to Hell" now! (Hey-o!)

Why do I get the feeling that the game's ending going to involve Dante, a bunch of demons, and a certain R. Kelly song?

Well as an exclusive PC gamer coming from all this generation of consoles and last I can say they are going to be missing the best community of them all. Plus to be honest I was not even interested in the game, but I hate developers not seeing the King of gaming as a valuable medium right now. The PC puts up the best sells numbers of them all and has the best community. I guess my response to this is fortuity developers know PC players are not stupid enough to buy games that are crap or lacking what every PC game should have over console.

I don't know. The artwork and style is pretty amazing. Just based on what I've seen of the game so far, I think there's a chance that those who only game on PCs might be missing out with this title.

Yep, they're going to be missing out on the community with the highest piracy rate and the lowest sales per game without the name "Sims" attached to it.
Reply
Posted: Jul 20th 2009 6:17PM (Unverified) said
Why don't you get your facts straight you POS piracy rate is very small and I guaranty you console people would pirate more if they could more easily. Even the developers from Crytek who bitched about it said it was so minimal that it did not really affect sell charts. O btw Sims is not even on the hardcore lists you have to understand that there are three different tiers in PC gaming (casual, high-end, and MMO).

First off, chill out Xanthonus. Yeah, console people probably would pirate if it was more easy, but here's the thing...it's not more easy. I'm well aware of the different types of games, I have a fairly decent PC and play quite a bit of games on it through Steam. If you want to take Sims out of PC game sales, then you're looking at PC software doing even worse. I'd also like to see where the hell you came up with this, "The PC puts up the best sells numbers of them all"...please give an example other than Sims or WoW.

Actually don't bother with an example, because for each game you can come up with there will be 10x more console games that have done better than their PC counterparts. We all know that, it has nothing to do with being a fanboy, it's just fact.

I have to laugh at all the hardcore/casual bullshit when it comes to video games and I wonder why it only seems terribly prominent in this hobby. It's not like I'm going to go to Barnes and Nobles and get told that Dune is for hardcore and Harry Potter for casuals or some stupid shit like that.

and once again the old pc is piracy stuff, can anybody remember that piracy is NOT pc exclusive, there are hundreds of pirate copies for both the wii and the xbox, the games are always available in pirate torrent places in seconds, piracy in the xbox is REAL. So forget about that old argument that pc is not a good selling platform, ah! and: CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw
you can get hundreds of examples of games that sell by going to steam, if that place were not making money with the pc there“ll be no steam since more than 6 years. And not all the games that are sold in the xbox are instant hits, just ask bionic commando for example. And if you want some other examples of good numbers without sims or WOW on it how about crysis, bioshock, call of duty, fifa 09, crysis 2 and now even monkey island??

He is right in one of his claims - PC gaming brings in more money than any other platform; this was confirmed in sales reports from last year (admittedly published by the PCGA, but they can't just lie in public reports and get away with it).
HOWEVER, you console gamers are also right, sales of 'hardcore' games can be very low, or very high (Sins of a Solar Empire, Civ, IL2 - some examples of the more niche types of game that thrive on PC and sell 3-5 million upwards).
I'm a PC gamer, and it really hurts me to see the level of abuse people level towards the platform, for no reason other than they don't play on it. I have tried them all, and to me nothing comes close to the PC. Different people like different things, but some people will just lie about things they actually don't know (clue: PC's don't cost $2000, PC games are much cheaper than console games, user-generated content is free and often of very high quality - massively extending the life of games like CS and CoD2, which is still played by millions on a daily basis).
It may not post the big sales numbers anymore, but as a platform in general the PC doesn't seem to be going anywhere. And if it does die one day, then the originality and soul created by the online communities that support good games, and the indie developers and modders, is going to vanish from gaming.

If the PC was posting the sales numbers for games than EA would no doubt put this as well as all of their multiplatform games on PC. It's not like they would pass up huge amounts of money for no reason. All I'm saying is that multiplatform games seem to be selling better enough on consoles for companies to think they shouldn't even bother with a PC version.

GTA IV PC (basically a 360 port) is a lagfest even on high end PCs that runs Crysis smoothly on the highest settings.

It's not really the platform for hack n' slash. I was one of the few who bought DMC4 on PC (and rightly so, that was a piece of shit on any platform). Not many PC gamers have 360 pads plugged in, so there's just no reason for them to buy these titles.
But still, I was looking forward to this given how much I loved Dead Space (and the excellent job they did of porting it).

I'm still confused as why games for the 360 are -so- hard to port to the PC as their basically the same. The controls maybe hard to change for use on the PC, but everything else seems like it be easy to transfer.

So...to make it short, the PC platform is not as profitable as consoles?
You consider it as consumers paying for nothing, but ultimately, console gamers do, in fact, spend more on game-related materials, correct? Especially on things which tend to have a high profit margin.

Er, what? You're blaming developers' lack of care towards the PC platform on Microsoft? I don't see why it would be their fault. Every game companies choose themselves whether they want to port a game towards a particular platform or not.
If you want something to blame, then blame the PC platform for it not being as profitable as consoles.

Mario,
As a gaming platform, PC software sales were the highest of any platform last year and those reported revenues came from digital distribution sales alone; once retail sales are considered, that number almost doubles. People often blame piracy for the lack of PC game sales and, while certainly a factor, the truth is that you console gamers overpay for the content you purchase and ya'll seem to be remarkably happy in doing so.
Your games cost $10-$20 more, yet they're often underperforming (from a technical perspective) and underwhelming (from a visual perspective) even when one considers the lack of things like mod support. You'll pay $5-$20 for asinine things like a pack containing a whopping 3 maps, character costumes, weapons skins, or multiplayer modes even though most of those things should've been in the game at launch or rolled into a patch for free. You'll pay $5-$10 for something with the quality and production value of a free to play PopCap game.
That doesn't work on our platform because we're not idiots. Why should we pay money for those things when we, as a community, have the tools and talent to make them all on our own? Why should we pay $5 for a new character when we have artists, modelers, and animators who can do a better job than the developer can even though its only made possible through their dedication and free time? Why should we pay for a multiplayer mode (ala RE5) when a group of people can, within a matter of months, literally convert one game into another? Why should we pay a single penny for a map when we can have dozens made (most of high quality) within a matter of weeks?
People often cite piracy as the reason PC gaming is "dying" when, in reality, developers often ignore our platform because you console gamers are too goddamn complacent and willfully ignorant to realize your being financially raped for no entertainment gain.
