MS opens Xbox Live update preview program

Would you like to be one of the movers and shakers to get the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update before all the filthy, "regular" people? If so, you'll be happy to know that Major Nelson has just announced an Xbox Live Update preview program. Microsoft ran a similar program prior to the NXE, which allowed lots of gamers everywhere the chance to see all the fabulous updates early.

The new update includes plenty of cool new features, including Games on Demand Movie Parties for Netflix and Avatar Awardables, so we know you want in. To register, simply head over to Microsoft Connect, sign in with the Live ID connected to your Gamertag and then fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey. The program is open to both Silver and Gold Xbox Live members, though Major Nelson notes that preference will be given to Gold members. If you make it into the program -- MS is accepting "multiple thousands" of participants -- you should be contacted in about a week.

I really want in just to see all the details on the full game download...but my Live subscription ran out a couple days ago. Oh well, I'll still try anyway.

Oh, thanks for reminding me about gold for a dollar, I need to cancel that before it autorenews...I hate Microsoft for making me call in just to cancel that, it really should just be an option on xbox.com.

Remember, guys, you can always go to your credit card provider's website and get a temporary credit card number for these types of purchases.

Then, when companies like Microsoft try to hit that same credit card a year later without your permission, they just get a big ol' faceful of, "I Don't Think So!"

I've tried the whole generated credit card thing and I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. MS will Ban your account, and the only way to undo it is to pony up the $50 as a renewal fee. Prepare for many phone calls as well because they will need to authorise and do all this nonsense to get your account back up and running.

I've used my CC so I wouldn't know, but can't you just buy a subscription card at a store? Or is it required to enter a CC?

you can buy a prepaid visa a any walmart!
Or you can just buy a xbox renewal when they go on sale and when you add it to your account they ad the time plus what you have left

I wish. Doubt it would work. You could always give it a try though.

That AND you need your console ID number from the system settings, i.e. you have to have your console in front of you to register.

The NXE preview was piped directly to your console, it wasn't a code you typed in. You need your specific serial and console id. I think you can get your SN on Xbox.com if you've registered for repairs... and who hasn't.

Can't you wait to get home? It's not a first-come first-serve deal. And it's just a test for a free update anyway... I'm not inclined to sign up, but then again, none of the new features are really pertinent to my interests.

They've gotta win me over with "Hot Local Singles" ads...

Microsoft's making this a little more complex than it needs to be. NXE was easy for people. And now, there's an update, and they're making us do all this crap.

Still, I think it should be cool.

This is a preview (Release Candidate?). The actual update will happen just like any update, unless you sign up for and get accepted into this preview program.

I just can't wait for the price structure. Unless I'm missing something, I haven't heard jack how much these games will cost.

But seeing Max Payne (part 1) for $15 isn't encouraging.

Well, it depends on how you look at it. It should be a nice, fun little feature that keeps people interested. However, other than that, it's pretty useless.

But for some reason, I like it. I love movies, so...

Are you refering to a page where the middle section is blank other than green rotating dots? cos I'm getting that too.

Nope, I have Firefox on Ubuntu and was able to sign up without a hitch.
I hear on Majornelsons blog that the signup site is getting hit hard with request so that could be causing the delay.

not sure what it was then, after the green rotating dots, it asked to put a user name in, I did so, continued to the next screen, and it told me I had to put my information in again. I just did it in Internet Explorer and it worked fine, usually if you have trouble doing something involving Microsoft's website, its due to using a different browser other than IE...

I signed up but my account is silver now, so I might not get first pick. We're all getting it sometime any way, so it's not all bad if you're not picked

I was a silver member and was still picked for the NXE preview (although I was in one of the last batches).

I can't say I have any interest in watching a movie with friends on Xbox Live, but I can understand how it'd be useful. Being able to watch something with someone far away is pretty cool, assuming you only want to talk to the people there, and aren't actually particularly interested in just watching the movie.

If you don't like Twitter, then it's something to be ignored but I like the idea of being able to check updates from my 360 and bore people with boring updates about totally awsome kills in Halo 3.
