MS opens Xbox Live update preview program
Would you like to be one of the movers and shakers to get the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update before all the filthy, "regular" people? If so, you'll be happy to know that Major Nelson has just announced an Xbox Live Update preview program. Microsoft ran a similar program prior to the NXE, which allowed lots of gamers everywhere the chance to see all the fabulous updates early.
The new update includes plenty of cool new features, including Games on Demand Movie Parties for Netflix and Avatar Awardables, so we know you want in. To register, simply head over to Microsoft Connect, sign in with the Live ID connected to your Gamertag and then fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey. The program is open to both Silver and Gold Xbox Live members, though Major Nelson notes that preference will be given to Gold members. If you make it into the program -- MS is accepting "multiple thousands" of participants -- you should be contacted in about a week.
Good luck!

tmacairjordan87 (aka Mr. Negativity) @ Jul 20th 2009 12:54PM
I really want in just to see all the details on the full game download...but my Live subscription ran out a couple days ago. Oh well, I'll still try anyway.
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 12:57PM
Same here. My Gold is gone. Should've gotten it when it was a dollar. Dang it.
CTC XBL-supapaypamawio PSN-ctclaw @ Jul 20th 2009 12:59PM
Oh, thanks for reminding me about gold for a dollar, I need to cancel that before it autorenews...I hate Microsoft for making me call in just to cancel that, it really should just be an option on xbox.com.
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 1:04PM
I agree. That's BS, dude.
copa @ Jul 20th 2009 1:24PM
Remember, guys, you can always go to your credit card provider's website and get a temporary credit card number for these types of purchases.
Then, when companies like Microsoft try to hit that same credit card a year later without your permission, they just get a big ol' faceful of, "I Don't Think So!"
pibs @ Jul 20th 2009 1:43PM
I've tried the whole generated credit card thing and I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. MS will Ban your account, and the only way to undo it is to pony up the $50 as a renewal fee. Prepare for many phone calls as well because they will need to authorise and do all this nonsense to get your account back up and running.
SaltyGary @ Jul 20th 2009 1:59PM
I've used my CC so I wouldn't know, but can't you just buy a subscription card at a store? Or is it required to enter a CC?
atx1980 @ Jul 20th 2009 7:29PM
you can buy a prepaid visa a any walmart!
Or you can just buy a xbox renewal when they go on sale and when you add it to your account they ad the time plus what you have left

Woohoo, the new E84 error is coming quick.

IM AT WORK and i dont know my serial number !!! the humanity!!!
can I make one up?
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 1:06PM
I wish. Doubt it would work. You could always give it a try though.
knightatdisney @ Jul 20th 2009 1:07PM
That AND you need your console ID number from the system settings, i.e. you have to have your console in front of you to register.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 20th 2009 1:09PM
The NXE preview was piped directly to your console, it wasn't a code you typed in. You need your specific serial and console id. I think you can get your SN on Xbox.com if you've registered for repairs... and who hasn't.
McWilly @ Jul 20th 2009 1:12PM
err... me
MystileArmor @ Jul 20th 2009 1:49PM
See I am at work too, and I just drove my ass home, filled it in and drove back. I love being the boss >=D

Can't you wait to get home? It's not a first-come first-serve deal. And it's just a test for a free update anyway... I'm not inclined to sign up, but then again, none of the new features are really pertinent to my interests.
They've gotta win me over with "Hot Local Singles" ads...
MLWW @ Jul 20th 2009 1:05PM
I filled out the survey ;)

While you're at it Joystiq/Blogsmith/AOL, give Paul all that swag he signed up for as well. He definitely earned it.

above guy: you apparently haven't been here long, so I'll say this for you once. With maybe a few very obvious exceptions, everything I say is in jest and should not be taken seriously, at all. I'm not a playa hata.

+1to you and your comments Dark_inchworm.

Hey, wake up! I wasn't taking it seriously, your comments were just stupid, that's all.

Welcome to Joystiq.
Duke @ Jul 20th 2009 2:55PM
His comment was pretty darn funny I thought. Maybe you're the one who needs to wake up there sparky.
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 1:14PM
Microsoft's making this a little more complex than it needs to be. NXE was easy for people. And now, there's an update, and they're making us do all this crap.
Still, I think it should be cool.
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 20th 2009 1:18PM
This is a preview (Release Candidate?). The actual update will happen just like any update, unless you sign up for and get accepted into this preview program.
eNrique @ Jul 20th 2009 1:19PM
I think the movie party feature is the most stupid and useless thing ever, and Twitter comes very close.
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 1:27PM
Well, it depends on how you look at it. It should be a nice, fun little feature that keeps people interested. However, other than that, it's pretty useless.
But for some reason, I like it. I love movies, so...
goboColossus (LIVE, PSN - gobopop) @ Jul 20th 2009 1:31PM
"I love movies, so..." I'm looking forward to interupting every scene with conversation.
shadowbender @ Jul 20th 2009 2:06PM
You're actually right. That would be a problem.
Snowblind @ Jul 20th 2009 2:27PM
I can't say I have any interest in watching a movie with friends on Xbox Live, but I can understand how it'd be useful. Being able to watch something with someone far away is pretty cool, assuming you only want to talk to the people there, and aren't actually particularly interested in just watching the movie.
If you don't like Twitter, then it's something to be ignored but I like the idea of being able to check updates from my 360 and bore people with boring updates about totally awsome kills in Halo 3.
eNrique @ Jul 20th 2009 2:47PM
What would be the point of watching a movie with someone if he/she isn't on the same living room as you, that's pretty stupid for me, waaaayyyyyyy tooo stupid.
Second, I like to watch all my films with DTS(Blu Ray is awesome), so how would I talk or hear while I'm watching a movie?.
I just don't see it working, and let's not even talk about the point of it.
Mouthsmasher @ Jul 20th 2009 6:47PM
I'm going to have to agree with eNrique. It IS pretty useless and stupid, but despite the fact that I'll probably never use it, I can see how it could be appreciated.
captainprotonx @ Jul 20th 2009 1:25PM
I just can't wait for the price structure. Unless I'm missing something, I haven't heard jack how much these games will cost.
But seeing Max Payne (part 1) for $15 isn't encouraging.
Paul @ Jul 20th 2009 4:49PM
well it looks like mass effect is going to cost $19.99 assuming this is legit:

anyone else having trouble registering? for some reason it keeps asking me to put in my information after i submit my username and wont register me...
Brian @ Jul 20th 2009 1:50PM
never mind, its only if you use Firefox I'm guessing.
justiceblob @ Jul 20th 2009 1:53PM
Are you refering to a page where the middle section is blank other than green rotating dots? cos I'm getting that too.
pibs @ Jul 20th 2009 1:53PM
Nope, I have Firefox on Ubuntu and was able to sign up without a hitch.
I hear on Majornelsons blog that the signup site is getting hit hard with request so that could be causing the delay.
Brian @ Jul 20th 2009 1:56PM
not sure what it was then, after the green rotating dots, it asked to put a user name in, I did so, continued to the next screen, and it told me I had to put my information in again. I just did it in Internet Explorer and it worked fine, usually if you have trouble doing something involving Microsoft's website, its due to using a different browser other than IE...
