Playcast hoping to beat OnLive to the game streaming punch
We're still not comfortable with the magical technoworkings that apparently allow OnLive to summon games from the ether -- to think that other companies have the engineering prowess to pull it off is terrifying. According to a recent press release, a startup company named Playcast Media has teamed up with an Israeli cable network called Hot to stream "PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 quality games," straight to Israel's set-top cable boxes. The service is in beta now -- in Q1 2010, it'll rollout over all of Israel. It's expected to hit "major markets" in the US, Asia and Europe later that year.
That's a lot of heady claims from a service we know so little about. Fortunately, an Israeli tech journalist named Denis Vitchevsky got a chance to check out the service, and came off with an optimistic impression. He says the technology is "somewhat similar to OnLive," and that the demo he witnessed "worked quite well." He claims Playcast has signed agreements with a few publishers, and is promising a huge library at launch. For now, the service is offering PC ports -- but no M rated games just yet, due to a lack of parental control features.
We're trying to get more info on the service, but as you might imagine, it takes a while for emails to zip between here and Israel.

I believe these services will only offer PC games. That's a beauty of the PC platform and also a curse, it has no one company behind it.
Maybe these services will greatly propel PC gaming to the masses, to the mainstream and thus get much more developer support. : D

Wouldn't Microsoft be behind PC gaming for the most part? But yea, I guess they don't do much in PC gaming.
Nerdy Desi @ Jul 21st 2009 1:11PM
Ah, they've largely abandoned PC gaming for the Xbox. : (

Just what we need, a knockoff of something that most people don't think will work. :(
I think OnLive is gonna fly, but do we really need another one?

Why didn't they just say it will stream PC games? I'll bet since most are not familiar with PC gaming, they had to say "PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 quality games"

It feels like this market is already getting crowded, and if it works then I don't think Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will take it lying down. I really like the idea, and I hope it works, I just don't want to see 10 different versions of it.

This has the potential to really boost PC gaming and compete it with consoles and that is fantastic!

It should take two seconds maximum for the e-mail to be received.
The availability of the people you address them to, however, is different.

The company has worked on this technology for the last four years. I saw video clips when they announced this partnership the other day, and it looks nice. They started a beta test for a 1000 clients yesterday, one that will last until the launch in early 2010.

The company also mentioned they are looking to bring Call of Duty as well as SWAT games, but no GTA since the service currently lacks parental controls.
According to them, they have deals with major publishers such as Activision-Blizzard and Disney, with more coming soon, Such as EA.
They are currently showing it in SD, but promised better quality once the service is officially launched (HOT is currently in the process of improving her entire infrastructure). Also, they said that one major feature they are working on is multiplayer gaming. Since everything is happening in a remote server, communications between the players should be fairly easy and quite responsive.
The business model is currently unknown, but more information will be revealed in the coming months, as the launch date approaches.

How is it possible the Israelis could have this technology before North America?! Does this make any sense? Leaders of the Free World unite!

Why is it so far fetched that Israelis will have this technology before North America? You have no idea how many technologies were invented in R&D facilities located in Israel of some of the biggest companies in the tech industry as well as new startups that were bought by those same companies. One of the biggest problems in Israel is they develop technology, not content. Most of these companies are founded by serial entrepreneurs. Once they sell their company, they go off and start work on their next project, and so on. I'm just glad that I'm alive to see an Israeli company using their technology locally first.
Also, something for you to think about... Once this service rolls out in Israel they are planning to roll it out in other parts of the world. You can think of the Israeli roll out as a giant beta test, one for a global operation.

Listen up scrub it's in my best interest for Americans to develop and control game changing technologies. I GUESS WE SHOULD NOT CONTROL NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY AS WELL!!! what the hell. As leaders of the free world we are responsible to monopolize services like on-live and suck the all the dough we can out of them.

"Listen up scrub it's in my best interest for Americans to develop and control game changing technologies."
Yes it is, but the US doesn't.
"I GUESS WE SHOULD NOT CONTROL NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY AS WELL!!!"
You don't.
