First impressions are everything.

If I saw some of these ads for really violent games without knowing what they were about, I wouldn't let my kids play them.

I mean, ads for the OC totally made me not watch it... and The Hills... TOTALLY.

If I saw some of these ads for really non-violent games without knowing what they were about, I wouldn't let my kids play them.

I mean, ads for the OC totally made disney channel watching sissies watch it... and The Hills... TOTALLY.

To be fair, ads in Europe do tend the cross the line a bit regarding sex and disturbing imagery. I haven't seen much in the way of violence though. Not so much in the sense that I would write a letter to parliament about it, but there have been things I've seen in ads that made me go "Dude, I do not want to see that. I'm at an airport for christ's sake, not 4chan."

Yeah, its kinda the opposite in NA, gratuitous violence is ok as long as there are no nipples or swear words.

To be fair, the lines are drawn in arbitrary places. You're applying the sensibilities of american society in countries where they have no place. If you don't want to see whatever it is we display in public, then stop coming here!

I'm an American, I'm not complaining. Just making a statement about my observations on commercials.

So we should make the ads less informative so when parents see it and think "that's not that bad..." they'll be in for a surprise once the kids start playing.

UK...no. The ad should say what you're paying for. Unless you're McDonald's, in which case I don't want to know what I'm actually paying for.

You can only fit so much in 30 seconds. The 'information' you're looking for is the rating of the game, and if you're a good parent, taking more than 30 seconds out of the day to sit and play the game with your kid. Or, even just spectate. My parents played Zelda with me all the time.

gam_kaneandlynchstab_580-copy.jpg makes me wonder if Joystiq recently hired a former Destructoid graphic designer.

No, I'm not applying American sensibility, I'm applying my own. Take the bug out of your ass. There is some stuff I just don't like to see. I'm not saying it should be banned, I don't give that much of a shit; but it does turn me off the product. And it doesn't surprise me if people go "hmm, maybe people don't like to see some dude's face melting or giraffes with tits in ads.". Don't give me that "love it it leave it" bullshit, we get enough of that here. It's just crappy advertising, nothing worth getting patriotic about.

yeah, that as meant for Lov's reply to me. When you answer through the email alert it makes a new post instead of replying to the quote tree staring you in the face. That's a bit dumb.

FYI, the UK airs lots of adverts that simulate violence and death.
SIMULATE, this isn't fantasy death like in video games, these are commercials where people die from car accidents, get abused, etc.

These get annoying as hell.
