Top five best sellers for 2009 tracked for each console

Finding it hard to get interested in the June NPDs? Perhaps a visual aide from the folks at Gamasutra will help boost your enthusiasm. They've compiled the sales figures from all of 2009's NPD charts to find the top five best-selling games of the year thus far on each of the three home consoles.

The big winner so far on the PS3 is Killzone 2, trailed closely by Resident Evil 5. On the 360, Resident Evil 5 is currently in the lead, followed by a surprising contender -- UFC 2009: Undisputed. The Wii's current leader is -- who'd have thunk it? -- Wii Fit, followed by Wii Play. For the full five for each platform, check out Gamasutra's writeup.

Honestly, did you have to make that comment? Now all the stupid fanboys (Both Sony and Microsoft) come and make their stupid little arguments about how they're the best.

It's great that all the consoles are doing so well. Now STFU and let it go.

All of these sales numbers are meaningless! Once Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 come out on PC you will see what true sales figures look like. So now all of you can stop arguing over how non-impressive the sales numbers of Killzone 2 are.

As for Resident Evil 5 being the overall biggest seller across platforms that comes as no surprise. Resident Evil is a strong franchise that had little competition from another strong franchise. If it had come out against something like GTA, or Metal Gear, or Gear of War, then we would see how it would really perform against the competition.

Still though, it is entertaining that the best selling 360 game is a game that you can get on the PS3. So if you only own a PS3, then you don't miss out. I Own both, so I don't miss out on anything, except when my 360 craps out on me, then no Gears 2....

In that case, Sony is in really awful trouble. Because they're in third place in the console wars. A distant third place, and the trend is getting worse for them.

They're not selling enough consoles, and their developers are not selling enough titles.

So yeah, you're right, it's total numbers that matter. And the numbers for the PS3 suck.

I like my PS3, mostly as a media player. But I have a VERY hard time recommending the console to anyone else at its current high price. Sony need to drop the price, they need to stop coddling favoured in-house developers with massive budgets, and they need to make PS3 development cheaper and easier.

short answer: no.

Retail sales figures are not profits, any more than theatrical box office receipts are profits.

1 million sales for Killzone 2 -- a figure it hasn't even reached -- is very poor for a game with such a massive development cost and such a huge marketing/hype campaign.

You can't simply multiply 750K sales by the retail price and arrive at some gross profitability figure. The real profit-per-unit figure is a small fraction of retail pricing.

Basically, Killzone 2 has failed as a product, whatever merits it may have as a game. It has yet to recoup anywhere near its REAL costs, and may well never do so. Perhaps more importantly for Sony, it has failed to move PS3 units. And that was precisely the reason that Sony bought GG. KZ2 was designed to be a system seller. The answer to Halo. Clearly, by any metric you wish to use, it has failed to do this.

KZ2 already sold over 1 million and plus we havent gotten to the holiday season yet where its expected to sell more but anyways the game cost $60 mil, which by my math it has already made profit especially after all the DLC....but im done talking sales instead im going to go play the Damn game.

one would have to have been living under a rock (or, perhaps, in the delusional world that only US sales matter) not to have known that worldwide RE5 sales were neck and neck for both systems. Capcom announced this not long ago. as for KZ2, well, Sony announced about three months ago that the game stood at 1 million.

UFC isn't a surprise to me, but RE5 being #1 is kind of a shock. I really, really hated it.

I haven't played it, but if any games controls are hurting your nether regions, you're doing something wrong.

You probably haven't played Re4 then dude, because if you had, then you would know.

Also, don't forget the atmosphere or lack there of. RE is a series that needs atmosphere to breathe and when you take that away...

No, I've played every main-series RE. I played RE4 to the point where Mercenaries just wasn't fun anymore. I loved it.

I still don't understand. RE5 is a more arcadey version of RE4.

Maybe you didn't find it scary? Seeing as how RE hasn't been scary since the second, I don't really see a problem.

No I didn't expect to be scared. I didn't like the inventory system for one. I know Leon's magic suit case annoyed people because you had to pause but I liked it. I've mentioned I did not like the setting at all. I know some people loved the co-op and I'll admit it is tight but sometimes you just want to play an action adventure game with no one around and god Sheva and Chris are annoying. Even with his backstreet boys esque haircut, Leon is my boy! I also really liked the merchant.

I can still play re4 now and it's fun and I just don't get the same replayable satisfaction from 5.

Xbox and Wii owners sure do buy a lot of games.. Or at least they all buy the same games.

I always felt the biggest pussy deflector out was the 360.

Case in point: Everyone I know that owns only a 360, is single. They also play the shit like 7 hours a day. Probably contributing to the lack of pussy.

Given the disappointingly massive dropoff in sales after launch for Killzone 2, one can only hope Uncharted 2 can really pick up the PS3's game-selling fortunes Stateside before the year is up. There's still just under half a year to go, thankfully.

I bet Killzone 2 is doing blindingly well in Europe though...

Sony is doing just fine, people. They will have outsold the Gamecube and Xbox's 5 and 4 year tallies in just three years...I fail to see how this means that Sony will die or something.

I'd rather have Sony be willing to spend money on game development than have them be like Microsoft, who killed ACES, Ensemble, practically destroyed Rare, and pissed away Bungie. Let's not forget all the totally awesome titles 'Wingnut Interactive' has produced...oh, wait.

Top 5 PS3 games = very nice, AAA games, great exclusives, great multiplats

I'm honestly surprised that none of the CoDs are in the top two on either console...
And I thought the PS3 would be MGS at no. 1.
And I'm assuming that the picture on the left is of Killzone 2? If it is, I don't mean to troll, but those graphics aren't as good as I thought they were...

MGS came out June 2008 and sold most of its 3-4 million copies during the 2008 year and would have nothing to do with 2009 figures....

killzone 2 gameplay and cutscene graphics played on an HDTV are outstanding and one of the best for a shooter today if you have played the game.

and most of the 10+ million COD copies were sold between nov-dec last year i assume.

Wow Joystiq really should of listed all the games. Look at the whole main article that is linked to in the post, and you'll see that CoD WaW is on the top 5 list for the 360.

Killzone 2 kinda surprised me, considering the general sentiments from my 'community'.
Another true story: "I kinda want to get Killzone 2, but I heard it sucks." "Where did you hear that?" "Uuuh... I'm getting RE5."

maybe they should stop including the wii in these sales roundups - fitness gimmicks are completely different to computer games.
Maybe they could give them a seperate sales category - I'd much rather hear how well zelda or madworld is selling in comparison.

well, zelda is probably selling only small amounts now because it's years old. (It sold well when it came out, though.)

killzone is the only game on the ps3 list i've bought. i've been buying older games, not used, and i'm waiting for a few price drops.

Killzone 2 released in late Feb has sold about 700k in u.s., but UFC released in May has already sold 500k on the PS3. Killzone has 2 extra months out and it only sold 200k more than a multiplatform fighting game, and KZ2 is supposed to be this huge system seller.

Just pointing that out. Plus people should really read the whole artilce that's linked to on the post. The whole 1st page talks about how not one 360 game is an exclusive, but the whole article that is linked to lists Halo Wars in the top 5. Someone points that out and gets downvoted because clearly most people just read Joystiqs caption and the whole artlicle that was the source of this information.

I don't really care, but I mean people if you're gonna say things at least read the whole thing and not just Joystiqs few games it listed from the main article. Joystiq didn't give the whole story, thats why they linked to it so you could read the whole thing.

well duh killzone 2, i mean how long has it been since the ps3 had something good to play? the multiplayer was really good but those controls and stupid spawns that can be placed anywhere even next to other enemy spawns is just stupid, it really encourages reckless gameplay where ppl just spawn and spray and...maybe pray

Wii Fit... drop the "F", and add a "sh"
