Oddly enough, piracy introduced me to Steam. I pirated FEAR 2, and couldn't apply the crack as per usual. And FEAR 2 was 50% off that day, and I had already installed Steam to play multiplayer... Now we're best friends forever, and the heartwarming tale of our adventures can encourage generations of Joystick Commenters.

No joke, I payed money for The Sims 3 to show my support for EA's cutting back on DRM. Even if I'd had no interest in the game I would have bought it just for that.

Yeah, quality service doesn't stop piracy, but it certainly slows it.

I had to have a decent system in order to pirate games. Can't go stealing hardware, that's just silly now right?

If you want your PC game to not be pirated, give it a chat room of any kind that requires server authentication. That's why people play on the PC, because of the mouse and keyboard interface. It certainly isn't the bug/patch/bug/patch routine or the 3 hour installs.

3 hour installs? What the hell are you talking about? The only computer games I've ever played that have had 3 hour install times are games like World of Warcraft or Lord Of The Rings Online, both of which are impossible to pirate.

I used to pirate games. But honestly, buying games on steam is EASIER and much more convenient than downloading them illegally.

Instead of going to the torrent site, finding the game, finding a crack, waiting way too long for it to download, emulating the install cd with a virtual drive, installing the crack, downloading patches, and then if it's an online game not even be able to play with the people who bought the game.

With steam I just click "buy" and everything is delivered to me in the background, constantly over 1mb/s while I go about doing whatever I want including playing other games. No huge install screens that take up my whole screen and don't let me do anything else, no patches, no cracks. Pirating just doesn't make sense when the game is on steam.

> "We don't really worry about piracy,"

Maybe Newell doesn't worry *very much* about piracy, but the fact that Steam includes DRM implies that his company is thinking about it to some degree.

I think that's largely *why* they don't worry about it.

If Newell actually cared about the safety of his company, then he would worry about piracy even if they were extremely protected from it. It's called being over-protective, and in this case, that's a good thing.

Now, I think it's time Newell did a little thing I like to call...The Safety Dance.
