This data is misleading. Checked out the article on Gamasutra and the figures being looked at are dollar amounts, not unit sales. It makes sense that dollar amounts would be down year over year once many of the players have invested money in the plastic instruments used to play the games. Example: If I spent $170 at retail in 2007 when Rock Band came out, but only $60 at retail the year "Rock Band 2" came out, that would indicate a decline of nearly 60 percent, when measured by dollars. But if I'm buying each game in the series, does that indicate the series is a "fad" that's going away?

Similarly, you can now buy Rock Band 2: Special Edition for $140, rather than $170. To keep sales figures from sliding, they'd have to sell more units.

I'm not saying the guitar/band genre isn't a fad. It's just that it should be measured by unit sales rather than dollar volume. Presumably we're not all plunking down money for new plastic instruments every time one of these games comes out.

I would agree with this... IF, like everything else Bemani, Konami didn't fucking retardedly horde it in one region than piss themselves in grief when SOMEONE else decided to do their job for them.

I mean I loves me some Beatmania, but the fact that I had to spend $90 per controller and own a Japanese PS2 to play the series that started the Bemani franchise is ridiculous. And expect plenty more pouting from Konami when Scratch and DJ Hero prove this musical franchise could work in the states if they didn't half-ass any localized efforts.

Also, Gitaroo Man is the greatest rhythm game ever made....

How does DLC affect this? I'd still play DDR pretty often if I didn't have to hook up my PS2 to do it.

When I asked how DLC affects this, I know this graph is for retail sales. I'm wondering if Rock Band's DLC sales are steady enough that it's making up the difference from retail sales dropping.

DLC means that this article is completely irrelevant to Rock Band.

Guitar Hero has pursued a SKU-driven strategy, so retail sales paint an accurate picture of how that franchise is doing.

Rock Band has pursued a DLC-driven strategy. DLC is cheaper to produce than SKU's, and Harmonix has been very successful here. They have over 45 million paid downloads, mostly at $2 a pop.

Expect DLC sales to increase once Rock Band Network launches later this year.

Harmonix and MTV are making a fortune on DLC. That will ensure this genre will stay alive much longer. They have taken a better approach than has Activision. That's what happens when they release so much DLC every week. They don't need the new retail sales to be as high.

Heh, I got kinda bored of it after GH2. Now it's just sort of fun to watch from the sidelines as Rock Band and Guitar Hero gnaw at each others' ankles, with no real bias.

After Rockband The Beatles comes out I'm set for life anyways. RBN will mean that we don't ever need another rhythm game, so I'm good.

All these new features I don't give a flying fuck about, since I just care about the music. Triple super duper star power? Yeah.. ok.. whatever.
Now if you'd excuse me, I'm going to make orc babies with a fat Megan Fox, because Sam Raimi told me so on a blog.

There's a difference between putting away the instruments and not buying new games. I'm still going to be playing Rock Band 2 in a few years, but I doubt I'll buy many more full-price retail releases.

Right on, it doesn't seem like EA/Harmonix is milking Rock Band, so when Rock Band 3 does come out in the future I'll probably buy it. Until then, Rock Band 2 it is.

There's no f'ing way I'd buy the 2 or 3 Guitar Hero games a year Activision is crapping out.

As many people have pointed out, looking at the retail side of rhythm games is missing the big picture, and doing so in the middle of the summer when neither game has had a retail release for months is dumb too.

This just in, God of War sales down 10,000% since it's peak...

I do agree that "Play through this setlist, unlock the next setlist, progressively getting harder" is dead, however. There needs to be innovation in the "game" of rhythm games before retail releases pick up again.

Like, I was totally excited for Brutal Legend to incorporate guitar controllers, even though that idea got axed. (ha.)

Who knows, (I know that Activision doesn't.)

Ironically that's one idea that Activision did have - they wanted to turn Brutal Legend into a Guitar Hero game.

Personally I think the ultimate rhythm game is one of two things, and Rock Band 2 is already one of them, it just needs more support from record companies. My second idea is a Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy-esque game, written by someone with a clue, where you follow a guitarist's life story and play different genres of original music depending on the events of the story. If it was done well it'd be great, though perhaps not £40 worth of great.

Eventually they'll have to tone it down, because it's impossible to innovate too far (unless you do something completely off the wall like Wii Music, which was clearly not properly understood), so saturation is naturally going to be much more detrimental.

DDR: 19 SKUs since 2002.

GH: 25 SKUs... since 2005.

uuugh... sigh, I remember the old times, when rhythm games were rather obscure, no one would understand them and only few play them and their logos weren't on shirts and cakes and cereal boxes and soda bottles and boxers everywhere, their brands weren't sponsored by rockstars or famous people, and hell would freeze before one of them would be featured in mainstream media.

But it all will be gone as soon as 2010, I hope.

This is Activision building its own grave, and unfortunately its opened another hole in the ground for Team Harmonix it seems. Expect Harmonix to come out with something in the next couple of years that would teach the player how to play a real instrument while keeping it fun for the casual audience at the same time so they will survive, and expect Activision to release Guitar Hero: Modern Warfare that would pit the player as a first person concert hero who is subcontracted by the CIA to kill Muslims, which will probably spell the demise of Activision but probably not because the hur dur masses love this shit.

Good. Guitar Hero is complete and utter trash.

Maybe Activision can stop peddling this glorified quicktime event genre and make some original games that aren't utterly devoid of gameplay.

As a huge Harmonix fanboy, Activision can go suck a huge cock for destroying a good genre of games that had the potential to revive interest in the music industry. If Rock Band Network takes off and Activision doesn't fuck over the genre any more than it already has, Rock Band will easily have a huge place in music history.

Harmonix are a business. If not releasing a game somewhere was making them worse off, they're doing everything in their power to do the opposite. If there's no way they can make a profit from Australia/New Zealand, then there's no reason they should release it - such is the free market.

Developers are not publishers. Harmonix makes the game, EA publishes it.
Then there's the matter of copyright negotiations. As far as I know, any track in the Rock Band store is available everywhere, isn't it? Clearing all those rights can't be too easy.

There's no reason to assume Harmonix has anything to do with it.
