Happy (belated) 10th birthday, Halo
Hey, Halo! Wow, is it ever good to see you! Listen, we're sorry we missed your birthday yesterday, we were really busy with the Babypirates and that dinosaur-headed robot. We just wanted to say you're 10 years old now, and you're growing up in to a fine young man. ... Anyway, listen to us ramble. The point is ... we think you're old enough to have this: It's your grandfather's pocket knife.
Now don't tell your mom about it and don't go poking your eye out, she would just skin us alive. ... What's that? No, smart alec, we don't know how a knife would puncture the nearly 1,000 pounds of MJOLNIR armor that you're constantly required to wear. Now go get washed up for supper, we're having fettuccine.
[Thanks, Jacob]

I feel old.
10 years already? Sheesh.
Lion.P @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:06AM
agreed - I guess when you think about it, 10 years seems about right but man thinking back to when Halo was released on the xbox just doesn't feel like 10 years. Just made me start trying to figure out how long I've been paying for xbox live O_o
MarkHawk @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:12AM
The first game was released on November 15, 2001 though... Sure production started years before I heard of it but it's only been about 8 years. So you can feel 2 years younger.
Access Granted @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:15AM
Seems more like 8 years to me.
Nerdy Desi @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:18AM
Halo was announced back on July 21st, 1999 by Bill Gates at the Macworld expo and the game was announced for PC and Mac before being developed for Xbox and released November 2001.
netgem21 @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:21AM
@Nerdy Desi - Steve Jobs actually, CEO of Apple, not Microsoft.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:23AM
And when it was announced, it was slated to only go to the Mac.

I'm glad I've lived long enough to celebrate ten years of absolute shite.
Rhamsey @ Jul 22nd 2009 10:58AM
Yeah, its fucking terrible, nothing compared to the game you created, that has also sold millions, and is known by almost every gamer.
MarkHawk @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:14AM
Are you kidding me? Phizzy's game "Halo Band: Revenege of the Crystal Skull" was amazing. Even Yahtzee loved it.
Captain Planet @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:14AM
You're Islamic? Assalaamu 'alaykum my brotha!

Phizzy @ Jul 22nd 2009 6:30PM
Wow, you guys have played my games?! Cool! Did you prefer Cannon Belly Man or Cucumber Toaster Boy?
vidGuy @ Jul 22nd 2009 10:55AM
Wow, can't believe it's been that long. Halo was definitely the center of attention at gaming parties my freshman year of college. My school had one campus-wide lan, so there were always ten or fifteen games going on. Good times.
Temidien @ Jul 22nd 2009 10:56AM
Same here. First time i drank was freshman year at a Beer-lo party. Good times...
Neuromancer @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:06AM
Back in my day we had to play with Beer Bond (AKA Beerdeneye). It was the best we had at the time. You guys don't know how good you had it.
Temidien @ Jul 22nd 2009 10:55AM
After watching that vid all I want to do is tell my boss I'm sick and run home and play. Damn you Bungie!!!
Rhamsey @ Jul 22nd 2009 10:55AM
Before this game, i wasnt a huge first person shooter fan. sure i loved golden eye, but nothing like the hours i put in with friends with CE. And I've spent a lot of time playing halo, either in groups of friends on the couch, or with friends over xbox live. Cant wait till ODST. And red vs blue is the best thing to come from halo.
bub @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:07AM
god i hate halo so much!!!!!!
Azerael @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:23AM
It's a videogame.
Seriously.
Go outside and enjoy your life. Laugh at a joke. Smell some flowers. Kiss a girl.
You'll feel so much better, I promise.
Cody @ Jul 22nd 2009 12:04PM
"Kiss a girl."
You're talking a foreign language to some of these clowns on here.

Even though I'm not a huge fan of the game, I gotta recognize that it's significantly impacted gaming as we know it. I also think Bungie is extremely talented for putting out quality and polished code. Happy B-day Halo and nice job Bungie!

BoBoTheChimp @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:01AM
Wait..what? I thought it came out in 2001?
JXCgunrunna @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:07AM
Yea thats what I thought too. who knew...
indyjones5469 @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:12AM
Epic fail for the poster. It says "birthday" in the title and the game was "born" in 2001. Although it was announced in 1999, we as humans do not celebrate the day of "conception".
whookid @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:12AM
10 years since the first game was announced.. so kind of 10 years old.
samfish (uses the Joystiq Comment-Kill filter!) @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:20AM
It's not 10 years old.
When people celebrated Ocarina of Time's10th anniversary last year, it was done on the day it was released.
Counting a game as being 10 years old from the day it was announced is new and a double standard.
...although there are no shortage of those when to comes to MS coverage sometimes, it feels like :\
Van Faulk @ Jul 22nd 2009 11:23AM
indy:
Hey, some of us think that game life begins at conception.
Trickob @ Jul 22nd 2009 7:25PM
you're right, van faulk. many of us believe that game life begins at conception and that's why it is so sad that so many games are cancelled or "aborted."
let's fight to stop video game abortion!
