Wait...

Is this like a new section of the Dashboard for Halo, or like a download thing, like the Netflix Instant Watch thing?

Because if it's the first one, that's ridiculous.

Lol, I think Microsoft should just change the name of the 360 to Xbox Halo. Because it sounds like the first to me.

I'm confused of what to make of this, only because I don't understand what exactly it will be. I don't think Halo is being over saturated as much as Zelda or Mario, but at the rate their going, I'm starting to think so.

Well, lets see what this will be before I make quick generalizations, even though I did already.

While I don't consider myself a Halo fanboy, I enjoy the games very much. I would have to say, out of all the blockbuster franchises out there, the Halo franchise has been managed extremely well by Microsoft and Bungie. Take a look at this list of Halo media:

Tell me one thing on there that made you go, "Ugh, more Halo shoveled down my throat."

I agree that Mario has been whored out way more than necessary, but Halo is approaching the saturation level of the Zelda series. These are estimates, but look here:

Zelda: 15 games in 23 years = 0.652 games/year, or one game every 18 months
Halo: 4 games (+2 coming soon) in 9ish years = 0.667 games/year, or one game every 18 months

@ vidguy

(my post from earlier)

2001 - Halo: Combat Evolved
2004 - Halo 2
2007 - Halo 3
2009 - Halo Wars

4 games in 8 years is not "over saturation". Each game was different and the entire Halo series (Halo 1-3) is part of the same story.

But when we take a game like, oh I don't know, Zelda and see how many games were released in relatively the same time frame (spread across multiple platforms):

2000 - The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
2001 - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
2001 - The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
2002 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
2004 - The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
2004 - The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
2006 - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2007 - The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Yeah, that's not over saturation.

(part 2)

Halo's momentum has always been consistent because, whether or not you want to believe it, has the most loyal fanbase in the history of videogames. Bungie/Microsoft understand this loyalty which is why the Halo franchise has not been reaped to the masses like every other well known franchise (Mario, Zelda, Call of Duty, practically every EA game, Metal Gear, Guitar Hero, Final Fantasy).

Microsoft knows it has a cash cow with the Halo franchise and just as easily could have released Halo Fighter 4 Turbo Solid XX Duty Hero: New Age Combat Ops War but people would get sick of the franchise. Halo is a great franchise with endless possibilities, this foray into the animation/anime world is more of a nod to these loyal fans and nice way of saying, thanks for supporting us, here's some new Halo goodness for you all.

(I'd like to point out that I'm not saying the games I mentioned above are bad, but to show the ratio of Halo games released compared to other well known franchises which is 1:3 on average)

(part 3)

While I don't consider myself a Halo fanboy, I enjoy the games very much. I would have to say, out of all the blockbuster franchises out there, the Halo franchise has been managed extremely well by Microsoft and Bungie. Take a look at this list of Halo media:

No, I'm not a Halo fanboy (I prefer CoD) but Halo is very distinguished from the rest of the shit that is released year after year, sequel after sequel, spin-off after sin-off.

Holy crap, dood! I can't believe you wasted so much thought and time commenting in a video game blog. Sheesh. Go ride a bike.

I think by "over saturation" we can consider the ENORMOUS marketing efforts behind the Halo brand and all it's products (which extends beyond mere video games and books.... ever had a Halo Slurpee?)

Saturation of Halo is in the extensive marketing they are doing, just like Mario.

Remember the Mario cereal, the cartoon, and other things they did with the franchise. Thank God of course they stooped with that and just focused on the gaming aspect, which Halo is at least doing right. But with the Halo anime just announced, books, drinks, etc they seem to be a little over-saturation. All of us complaining about the over saturation, at least me, are just sick of the marketing their doing, which is there of course for advertising, but I like the idea that a franchise becomes a franchise because of the quality of the game, not because their on my favorite drink.

@ ChristmasBeard (douchebag)

So much time? You must be a dolt if you think I spent more than 5 minutes writing up my opinion(s) on a videogame blog. Sorry that I don't come in here with snippy 4-15 word replies hoping to get up-voted çunt nuggets like you.

The enormous marketing you're talking about was obviously with merit. The most successful videogame franchise in the past 2 generations, sells shit loads of copies, sets all kinds of records and you think Microsoft should sit on its thumbs? Microsoft had 2 Halo themed campaigns to help promote the games (Halo 2 and Halo 3). Both games sit at #1 and #2 of highest 1 day sales in the history of videogames. What the hell would you have done differently? Halo toys in Happy Meals? Wow, a fucking slurpee cup and Masterchief on a fucking soda can. OMG, MICROSOFT STOP WITH HAL0Z, ITz EVERYWH3RE I CANT SLE3Pz.

Fucking idiot.

Captain Planet,

Me,personally,I think it's getting over saturated as well. Not because there are tons of games, but because there are Halo titles announced before other announced Halo titles are even out in retail yet. They showed a trailer for some new Halo game right after showing Halo:Reach, which isn't even OUT yet.

That's just the way I feel.

halo is the # 1 exclusive gaming franchise on the 360 and halo 3 has sold more than 2 times the amount of total games than the closest ps3 exclusive game.

i do not feel they are oversaturating the game.. they wait every 2 years or so to release a new halo game, not every year.
they do not re-release the same game over and over like the mario series someone compared halo too.

the problem for sony is that they do not have any game franchise to saturate the market with. nintendo is doing just fine with their franchises.

i do consider EA putting a mass effect game on the iphone as oversaturating though...

wow a halo space on XBL dash? whoa.. so much oversaturation..
whoa a mini-series.. so much saturation... lol..

its really just great things for fans to enjoy, and there seems to be a lot of fans of the halo universe out there.

Sounds like Microsoft is serious about social networking integration for XBL. I'm not into the whole social networking thing but if this catches on, I think it would be brilliant for sport games, MMOs and fighting games over XBL.

MS own the Halo IP, so they're shifting everything relating to Halo from bungie.net over to their own studio.

So now we'll get our Halo stats complete with an advertisement for Zunes. Terrific.
