EA's piracy demo program apparently paid off as Gamasutra reports The Sims 3 sold 820,000 retail copies this June in the US. Digging a little deeper into the numbers, the site believes the game has hit 2.5 million sales globally, which means it may reach analyst projections of 4 million units cha-chinged by year's end.
With vampires, built-in microtransactions, and an inevitable assembly line of expansion packs planned, The Sims 3 has only begun to pour coal into its money train. How does one say "bagiggles of cash" in Simlish?

It's always going to be a problem though. I imagine when most mainstream albums come out, they get the shit pirated out of them almost immediately. Most of the people who pirated probably wouldn't have bought the game if they didn't have the option to torrent.

Except those were console games, and this is PC game with a fairly big set of requirements to play.

True, but I'm sure this game will have huge legs. The Sims 2 game and expansions packs have been selling well for years after they were released. You can't really say the same about many console games, other than some Wii games.

Yes, admittedly, I also remember DQ selling 2Mn in two days when I read this newspiece, and I failed to be impressed.
But as a console gamer, I'm more wrapped around numbers. I mean, between the NPD, VGChartz, GameSpot, IGN, and innumerable other websites (including, of course, Joystiq), I sometimes feel like I'm at a meeting room listening to financial reports. Nonetheless, the benefit, of course, is that I am very well informed regarding success metrics on console games.
On the other hand, I rarely hear about PC sales numbers at all, save for that of the most popular game (Diablo II, Half Life, Crysis, COD4, etc), which, needless to say, make other PC games look bad by comparison. I suppose it doesn't help that any good news of PC games sales (if 800K is good news, I guess) is typically followed by reports of soul crushing piracy numbers.
Ultimately, to get to the point: I really don't know whether 800K is a good sale number for PC games. If it was a console game, I can say right away how bad it is, but with little knowledge of PC game sales, I just can't say for sure.

This isn't even a game, it's a digital doll house.

If you're stuck with a Mac only for gaming, I'd definitely recommend it.
The only caveat is that if you already play the Sims 2 at least occasionally, you may not find it worthwhile enough to purchase. It's not a big enough a departure, IMO. If you haven't played the sims for years though, by all means jump in.

Sold more than Killzone 2. Pretty impressive. But then again there are a lot more PCs.
