Curious about the direction the next entry in the Resident Evil will follow? By the sound of things, so are the franchise's tried-and-true creators. During Capcom's San Diego Comic Con panel, Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi responded to a fan's query about the possibility of a series reboot with a startling answer -- he's apparently playing a long-running game of Blackjack with fellow RE5 producer Masachika Kawata to see who will be in charge of the next Resident Evil title. Seriously.
We're not sure if Takeuchi's response was sincere -- after all, he later explained that "it doesn't appear as though either of us is going to be in charge." Still, we wouldn't be surprised if he was telling the truth. There's certainly precedent for this kind of thing. Remember when Satoru Iwata won the presidency of Nintendo from Hiroshi Yamauchi in a high-stakes Cribbage game?

If it does reboot and continues the action trend, please drop the "Resident Evil" name off of it. Then make the next Resident Evil game, an actual survival horror please

The reboot they talked about was never explicitly rebooting the entire thing à la Doom 3.

I don't care who leads the project, as long as they make it less of an action game and more of a horror game.

Reboot? Seriously, a reboot? Wow, is the RE series even old enough to be rebooted?
Posted: Jul 24th 2009 3:00PM (Unverified) said
Its age is irrelevant. It's popular enough that they aren't going to play stupid with the next entry and know that if they want to keep it popular, they'll have to listen to the fans.
Tomb Raider is the same age as Biohazard, and it had a pretty good reboot not too long ago. I don't see why they shouldn't attempt it here before they drive it even further into the ground (not that RE5 wasn't a fun game).

I think the notion of a reboot is more directed at the story. It's branched off so much that it's lost the claustrophobic, desperation feeling the first few games had. Don't get me wrong, I loved 4 and 5, but I think reboots are healthy. It's kind of like the Ultimate series from Marvel. Same basic premise, but it's another universe, or another telling of the story, so you can change the continuity.

That was just a question from some random person, it doesnt mean the series will be rebooted. The article is about a change of producers, likely because of their sheer unwillingness to improve the games mechanics. I would be surprised if he produced RE6, he made some really bad choices.

You answered your own question. He didnt make the game as good as it could have been because he refused to listen to people. Having bad controls wasnt an accident, he WANTED the game to have bad controls and didnt care what anyone thought. I would not be asking him to make RE6 if I was his boss, I would want to hire someone looking to make all areas of the game as good as possible without coming up with lame excuses like "it wont be as scary if its easy to control"

heh, well I didn't answer my own question. I don't think the majority of the people disliked the controls. i just said that because the biggest complaint (about a game that got an 86 on Metacritic and sold the most units in the franchise) was about the controls. For most it wasn't that big of a deal, so I don't think he was "not listening to people." He was in fact listening to people, because RE4 got such good reviews.
That whole complaint is based on nostalgia. People look back at the old games, then look at the less than scary, more suspenseful current games, and the most noticeable difference is the control scheme. But I don't think those controls would work. The genre has changed too much. People just don't know what else to bitch about.
Now if he is to be accused of not revolutionizing the genre again, as the first and second did, and games like Silent Hill, Dead Space, etc did, then he's guilty of that. But all he was asked to do was continue the series. I just don't see it as being his fault, unless one looks at it as hind sight. "Oh! You should have anticipated people would bitch about it! You should have done something totally risky!"

well if you remember, ubisoft rebooted the prince of persia series last fall after being rebooted just 5 years earlier by sands of time. the original resident evil was released in '95 so id say it's time for a proper update for the franchise (which re4 could have been, had re5 not taken the action to an un-scary level..)
btw what's with everyone hating so much on re4? come on people that game was fucking brilliant and you know it. even if you're too stubborn and in love with the old tank controls and fixed camera angles to admit it, you know it. i will give you guys this though, i totally thought re5 was a disappointment and it just didn't feel right at all. but don't drag re4 into this.

Will this reboot include controls that don't suck complete ass? Like, you know, being able to move while aiming? I mean Dead Space had it, why can't RE?

I really dont want them to change the controls ... although i doubt it matters to Capcom they've already lost half the RE fan-base with the transition from RE3 to RE4 and if they are going to change the controls they'll lose the other half of there fan base along with me ...
i love the unique feel of RE4+5 it sets it apart from other TPS which feel much to similar, RE4+5 control scheme added a layer of strategy that u couldnt get from any other game... at first yes it is frusturating but once u get the handle of it you learn to appreciate it ... its not for everyone but alot of people (Me and my friends atleast) love it

A reboot would be nice. I liked resident 5, but it got real old, real fast.

You know the problem wasn't that there was too much action (IMHO), it was the fact that there was ... no horror at all.
if there was a decent amount of horror in the game (any kind ... like creepy our pop out of the closet horror) then RE5 would have 1+'d RE4.

I'll call your "less action" and raise you "much less daylight."
Why'd they go with sun-bleached desert anyways? Wasn't it next-gen lighting made it possible or something like that? IMHO, even if it hasn't traditionally been a horror game, you can pull off much prettier lighting effects in the twilight hours.

Whatever they do will be good. No aiming while moving sucked, but imho there hasn't been a bad RE game yet... Aside from the online ones on PS2.

Im not surprised if they get rid of some of the top people in charge of RE5. Theyre stubbornness probably cost them theyre jobs, theres no excuse for it.

It's the best selling game in the franchise and got pretty great reviews. Why would people lose their jobs? Maybe some people didn't like it because it was more of an action game, but I don't think those in charge would lose their jobs because of a couple fanboys bitching and moaning.

All I'm going to say is that while RE 5 was a fun game it doesn't come close to RE 4 in terms of atmosphere and story. RE 5 felt like it was made with the mindset of a Guitar Hero 'sequel'. Lackluster. Take what works and cash in on it.
I'm not going to sit here and say that RE isn't as good as it used to be, but the RE series is known for being the best at survival horror. RE 4, admittedly, was my first RE game but it still scared the shit out of me even with action elements. I went on to play RE 1 and RE 0 and they only improved my love for the series.
The series doesn't need a reboot. What it needs is a producer that doesn't simply ride on the success of another's ideas. RE 4 was scrapped multiple times until they finally got something that worked. Can the same be said of RE 5? Other than that, Hideki Kamiya needs to get back in the game. He at least knows what he's doing.

i totally agree with you man, re4 was truly amazing and it got me to buy deadly silence and i like fell in love with the whole franchise (welllllll maybe not outbreak..) but i agree, i had such high hopes for re5 and i feel like ive been really disappointed by the lack of soul put into it. it feels like a re4 clone, done worse. re4 had a passion. it had a heart to it. re5 wasnt made with so much care, and finesse. plus re5 didnt scare me one damn time, while re4 practically gave me a heart attack more times than i can remember lol

For all the talk of running shooting, I rarely ever moved while shooting in Dead Space. Sometimes I would walk backwards away from a necromorph while aiming, but that's it.

you know what this is just an idea but how bout we see some of the women working together like ada and jill and claire mabe rebecca they could all have there own game were there break into an unbrella facility filled with zombies n tyrant and lickers n all the monsters were they kick ass and blow shit up wemen in rage are so fucking hot plus i know for a fact this would get everyone intrested in this game but the plot would be very dark (no prissy barnie type shit) with the girls breaking in to a facilty not know it was coverd with monsters and creatures and the plubic enemie number 1 wesker and they could kick the shit out fo him that would be and awsome ass game i think

i was just thinking the same thing a whole game based on the women following them it would be a lot of fun come on.. jill v. and sexy ada and miss claire all together fight slow moving zombies.. would be great!! hmm now for the story plot... they could be in a small town the is very dark and full of lickers zombie dogs and hunters and my favorite TYRANT..... the purpose of the game would be for them to try to escape from the all the evil mind you the game is completely dark mostly horror the could all have diff story lines on how they came to the town and they could end up in one of unbrellas facility whom was still experimenting on bio- weapnons but things went wrong and its up to them to expose unbrella... and find evidance in the facility which is way bigger than the mansion plus the hive in re 1 (which has the zombies and everything i just said in it) they could all be a team working together i think it would be fun with alot of horror a pinch of action but mostly horror i would pay money for that game on every gaming system...

what ever they do with the next RE, for the sake of Jill do not make any more like RE 4 and 5. Detail and graphics aside they both were not horror nor worth the name resident evil. as one said before, we want survival horror not action. original RE controls and camera views that's what made it scary, not seeing whats coming till you get in the next view.
