"Spirits can interact with other players in order to regain their lives...or by ... killing the other player and stealing their life."

Deal breaker right there. If I do play this it will most certainly be offline now.

I read a little further down and it said:

"As the living player, as soon as you’re notified that someone is up to no good in your game, it is advised that you either prepare for battle or try to speed along (particularly if you’re near the region’s end), as you can often kick the invader out simply by getting into a boss fight or passing into another region.

Invading players, be warned: the player you're invading can summon up to two Blue Phantoms to aid them against you, making the prospect of killing them and reviving your physical body nearly impossible."

so:

--You ARE notified
--You can summon help
--This game sounds awesome
--The game sounds awesome

I've been playing this game for quite a while now. While player kills happen they are quite rare to be fair. A lot of players do leave helpful messages and the community seems more interested in promoting the game rather than wanting people to just die etc.
The game is somewhat punishing as is. Also I am playing with an import copy and sure the communities will differ once it comes out in the US.
Also the message system is more helpful. Plus you'd mostly be playing as a corpse rather than alive thanks to the fact that it's a lot cheaper albeit harder to play as a corpse than to be alive esp at the start of the game.

I'm wondering if there will be more challenges for your souls in the U.S. since U.S. players seems to be obsessed with competition (as evidenced by MGO and other FPS games) as opposed to online collaboration.

tmac,

You'll be spending most of your time in the game dead. My first playthrough, I was definitely dead at least 90% of the time, and you can't be invaded by a black phantom (a player killer, essentially) unless you are alive. Therefore, you can still play online, and purposely play 'dead' to avoid being invaded. I hope that reassures you, and doesn't put you off from a great game.

About the actual article, I loved the way online was done. I've played through the game twice now, back to back (which isn't as crazy as it sounds, as once you play through it the first time, you'll be a pro and blow through the areas in a fraction of the time they took originally), and once everything clicked, the game was perfect. I don't think I had or have any real complaints about the game's obviously odd design choices.

It's good... you can obviously defeat the other players spirit, therefore staying alive and destroying there hopes of reanimation... for a short while at least. I think its a great idea.

I'm also willing to bet that it will be more difficult for the spirit player to kill the other player rather than help him. Otherwise, yeah, that could suck to get PK'd when you are minding your own business.

Normally when I hear about an online mode in a game it makes me less interested in the game, but holy crap, that sounds awesome.

After you kill someone (or are killed by someone) you can leave messages for one another at the bloodstain?

*kills a guy*
*scrawls "U GOT PWNED LOLOLOLOL" in the guys blood*

I can see things getting pretty rage-filled and personal in this game.

no...

Blood stains are left where u and others die, examing your own blood stain gives u back your souls (game currency) and examining anothers blood stain with show a spirt reenact their death.

The msgs are not left in the blood stains and you cannot leave one once u've died... you can leave set msgs where ever you want like "Treasure ahead" or "beware of ambush" and things... yes you do get ppl telling u theres "treasure ahead" in the pitfall but there tends to be more msgs saying "beware of the pitfall"

LOL...that would be fun if they did that in the U.S. version. But I think it'd get out of control.

As it-is right now, if you read the blog post, it mentions that it's a template of different messages that you can fill-in instead of just arbitrarily writing whatever you want.

This seems like a really cool idea. It's multiplayer as a story and ambiance more than a critical function.

Rather lame that you can't simply invite someone to your game and have a co-op online play, but you have to wait for them to day and then wait for them to ask to be invited.

The online for this game is brilliant, in my opinion. It's a single player game with the added benefit of community assistance and cooperation - a really unique way of doing online for an RPG without forcing me to play with other people all the damn time to get the most out of the game.

It's important to remember that you (when alive) will have a massive advantage over the black phantom. For one, he'll be missing a fair chunk of his health, an even bigger chunk if he doesn't sacrafice a ring slot. Also, there are a small number of items that help you against black phantoms, such as the graverobber rings, which reduce the distance they can see you from. Ring slots are really important as they give you invaluable improvements. One ring being the regeneration ring from the beatsmen world, which restores health constantly, something thats amazingly useful against black phantoms who use poinson/plague.

Starting co-op is slightly annoying, but when you select an invate text from teh floor, it shows you the details of the players world, including their name, so its not too hard to start a game together. At the end (I wont spoil it) if you make one of two descisions, you get an item that lets you invite black phantoms for a duel, and an amazing spell if you chose the other one.
