Peter Jackson: Halo Chronicles 'no longer happening'
After years of speculation – appearing on our E3 bingo cards for the last two years in a row (2008, 2009) – it looks like we can finally lay to rest questions about Halo Chronicles, the much-ballyhooed partnership between would-be Halo movie producer Peter Jackson and Microsoft Game Studios. When asked about the project following a screening of District 9 – directed by would-be Halo movie director Neill Blomkamp – Jackson told Joystiq, "That Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn't end up happening."
First announced in September of 2006, the project was later revealed to be an "episodic" series in 2007 and confirmed as recently as April of last year, when Microsoft said, "Microsoft Game Studios has been hard at work collaborating with Peter Jackson and Bungie on the development of [a Peter Jackson-helmed Halo project]." Another job listing in August of last year again alluded to continued development of the project. With key hires like Ryan Payton for Microsoft's newly unveiled Halo studio, 343 Industries, we're not sure what all is going on if Halo Chronicles isn't. We've asked Microsoft Game Studios to confirm Jackson's assertion and are hoping there's some sort of miscommunication here. Maybe "no longer happening" is a Kiwi euphemism for "totally happening." No?

I only understand English euphemisms for bad words, not Kiwi euphemisms.
Trunk @ Jul 24th 2009 4:51PM
When's the Halo movie coming out bitches

When's the Halo movie coming out bitches
whylekat @ Jul 24th 2009 4:57PM
Never!! It's a terrible idea.
PR0F3TA @ Jul 24th 2009 5:51PM
wait, what... who down-voted someone who thought the Halo movie was a good idea, because if it was then why is the hell did everything about it get canned
you know whats a good movie idea... Uncharted, and guess what!!!??
Josh @ Jul 24th 2009 6:05PM
Not sure it will now. Blomkamp officially said today that he no longer has any desire to do it.
Jenks @ Jul 24th 2009 4:51PM
If only there were some other upcoming games to satiate my hunger for Halo.
Cj @ Jul 24th 2009 4:53PM
Lame. So whos the movie gonna be handled by? I doubt MS and Bungie want the Halo movie to not exist.
Exemplar @ Jul 24th 2009 4:55PM
Just because we Kiwis live in the opposite hemisphere doesn't mean we're backward.
Sorry boys, but 'no longer happening' means just that.
Hydrophobicfish @ Jul 24th 2009 4:57PM
Now, is that a euphanism too?
SaltyGary @ Jul 24th 2009 4:59PM
Does the water in your toilet flow clockwise after you flush?
Exemplar @ Jul 24th 2009 5:24PM
Nah, that's an urban myth. The Coriolis effect doesn't actually have an effect on the direction the water drains; it's more to do with the angle which the water flows in from the tap/etc.
Duke @ Jul 24th 2009 5:26PM
Urban myth? I heard that when I was in the country, so you must be mistaken!
Exemplar @ Jul 25th 2009 4:19AM
Nope, I shit you not.
Lakail @ Jul 27th 2009 10:27AM
Is that a toilet pun?
Exemplar @ Jul 27th 2009 12:19PM
you betcha, shit for brains.
UltimatePs3FANBOY @ Jul 24th 2009 5:00PM
Meh Halo sucks anyway I couldn't stomach the thought of a street fighter movie-esqe port of a rubbish game
Kizzle @ Jul 24th 2009 5:03PM
::Wayne Campbell voice:: Nice name...NOT.

Neigh Neigh

I now officially hate Peter Jackson. Every project that he started on (Halo Chronicles and the Halo Movie) he just gave up on. And then he acts like he doesn't even care.
David @ Jul 24th 2009 5:14PM
I dont give a crap either
Shadsy @ Jul 24th 2009 5:22PM
Nevermind that, you know, the Chronicles project was hinging on the movie's success, and that fell apart because of studio in-fighting between Fox and Universal. It's not like that Joystiq didn't just post an article saying that.
Mr Khan @ Jul 24th 2009 5:12PM
Would this also be the end of Wingnut Interactive?
MisterSquared @ Jul 24th 2009 5:17PM
They showed on Major's Minute that 343 Studios is helping develop the Halo Anime and Halo Hub.
-Vexx- @ Jul 24th 2009 5:26PM
..........What?
Duke @ Jul 24th 2009 5:28PM
I would like to thank Peter and all the folks at MS for taking this project so seriously, it isn't like we have been hearing rumors of what this game would be for a long time and would expect something more than a incidental mention the game had been trashed. No, its a great idea to hype it and then forget about it.
Shadsy @ Jul 24th 2009 5:37PM
I think they've only ever mentioned it... twice? And then every E3/TGS/whatever other event, every single game site goes "IS IT HALO CHRONICLES?!?" despite it having apparently been dead in the water for years.
Sa1ntPat @ Jul 24th 2009 5:31PM
The less Halo in the world the better.
cafecito @ Jul 24th 2009 5:32PM
Movie based on a game is always a bad idea. So it's all for the better.
seriousam7 @ Jul 24th 2009 5:44PM
Well, the movie would hopefully have been based on the books. And we all know how well Jackson is at making movies based on books.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 24th 2009 5:47PM
If it was based on the games yeah but if it was based on the books it would be awesome.
Captain Planet @ Jul 24th 2009 5:41PM
Neill Blomkamp would have done the franchise justice and with the resources of Peter Jackson's Wingnut Interactive studio, there's no reason for this movie to suck. Just look at the high production values of the shorts on halo3.com.
MisterSquared @ Jul 24th 2009 5:42PM
and apparently, so is your comment.
Manly Mcbeefington (Mr. ESC) @ Jul 24th 2009 5:45PM
Wait so that means the project was canned so instead of making a movie they decided to work on the anime?
In the words of "Maister chef": [sad face]
ChomskyKnows @ Jul 24th 2009 5:47PM
They couldn't figure out how to get an audience to sympathize with a character whose emotions you can't discern since he has no face...In my opinion, the only way to do this would be to unmask Master Chief at many points in the film...
Snowblind @ Jul 24th 2009 5:52PM
It was based on the Fall of Reach, Master Chief didn't wear armour for the majority of that.. But even if they did a movie based on the games, they could simply have it focus on more of the human characters, with the Chief just being the bad ass guy that's there.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 24th 2009 6:53PM
that's actually what blomkamp said chief would end up as if he did the film "the most important supporting character"
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 5:52PM
Yeah, cause a movie about a guy that says nothing the whole time would be interesting to watch, no wonder he gave up on it. Only the fanboys would deny that the movie would end up being trash. I wouldn't want my name on it either.
Snowblind @ Jul 24th 2009 5:53PM
People that know nothing about the series shouldn't be allowed to make comments about it.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 24th 2009 6:52PM
yeah it can be great. Havent you ever seen a silent bob movie?
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 7:04PM
except his silence was funny and he was never the main focus of the movie. Besides jay said everything for him. I do love all those films, except dogma, that one blows hard.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 24th 2009 7:15PM
wow i thought i was the only kevin smith fan that didnt like dogma
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 7:19PM
everyone i know hates dogma. Love all of his films and how they tie into each other. But he really messed up dogma, It was like he was having an off day with that one.
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 5:59PM
You're right. I've never read any of the books nor do i care too. I have played all 3 of the single player campaigns, only to wish i hadn't. The halo story is sorry as hell kinda like the matrix. Would have been better of not knowing how it ends. How many lines does master chief have? Sorry if I don't get off on everything halo.
Snowblind @ Jul 24th 2009 6:05PM
Halo is fun, because it's always obvious when the haters haven't actually played the games :)
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 24th 2009 6:00PM
Augh God this just rips my heart out. I was dying for this thing. The landfall shorts were so epic, and the story of the books and all the little secrets in the games are so great. Fucking dammit. I guess i can only hope either District 9 is wildly successful and MS begs Neil and Pete to make the movie, or the stuart bettie script isnt total shit like GI Joe
ZombiesRPplsToo @ Jul 24th 2009 10:48PM
Yeah, I'm not siding with anyone, but the reply buttons really are broke sometimes.
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 6:14PM
No really it's not. Mp was okay for awhile. mmm_fish_tacos. Look it up on bungie.net. It's fun cause the fanboys like to defend a sorry ass story. Sorry, you can go back to masturbating to master chiefs poster you have above you bed now, silly little fanboy. And really what gives you the right to tell me what I have and haven't played. Sounds just like a fanboy to me. A snow blind fanboy at that.
The Dark Wayne @ Jul 24th 2009 6:51PM
i havent read any of your previous posts, but you'd have a lot more credibility if you could use the reply button. Also
lolpuns
chris @ Jul 24th 2009 6:58PM
The f up part is I did use the reply system maybe i would have more credibility if joystiq work like it should.
