After years of speculation – appearing on our E3 bingo cards for the last two years in a row (2008, 2009) – it looks like we can finally lay to rest questions about Halo Chronicles, the much-ballyhooed partnership between would-be Halo movie producer Peter Jackson and Microsoft Game Studios. When asked about the project following a screening of District 9 – directed by would-be Halo movie director Neill Blomkamp – Jackson told Joystiq, "That Halo project is no longer happening, it sort of collapsed when the movie didn't end up happening."
First announced in September of 2006, the project was later revealed to be an "episodic" series in 2007 and confirmed as recently as April of last year, when Microsoft said, "Microsoft Game Studios has been hard at work collaborating with Peter Jackson and Bungie on the development of [a Peter Jackson-helmed Halo project]." Another job listing in August of last year again alluded to continued development of the project. With key hires like Ryan Payton for Microsoft's newly unveiled Halo studio, 343 Industries, we're not sure what all is going on if Halo Chronicles isn't. We've asked Microsoft Game Studios to confirm Jackson's assertion and are hoping there's some sort of miscommunication here. Maybe "no longer happening" is a Kiwi euphemism for "totally happening." No?

Not sure it will now. Blomkamp officially said today that he no longer has any desire to do it.

Meh Halo sucks anyway I couldn't stomach the thought of a street fighter movie-esqe port of a rubbish game

I now officially hate Peter Jackson. Every project that he started on (Halo Chronicles and the Halo Movie) he just gave up on. And then he acts like he doesn't even care.

I would like to thank Peter and all the folks at MS for taking this project so seriously, it isn't like we have been hearing rumors of what this game would be for a long time and would expect something more than a incidental mention the game had been trashed. No, its a great idea to hype it and then forget about it.

Well, the movie would hopefully have been based on the books. And we all know how well Jackson is at making movies based on books.

Neill Blomkamp would have done the franchise justice and with the resources of Peter Jackson's Wingnut Interactive studio, there's no reason for this movie to suck. Just look at the high production values of the shorts on halo3.com.

They couldn't figure out how to get an audience to sympathize with a character whose emotions you can't discern since he has no face...In my opinion, the only way to do this would be to unmask Master Chief at many points in the film...

It was based on the Fall of Reach, Master Chief didn't wear armour for the majority of that.. But even if they did a movie based on the games, they could simply have it focus on more of the human characters, with the Chief just being the bad ass guy that's there.

Augh God this just rips my heart out. I was dying for this thing. The landfall shorts were so epic, and the story of the books and all the little secrets in the games are so great. Fucking dammit. I guess i can only hope either District 9 is wildly successful and MS begs Neil and Pete to make the movie, or the stuart bettie script isnt total shit like GI Joe
