So much for our Friday night plans to give The Iron Giant the ol' MST3K treatment. Just as we were dimming the lights and pulling our headsets close, the fine print struck: "This can't be watched with a party." As it turns out, certain Netflix Instant Watch videos can't be subjected to the new "Movie Parties" feature, included in the next Xbox Live Dashboard update. Pineapple Express and The Legend of Drunken Master are two additional examples of incompatible movies we stumbled across -- there's no way to tell until you select a movie in your queue -- in our preview of the updated Netflix experience (video after the break). One obvious connection is that all three films are licensed under Netflix's "Starz Play" catalog.
You'll remember that when Instant Watch first launched on Xbox 360 there was a licensing issue that blocked Sony's Columbia Pictures content, though this was eventually resolved. We've reached out to Netlfix and Microsoft for comment on the current issue. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got to find an alternate use for all this popcorn we'd planned to toss about our living room.
Update: A Microsoft spokesperson had this to say: "We are working closely with our partners and studios to deliver Xbox Live Parties for as much content as possible. We offered the Xbox Live Party feature to all content owners, and what's up on the service reflects what the rights holders are comfortable with. We're confident that the community will be pleased with the great selection of Party-enabled content."
Additionally, a Netflix spokesperson further clarified, "We're working with Microsoft and the studios to instantly stream as many movies and TV episodes as possible for Xbox Live parties. Certain content providers don't provide rights for their content to be instantly watched in party mode. We're confident that the community will be pleased with the broad selection of movies and TV episodes that are available to instantly watch in party mode."

I'm sick of seeing so much Xbox/Netflix/Halo news on Joystiq. What's with so much Xbox 360/Halo news lately and barely any interest in PS3 (or Nintendo for that matter)? There's enough things to post about PS3, but you've probably got 2 related posts on each page compared to 10 360 related posts on each page.

I know that Sony is gonna do something for the PS3, but I'm just too lazy or probably just don't care to remember what it is.

Why would give The Iron Giant the MST3K treatment? That movie rules.

Actually, not boring to those of us who own a 360 and are looking forward to seeing and reading about the new dashboard update and features. Maybe if the PS3's interface was at all interesting and filled with content Joystiq would cover that too.
PS3 owner, by the way.

Question (mostly for Canadians/other people without Netflix):
Does the Movie Party option only work for Nexflix videos, or do they also work with videos rented off of the Xbox Marketplace?

Jesus, I hope so. That would suck if you couldn't. I assumed you'd just be able to hide the party but if not...

Short answer: Nope
Long answer: Yep. but your gonna pay! I believe its called PlayOn. There is also Tversity but thats only for streaming content from your pc (not vid sites) And neither of these are integrated on the PS3, so you need your pc on.
Don't worry you ain't missing out on much yet, the selection ain't all that big yet for streaming. Its still a nifty feature if you happen to have a 360 and a Netflix sub.

You don't understand. I'm fully capable of using the Playstation specific section but what I've noticed is they're being slightly biased with the amount of posts they show on the HOME screen. Every post that was made in the xbox section before I said what I said also appeared on the home news page. Whereas when you look at the ps3 page you'll see they've missed out a few posts for that on the home page. For example: they show a post about ugly Halo t shirts but not one about Ratchet and Clank? If you go on other sites like kotaku or QJ, you'll see a more fairer display of information.
I don't care if there's a big event coming up, they can post all they want about it. The fact is they excluded some ps3 news when they didn't need to and that doesn't show well on joystiqs part.

"We're confident that the community will be pleased with the great selection of Party-enabled content." This is just another way of saying: "People are always learning to expect less from us and this is just our way of delivering on that expectation." This is the sort of bullshit that should have been worked out and dealt with LONG ago and if there was no way to handle it then they should have admitted it up front instead of waiting for someone else to discover it.
