Our brief E3 demo of BioWare's upcoming massively-offline RPG Dragon Age: Origins left us fairly concerned. It seemed too much focus had been put on making the game a tawdry simulator for erotic rendezvous -- however, the game's recently released ESRB rating has assuaged our fears somewhat. According to the listing, the game features no nudity -- save for a pair of female demon breasts, which clearly don't count.
While you can still shack up with your traveling cohorts, it appears any and all sweet love-making will take place off-screen. That's sorta classy, we guess -- though said class is somewhat canceled out by a brothel featured in the game that lets you hook up with "a woman, a man, a transsexual, or an animal." We're fairly certain that even implied in-game bestiality is enough to make it on Fox News for a week or two. Classiness rebuked!

Even though I find the idea of simulated sex scenes in video games kind of sad in only that seems to appeal to the stereotype that we gamers are virgins or sex hounds or whatever(not including Mass Effect in this), I find your first -even- more sadder....and annoying.

Well obviously demonic breasts have eyes for nipples, scales and spikes sticking out of every bit of rough, hardened flesh, and are poisonous to the touch or even glance.
And obviously the animal thing implies two things.
THERE WILL BE CATGIRLS!
or
We can turn into an animal, or create an animal, and then procreate with other animals.

The sad reality is that in an age where R rated movies can have screwing (sans naughty bits), we are still at a stage in video games where the mere sight of a tit sends the media and parent groups into a frenzy. Hell, they don't even need to see the tit, just the mere rumor that a game *might* have tits (or hardcore lesbian alien sex, as was rumored in Mass Effect) is enough to bring out the "experts" that are quick to condone something they've never played or even seen.
Cutting to a black screen with moaning is a cop out.

What's the point of including a sex scene in a video game? Really, there is no valid argument other than to push the boundaries and be the "first." I can understand that people have a relationship and are attracted to each other without watching them unclothe themselves and have some fun. Yes, it is a "mature" game, but keep it off-screen.

Yet Hollywood puts in countless T and A just to draw in crowds of 15 year old boys. Sex sells. Seen a watch commercial lately?

I think the only game to show a sex scene..."in a good light" was Mass Effect as it was part of the story and the character's ever evolving relationships.
But having it as a minigame, is kind of fucking retarded. We have Porn for that.

To be fair, I think 1983's "Custer's Revenge" for the Atari 2600 has them beat by a fair bit on the claim to "first". Overall, I think sex can have a place in any sort of story medium, be it a book, movie, or videogame... but 99 times out of a 100 when it comes to videogames, it's just being forced in there with a crowbar. Er, the sex scene, I mean.
Give it a few decades of trial and error.

Yes, you know, because sex isn’t an important and normal part of a human’s life, and should be shunned and never be talked about, or seen.
Seriously, unless you want video games to be only for kids, video games should be able to tell serious stories about serious topics. If you get offended by a 3D boob, well… grow up, or something.
@freaparn: well, that is true for most movies, too :).

I'm sorry, but I'd say eating is more natural than sex, as is breathing, defecating, and all manner of other bodily activities. You can live without having sex. That aside, it is also one of the most personal activities which one can partake in a relationship, and to show it in a video game in the form of bestiality and prostitution hardly does the genre any good. Quite frankly, its embarrassing that they think this is what it takes to sell a game. I'm sure it will improve everyones respect of a genre which many already believe corrupts minds and should be enjoyed by children.

Right, because all those other things that don't live up to your personal standards of a sexual relationship never happen in real life.

That's a little disappointing. I mean im not asking for some hardcore digital porn, but what's wrong with nudity? When the whole idea of the game is a realistic, visceral fantasy world why cant we have sex scenes if they fit well within the context of the game? I mean FFS The Lost and Damned got away with full frontal cock that really, was only there for the point of having cock.

You can ask the question "what's the point in putting a sex scene in this game?"
or you can ask the question "what's the point in not putting a sex scene in this game?"
Knee-jerk reaction that it's not necessary is a bad argument. There are a lot of things in books and movies and art that aren't necessary, You could probably do everything with androgynous sock-puppets but I think it's obvious to everyone here that something would be lost in the translation of Lolita to sock-puppets.
At the same time we exist in a society where these producers in hollywood and all the video-game devs and pubs are trying to sell a product so they're definitely not above utilizing the titillation factor to drive ticket/game/product sales.
So what do you do? I think the last thing to do is engage in some form of moral outcry over sexual content and situations. Despite what Kattleox might think sex is at least as natural as eating and breathing, without sex neither he nor I would be here nor would there be anyone else to read what I am saying. I think that rather than that people ought to foster consciousness regarding their consumption habits. They ought to ask the question why am I buying this? If the answer is 'because it has hawt sex' well... there you go.
Furthermore in the creation of what is supposed to be a grim and bloody world the existence and use of a whorehouse, a brothel, a prostitute, seems perfectly natural. It would in fact, in my opinion, be unnatural in such a world to not have that very venue. I mean, the origin story for the city elf contains at the very least a reference to rape and yet you intend to argue that it is out of line for there to be a brothel? It's a world of grotesque murder and brutal racism and dark imaginings but you would like the devs to just not include the bits that make you squeamish?

No nudity? I sense a first week mod coming on for the PC version....
If I can make a Brotherhood of Steel orgy or hot ghoul on prostitute action in Fallout 3 I can do it in this game too!

True, but the nudity was brief, and the minigame was offscreen.

While the mini game was offscreen, I just played the Sisters of Fate battles about an hour ago, and I wouldn't really call the nudity there brief. Two of the sisters had breasts showing throughout the entire fight, which took me around a half an hour for all three. YMMV, but I really can't see it taking anyone less than 15 minutes.
