Gears of War director passing on The Rock due to 'Doom connection'

It was a pretty good movie.

These guys are fucktarded, having the rock in your movie is NOT a bad thing.

Besides, most of the kids that're playing Gears these days didn't see the Doom movie nor have they played that particular ancient FPS.

I thought Doom could have been a lot better... but it was mostly poor directing than anything.

Well, the doom 3 storyline was garbage from the get-go, so getting it wrong wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I saw it once on TV, and it wasn't the terrible movie that people seem to make it out to be. There's plenty of shittier movies made from video games. I think Doom happens to be one of the better ones.

The movie wasn't based on Doom 3, it was "based" on the IP in general. Even so, the plot of Doom 3 (which is basically just a rehash of Doom 1) was better than the movie's, which wasn't remotely related to anything Doom is about. They made it about genetic mutants, spawned from genetic experiments, which made it more like Resident Evil than Doom. There wasn't a single mention that these were demons from hell, invading Earth through a portal opened during teleportation experiments. Any way you look at it, the real Doom story is way more epic.

The Ro- sorry, Dwayne, is an alright actor, he's better in parts that are more satirical versions of the action hero, like in Get Smart. I can totally understand why they wouldn't want him in a more serious role, and why they wouldn't want anyone to draw a line between the Gears and Doom movies.

Doom 3's story wasn't that good, you're right, which makes it even more sad that the movie couldn't get it right. It is so simple and easy to translate into a film it's hard to imagine how they fucked it up. But they did. I would rant further but WiredKnight nailed it.

And yeah, Doom pretty much sucked, the Rock has grown into a pretty lame actor too, keep him out of the movie. On second thought... Gears has turned into a pretty lame game with a horrible story, so maybe The Rock is the perfect choice.

here i think you are wrong, the rock has proved many times that he can act, you can love him or hate him but i think he is the best wrestler turned to actor so far, he might not be oscar material but at the end he does act in a good level, specially for an action star.

now this is true too, gears is a game with a pretty simple story, no need to do a lot but to make huge explosions and big destruction, so they don´t really need top actors for this, as i said i think that what they need is more wrestlers for characters, batista and brock lesnar already look like they were born in the gears universe, and for a movie that is not going to be a best screenplay nominee i think they are perfect.

He may be muscular by huamn standards but he still has a way to go to reach gears of war standards.

Actually he isn't all that muscular anymore. He's lost like 60lbs of muscle and is pretty trim right now due to him trying to get out of the action flick business and broaden his horizons (hence all the kiddie and comedy movies lately).

I mean, he's not frail by any means, but he's not built like he was back in "The Scorpion King" and "The Rundown" days.

It's still appealing to the same audience. A lot of gamers are the type of people that like to see things like ninjas and obstacles. They're trying to appeal to same audience and give it variety.

Before you know it, Comedy Central will have shows that tug at the heart strings and make no attempt to be funny. The first gaming tv channel I ever came across was Gameplay HD and it was awesome. Until the unfortunate collapse of VOOM. Then I found G4 and while it was cool at first, it started becoming more about the lulz and less about the games.

fuck G4! i miss TechTV. that was the most awesome nerd channel ever. even though they are technically one in the same (merged and TechTV programs were dissolved), TechTV embraced the nerd, G4 tries to be MTV.

It's nice that he's still got built in fanboys from his soap opera days, but he's not a terribly good actor.

Don't get me wrong, he's very enjoyable and oozes charisma, and he's certainly matured from the days of idiotic catchphrases and Vince McMahon, but he still mugs constantly. He's had few roles that don't call for constant mugging and those have been the times that he's been least successful.

He needs to stick with the less serious roles. He's excellent at them. He's not very good at roles that require gravity and restraint. That would make him a terrible Marcus or Dom. Those characters would force him to hide the source of his charisma.
