In the old American West, emigrants traveling in wagon trains through the plains would pass around the unenviable task of cooking for the group. Following in that grand tradition, the Joystiq staffers force each other to take turns writing stories about how Dragon Quest IX has sold several or perhaps even many severals of copies.
In this case, the magic number is 3.2 million, as reported by Famitsu. While it's still 1.8 million short of the 5 million Square Enix hopes to ship, it's, you know, not bad.

I believe God is a small, oddly colored DS cartridge.

Say what you will about stale JRPGs, Dragon Quest will always be an exception. It's refreshing that the franchise that started it all has managed to avoid the unnecessary micromanagement JRPGs have become infamous for in the past decade. Kudos to Armor Project and Level 5 on another brilliant entry. I'm almost anxious to hear news of DQX now!

DQ and refreshing do not belong together. 8 for ps2 was one of the most boring games i've ever played, and that was before I hated jrpgs and at that point had never played a wrpg.

Mother 3 is the only game I've ever stood in line for. Bloody brilliant game, I'd love a localized version! And you are right, it is among the very few JRPGs that hasn't cone completely crazy with complicated subsystems.
I love WRPGs though. I grew up with an Apple ][, so they were my bread and butter until we got a Mega Drive and SNES. So the micromanagement stuff doesn't bother me there... But that's what I always loved about JRPGs, that they were different. Dragon Quest is the only series I can really count on to live up to the JRPGs I loved when I was younger, the rest mostly fail to really capture anything for me (I still enjoy playing JRPGs though - loved Blue Dragon, which wasn't too far from the traditional DQ formula).

Except that this is actually the first DQ to get a perfect score from them.
