I Am Alive, but my pal Ghost Recon and I won't arrive until April 2010 (at least)

My eager and regularly disappointed followers,

I am saddened to announce that I, your infrequently detailed yet conceptually interesting first-person survival game, have yet again been rendered tardy in my arrival. Though uncertainty has clouded my being since the day of my first exposure to the harsh and unnecessarily snarky world, know that I Am Alive and in the care of Ubisoft until the beginning of the 2010 fiscal year. Please expect me at some time between April 2010 and March 2011.

Oh, and if you don't mind, I'm bringing my shy friend along -- just call him Ghost Recon 4 for now. I'm sure you'll find his company just as exciting, even if I leave the room and create one of those awkward friend-of-a-friend silences. Is it weird that I'm worried that you'll like him more than you'll like me?

What the hell is going on around here? Are all the developers taking extended vacations or something? looking surfing the internet a little too much? neglecting their responsibility to deadlines? And then they wonder why they have to sell 100 million units to just break even.

Obviously: they've heard people saying they hate the Christmas crunch, they want to oblige, but they can't get the game out faster. So, they delay it.

Plus, it's the publishers that set the dates, not the developers. Most of the time, developers have to kick it into overdrive at the end of the development period to make the publisher's release dates. Some are shipped before they are ready, likely due to contracts that the businessmen in the publishing company doesn't want to budge on. Think Socom: Confrontation. Riddled with bugs when it first came out.

The ultimate example is a PC game from the late 90's, some paintball game, literally shipped with no enemy AI. The enemy AI had to be patched in afterwards. Talk about poor business in a publishing house. You can't blame that kind of nonsense on the developers all the time.

And this matters, because developers read these comments. All te time. Really.

If you think a pinball game with no enemy AI is bad you seriously need to look up Big Rigs on YouTube - a game so unfinished I could litterally do better given a month or so.

Economy perhaps?

Developers could be playing the waiting game, spend a bit more time polishing things up, and waiting for the economy to start turning around so that their sales will be better. There's far less disposable income these days, so, when you have plenty of huge hits (or assumed to be) coming out (Halo 3 ODST, MW2, et al.) they realize that people are not going to go out and buy 3, 4, 5 games at a time, which means that the big hits will be, well, the big hits, and the games lower on people's list will be passed up.

If they have the time, and money, to hold off releases, it sucks from the stand point that we won't get to play them soon, but hopefully it will give them some more time to clean things up, and when they do release it, get a good hunk of money to continue making good games.

I've never met a 20lb gorilla, but considering he weighs as much as a Chihuahua, I'm not too concerned. Now a 2,000lb (!) gorilla, that would make me delay a game.
