Video games are totally cool, right? The Entertainment Consumers Association thinks so, and wants you to let the US President know how you feel about video games and their effect on your life, via an email form on its website. Specifically, the folks at the ECA want you to "point out some ways that video games have empowered and educated you." Like that time you were empowered by GTA IV to rob someone, right? (That's a joke, Mr. Thompson.) The political lobbying group is of course responding to the continuing message from President Obama during speeches to "put the video games away."
While we're sure Mr. President would love to read all about how World of Warcraft taught you about time (mis)management or how Drop7 makes you see things in groups of seven or less everywhere you go (is that just us?), we're thinking the "intellectual stimulation" and "problem solving" routes might be a bit more advantageous.
[Thanks, Jack!]

i think he has an idea already about how cool games are. he just wants kids to do homework work and get enough sleep.

That right
He is always talking about the education of the children every time he mentions video games, the guy just wants to better the country but of course we have to judge him for every little thing he does,
Also dont send him any emails, because first he doesn't care and second he has other problems to deal with (Afghanistan, the economy, healthcare), you know which are much more bigger than this video game dilemma

Why do people freak out when someone like Hillary Clinton or Jack Thompson says something negative about video games, but Obama gets a pass?
On second thought, I suppose Obama doesn't display the abject ignorance of games that Clinton or Thompson do.

Plus Obama isn't saying videogames are always bad, or lead to violence. He's not about censoring games or limiting them in any way. He is promoting a more healthy, balanced lifestyle. He's saying put down the xbox controller, not throw it away.

He's a Democrat; is anyone really surprised that he isn't a friend of videogames and the right to freedom of expression? Really? People are surprised.

Wow, what a generalizing, idiotic comment. Hillary Clinton is hardly representative of the Democratic party, and Joe Lieberman is practically Republican. I don't know a single democrat who likes him.
Obama is hardly anti-videogames. The worst thing he's said about them is that kids should do their homework and exercise instead. Further, he was the first presidential candidate to advertise within videogame adspace. He owns a Wii which he enjoys... I mean, what more do you need?
Finally, the idea that Democrats don't support freedom of expression is about the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I just don't even know how to respond to that, since it's always Republicans wanting to pass flag-burning laws and gay marriage bans.
Next time why don't you think about things before you type them.

Well I learned from MadWorld that our society craves violent entertaiment, craving for a glance of horrific violence, and that politicians and the like are greedy, evil bastards.
Also, that its really fun and useful in killing nameless zombies by catapulting them to the Moon.

When the zombie invasion hits, Obama will sure be happy that most of us gamers already know what to to:
1. Fling 'em at the moon
2. Sawed off shotgun to the head - It's super effective!
3. Herd them into a mall and throw televisions at them

While I appreciate that President Obama is simply trying to get parents to instill in their children the idea to put their studies first (which I believe is something we can all agree is a good thing), the way he seems to put it in his speeches seems like he's somewhat blaming video games for under-achievement. It is entirely possible for someone to be a gamer and keep up with their academics.
And you're welcome Mr. Ben Gilbert, and the rest of Joystiq. I do enjoy contributing to the site, even if it's only through comments and the occasional sending of a tip.

What a load of crap. Should Gamers become as anal about casual references to video games as PETA gets worked up about any implication of animal abuse? (Rescue Shelter Boys, anyone?) It's a bit extreme to get defensive on behalf of all video gamers for such a trivial comment like moderating your child's use of their favourite toy; Obama just happened to use the example of an Xbox, a popular video gaming console. Whoop-de-doo. Microsoft is probably happy to get the mention.

Daft young girl to you!
And yes. I read what Obama said, and it seems absurd that the ECA (or anyone) would suddenly jump to the defense of video games. What on earth for? It was a lighthearted comment that implied nothing about video games in particular having a negative impact on a child's life, it was only an example of a popular form of entertainment. The point is - "everything in moderation". No matter what a parent allows their child to be doing in their spare time, whether it be playing a video game console, social networking on the computer, or being out of house hanging out with friends late at night, there should be some limits.

I agree that we shouldn't get up in arms about every ignorant mention of video games, but PETA is a borderline terrorist organization. And nice icon Jack, loved that TWEWY, it had one of my favorite combat systems on the DS.

My apologies. Should have payed better attention to the spelling of your name, young miss.
Agreed. Everything should be taken with moderation. However, this was hardly a passing comment. He's continually used video games a metaphor for under-achievement. These are just a few of the instances he's made such inferences:
http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/26/once-again-obama-refers-video-games-something-set-aside-greater-good
http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/15/obama-names-video-games-health-concern-speech-ama
http://www.gamepolitics.com/2009/06/12/obama-chinese-amp-indians-kids-play-fewer-video-games-quotcoming-us-hardquot
While he's not straight out demonizing our hobby, video games are to our generation what comic books were back in the 50s: easy targets. If the ECA doesn't try to defend video games and gamers, well given enough time it might turn into accepted fact that video games are things that are bad for society just like comics were made out to be years before. And it doesn't help that even years after these events have happened, then uninformed and mainstream public who here comments like these might think Columbine and Hot Coffee.
Need I remind you of our former attorney friend Mr. Jack Thompson and how he liked to pull out those two cards?
As for your PETA comparison. I'm very much confused as to how you can compare the ECA and PETA. The only thing they have in common is they defend the things they represent:
ECA - Gamers
PETA - Animals
PETA however goes to extreme measures to reach their goals. It's truly despicable. And the ECA never insults and threatens people who bring up video games or gamers in an unflattering way. And you know, the ECA aren't a terrorist group.

Ah, thanks for the links Jack. I'm Australian, so I don't tend to keep up with every piece of news from the US. From reading this particular article it seemed like everyone was jumping to a ridiculous conclusion over a small reference.
I'm aware how insane PETA is. I know what they represent. Because they're so infamous for their extreme measures, they were the first thing that popped into my head, and I intended to use them as a metaphor. I realise this was probably not so clear at the time!

This is kind of good. Personally I do think we should voice what great and positive impacts video games have had on our lives considering all the trashing misinformed news outlets, lawyers, political officials, and worst of all - soccer moms - has done.
Video games taught me half of all I know about technology, and that's carried me a very long way in life - it has become part of my livelihood.
The other half I learned through porn.

i just dont care if he plays games . if he does cool if not cool. it wont affect my time on psn or live.
unless his government health care plan has something about stopping gamers from playing games for hours on end due to health concerns or his cap and trade plans tell me i have to turn my consoles off for some time due to ''green house carbon emissions''
then again his approval rating is sinking like a stonemeaning he doesnt have a mandate on anything.

Here's the news: our country is f'ing broke, but the games industry is doing well. By labeling games as something "bad for kids" this gives them an excuse to tax and regulate.
Think that's nuts? People 30 years ago would probably consider our current "war on smoking" as nuts.
"No new taxes" (hm, sounds like Bush 1) but we're going to be nickel and dimed to death on everything else.
