Ubisoft's Guillemot explains Splinter Cell, Red Steel delays

So, we tuned into Ubisoft's conference call this afternoon in the hopes of gleaning some new information from CEO Yves Guillemot. To our pleasure, Mr. Guillemot provided some details explaining why one of his company's already very delayed major releases would be delayed further. "Red Steel and Splinter Cell are going to greatly benefit from the additional polishing time we are providing and will clearly be among the leading brands on the Wii and 360 for the March quarter," Guillemot said. If you'll recall, Splinter Cell: Conviction had already missed its original 2007 release date.
When asked why these two games were being delayed, Guillemot explained, "The changes on Splinter Cell and Red Steel – it's just a question of polish. The team was asking that they couldn't be with the level of quality on all the maps and all the game for the end of the year, so they had asked for more time to be able to come with a better product, for both of those games. The quality of the games is there for what you've been able to see at E3, but we were not able to have that same quality on the full game of those two products."
Of course, in a conference call full of analysts and investors, the tiny matter of lost sales came up. Guillemot admitted that, for "those two products, it's around a million units" of lost sales in the first month. However, when faced with releasing subpar titles or losing a stronger opening month, Guillemot came down strongly in favor of the latter. "We really think with the level of quality that we'll be able to obtain with the time we give them we will have a long shelf life for those products," he explained. "Now, because [Conviction and Red Steel 2] are launching during that quarter, they will not do as many units for the first month as they would have done in November/December, but we think that on the long-term they can achieve more units than what they would've done."
And it sounds like Ubisoft's patient partner for the still Xbox 360-exclusive Conviction – that would be Microsoft – doesn't mind waiting another couple months. Guillemot says, "We still have the full support of Microsoft because they know that if we can bring a very high-quality game this will help their machine. So we still have the full support from them." And if they deliver a quality game, they'll have the support of gamers as well. Your move, Ubi.

Wow, and to think they were going to release such 'unpolished' games a couple of months ago...
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 27th 2009 7:55PM
I don't think Modern Warfare 2 counts as a bug Ubi...
FNG @ Jul 27th 2009 8:51PM
I was headed here to post just that...
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2009 7:55PM
Well, if they're trying to be the leading brand on either platform, March isn't the time to do it. Speculation puts Super Mario Galaxy 2 sometime in either Q1 or Q2, and that time is fairly swamped for 360, with such high-class fare as Mass Effect 2 and BioShock 2 (though Conviction will be better placed to compete with them than Red Steel 2 with Galaxy 2)
Wiizer (Fix the Comment System) @ Jul 27th 2009 7:58PM
I agree, Mr.!
No one can compete with "It's-a ME, Mario!"
mr nimblewick @ Jul 27th 2009 8:03PM
You really think Galaxy 2 isn't going to be a holiday game?
Wiizer (Fix the Comment System) @ Jul 27th 2009 8:04PM
nimble,
No, because New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to be the holiday game this year.
bVork @ Jul 27th 2009 8:20PM
I'd be willing to bet serious cash that Galaxy 2 will be coming in fall 2010, and nowhere near the beginning of the year.
Mr Khan @ Jul 27th 2009 9:09PM
Think of it this way: EAD Tokyo will have had 2+ years to work on this, a game where the engine already existed, and a great many of the assets already existed
I really think this game will arrive sooner than most expect
atrimus @ Jul 27th 2009 7:57PM
not sure about RS2, but going by the E3 trailers and whatnot, Conviction already looked polished enough (graphically, at least). i expect nothing less than a game that's gonna make my eyes bleed, which won't be good for me since Uncharted 2 will have already accomplished that months prior.
Wiizer (Fix the Comment System) @ Jul 27th 2009 8:00PM
Yeah, Conviction isn't relying on the look of its graphics, I hope. Because Uncharted 2 is definitely not slouchin' in that department...

Say what you want about my tastes, but I enjoyed Red Steel 1. Maybe it's because that was the first Wii game I played (aside from Wii Sports, of course) or maybe I was hyped over the Wii and the *ahem* "next-gen" consoles. I don't know, but I do hope that Red Steel 2 is a decent game. And no, I am DEFINITELY not a Wii fanboy (I own a PS3 and will be soon getting a 360).
Also, I've NEVER played a Splinter Cell game. *runs*
AK @ Jul 27th 2009 8:16PM
I enjoyed BurgerTime on the Intellivision. Maybe it was because it was the first video game I played, I don't know. But I really hope Super BurgerTime Wars is a decent game.
Also, I'm definitely not a Intellivision fanboy, I later owned a Sega Master System and (soon) a NES.
AustinAM @ Jul 27th 2009 8:20PM
How does that contribute to the article or my comment? It's not even clever or witty.
Wiizer (Fix the Comment System) @ Jul 27th 2009 8:28PM
Ever heard of drunk dialing?
This is tipsy commenting...
AK @ Jul 27th 2009 8:46PM
Wiizer gets it.
It contributes to your comment perfectly.
"Say what you want about my tastes"
And I did just that.
Sly @ Jul 27th 2009 10:06PM
he has you there.
whylekat @ Jul 27th 2009 8:00PM
People complain but I'm all for delays like this.. These games will be so much better thanks to 4-6 extra months development.
And to say Splinter Cell was supposed to come out in 2007 is true but I think also a little unfair. they did completely scrap the original version and rework the game from the ground up. I think it'll be worth it.
xera077 @ Jul 27th 2009 8:15PM
This looks familiar..
Remember Brawl?
It was delayed about three times and still came out as a HUGE disappointment.
I wouldn't read too much of this because Red Steel 1 wasn't that good to begin with and even though Splinter Cell maybe awesome it doesn't hold to MGS.
It's just probably Ubisoft being scared that this Fall they won't sell as much as maybe EA or Activision. Remember Beatles Rockband comes out in Sept and MW 2 seems to be the biggest hit since like EVER.
Although I think Ubi is becoming kind of being dumb since only ONE of their top notch franchises is coming this fall. Which is Assassin's Creed on the PSP and AC 2 I believe.
Mr. Fister @ Jul 28th 2009 1:23PM
"Remember Brawl?

Twice. And I wouldn't call a game with a Metacritic score of 93 a huge disappointment.
Cutty @ Jul 27th 2009 9:00PM
Good for Ubisoft. It's disappointing that we'll have to wait longer to play but the delay will almost certainly improve the games. Splinter Cell, in particular, looks set to be worth the wait.
alienterrorist @ Jul 27th 2009 9:06PM
I really wanted Conviction so I hope this will make it even better.
Cheesus(Crust) @ Jul 27th 2009 10:34PM
If it doesn't come for PS3(I'll get one when the Slim comes, first one got stolen) I'll jjust have to torrent this for my PC. Dont get me wrong however, if its good and comes out on PS3, then I will buy that version also.
Arturo @ Jul 27th 2009 10:23PM
Maybe I can catch up on my backlog of games by the time this releases.
Trevor @ Jul 27th 2009 11:43PM
I could add a useful comment to this discussion. But I'd rather say remember at the Ubisoft keynote at E3? Yves is French!!! He sounded French!!! It was cool!!!! His name is awesome!!! I'm done.
Harod Burnett @ Jul 28th 2009 2:35AM
Q1 is going to be crazy .Heavy Rain ,God of War 3 ,Bayonetta,Mass Effect 2 ,Bioshock 2 ,and now these two .I wonder what game will be lost in the wash .
Patronaso @ Jul 28th 2009 10:50AM
Guys also don't forget Microsoft does not have anything to combat GoW3 in March of 2010. Given they've paid for this exclusivity, the crowed line up in the 4th quarter, and the lack of a "blockbuster" potential game in Q1 2010.
alienterrorist @ Jul 28th 2009 10:55PM
That has NOTHING to do with anything about my comment. Thanks for wasting my time.
