Sony confirms EyePet US release this holiday

Previously, the game was only announced for a European release after it was first revealed at Leipzig GC last year. We're happy to see the adorable simian-dog-thing will be making the jump across the Atlantic and won't be suffering from the chronic case of Q1-2010 flu that's making the rounds.
If you're hungry for more, check out Engadget's video from today's event, or our impressions from E3.

Buying it.
bluetev @ Jul 28th 2009 4:51PM
Well its hardly competing with Call of Duty is it?
phinnvr6 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:19PM
So is COD MW2 basically the entire reason for this "Q1 2010 flu"? I guess that seems reasonable because of COD4 being the biggest FPS ever.
Personally I don't even want MW2 as my next FPS. I'm getting either Bad Company 2 or MAG. The small scale of COD games just really throws me off, they just become deathmatch fests. Plus I love vehicles and destructive environments.
PR0F3TA @ Jul 28th 2009 7:48PM
if you love Battlefield then MAG is gonna be just as good if not more (hopefully)
oh and this Eye Pet "game" is everything Natal wants to be, now Sony has come out with it (or the tech) months before them but all that will happen is that fanboys will complain about the price, the one last weakness they have
brazil201 @ Jul 28th 2009 4:51PM
is that a monkey on an air plane wtf
Paul @ Jul 28th 2009 4:58PM
I think it's gizmo. He started shaving a few years ago.
TreyIM @ Jul 28th 2009 6:47PM
Paul - LMAO!!
Solace (Only on PSN) @ Jul 28th 2009 4:52PM
This is awesome.
Better than "Mylo" that is for sure
Paul @ Jul 28th 2009 4:55PM
cmon joystiq has been so good lately. lets not start any wars
bluetev @ Jul 28th 2009 4:57PM
True, you should be careful bcos mylo is the new halo, saying anything negative about it is like shooting Archduke Ferdinand.
Solace (Only on PSN) @ Jul 28th 2009 5:04PM
its true though... who is actually going to buy Mylo? I don't see many parents buying a virtual friend for their children or young adults going out to grab that game. Who is Mylo for exactly? what is its purpose? I can see my family and friends actually having fun with this little pet when they come over. If you were to show your friends and family "Mylo" they'd probably think its creepy just like everyone else did when we first saw "Mylo" at E3.
sony boy @ Jul 28th 2009 5:11PM
i agree. we already have friends online and offline, so why do you need a virtual slave??
godofwar89 PSN id: bleu-manga @ Jul 28th 2009 5:20PM
Mylo? Peter Molyneux? I call smoke and mirrors... oh wait
Petebot330 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:26PM
Yes, they should have made mylo a 21 year old girl.
vidGuy @ Jul 28th 2009 5:41PM
I think Mylo would best serve as the "guide" to Microsoft's next console rather than a stand-alone "game" or application. If he's anything like that damn paperclip from MS Word, though, I hope they make him optional.
Saria the Cat @ Jul 28th 2009 7:31PM
Okay, remind me why we have to always pit the two against each other again?
Solace (Only on PSN) @ Jul 28th 2009 8:13PM
@Saria
Because they both have to do with human interaction using a camera.
sony boy @ Jul 28th 2009 4:54PM
man, sony europe is so creative. eyepet and invizimals are going to be awesome.
Solace (Only on PSN) @ Jul 28th 2009 4:56PM
yeah for sure im getting both
Drew @ Jul 28th 2009 5:51PM
How is eyepet gonna be awesome? I see it turning into something akin to fart apps on IPhone.
squeehunter @ Jul 28th 2009 7:18PM
But I already have three cats and while they can't fly airplanes, they're at least as interesting as this hu-monkey and I don't have to buy a camera.
sc00by_y00 @ Jul 28th 2009 7:20PM
drew how is this akin to a fart app ? Seriously thats a dumb ass thing to say
sony boy @ Jul 28th 2009 8:53PM
@Drew
have you ever played nintendogs??? it was pretty fun.
Bradwart @ Jul 28th 2009 4:56PM
At least Sony is able to do this with a thirty dollar camera, rather than a 100 dollar one. And a year earlier too.
vidGuy @ Jul 28th 2009 4:56PM
I like the augmented reality idea and the tech demo is pretty impressive, but I'm waiting for some real games rather than just a glorified Tamagotchi.
el serpiente @ Jul 28th 2009 5:17PM
Seemed to be a successful model for nintendogs.
XBL: Burritoclock PSN:Herbie Hat @ Jul 28th 2009 5:59PM
Successful Model and Fun game do not necessarily go hand and hand these days....
el serpiente @ Jul 28th 2009 7:32PM
So, uh, people will buy it if it isn't fun?
XBL: Burritoclock PSN:Herbie Hat @ Jul 28th 2009 4:57PM
yay?
Maulok @ Jul 28th 2009 4:57PM
I'm incredibly fascinated by what I've seen of this game, and want to try it.
Kleptomaniac @ Jul 28th 2009 5:00PM
This is whats going to get me to buy a PSEye.
ArchiGamer [thephilosophyofgames.wordpress.com] @ Jul 28th 2009 5:03PM
I'm confused as what exactly this is, but i think I might like it.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:05PM
Remember people, this is the thing that cancelled the getaway and eight days for ps3 (I can live without getaway, but eight days looked awesome). I can already tell this will be a "game" that holds people's attention for 20 minutes before they get tired of it....kinda like every other casual game
Longhorn @ Jul 28th 2009 5:12PM
you really do have something against casual games
Lionp696 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:13PM
I guess a preview of Natal?
Araskaz @ Jul 28th 2009 5:14PM
I can see it inspiring other EyeToy games to come up... which is awesome.
(coming from a big fan of Eight Days)
bluetev @ Jul 28th 2009 5:17PM
Somehow, Uncharted 2 reminds me of eight days - the frantic action and cover system. At least thats not going to get cancelled.
And its quite possible that there are other games in development - Sony Cambridge has 90 staff and they only have LBP PSP listed as per wiki, Sony London is a big team and thats where getaway and 8 days was canned, and they have only Eyetoy and Singstar listed for PS3 - something big being planned there?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:21PM
I think I remember hearing that Naughty Dog took pieces of the awesome animation engine that Eight Days had and put it in U2, so that's why it looks similar.
And yes I do have a grudge against casual games, specially when they do things like cancel real games I'm looking forward to.
HairyBalls @ Jul 28th 2009 5:32PM
So Casual Games aren't real games?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:37PM
Correct, specially this "game". You don't really do anything in it.
Moptimus Slime (The Return of Princess Griffin) @ Jul 28th 2009 5:49PM
you're interacting with a virtual environment
explain to me how that is any different than what you do in Fallout 3 or Mass Effect
XBL: Burritoclock PSN:Herbie Hat @ Jul 28th 2009 5:57PM
I just want to confirm that you are comparing Fallout 3 and Mass Effect to what appears to be a monkey riding a toy airplane in a game called "Eyepet".....
stray_dog_strut @ Jul 28th 2009 5:12PM
Is that a Monchichi on an airplane?
The holidays cant come soon enough.
godofwar89 PSN id: bleu-manga @ Jul 28th 2009 5:17PM
Buying this. I think the bundle with the Eye Toy is $59.99. Anybody know if it has like mini games or something?
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 28th 2009 5:26PM
The whole thing is like one big mini game. Watch some of the demo videos, all you do is pet the thing, or draw something like a toy car for the thing to play with. That's why I'm saying this will hold most people's attention for half an hour before it goes untouched forever.
WREturns (www.theseagullweekly.com) @ Jul 28th 2009 5:30PM
Sounds like tmac thinks the EyePet is going to suffer from "tmac's Wang Syndrome". ; )
johnnynumber5 @ Jul 28th 2009 11:34PM
T-Mac
When you move out of your parents house, get a wife and have kids you will understand that the family doesn't come together around a call of duty death match. Games on the PS3 like Buzz, Singstar, Rockband, Little Big Planet and presumably this eye pet thing bring the family together. Sure, there are things like board games and sports for that as well but if you are a gaming family then this type of stuff is vert attractive. I'm not saying people without that situation would like it but thats what is attracting me to the title. It's also a pretty cool piece of technology.
Get off the soapbox already.
stormtrooper190 PSN= (im not telling you that) @ Jul 29th 2009 11:07AM
its bundled with the PS eye NOT the eyetoy!
TuxBobble @ Jul 28th 2009 5:17PM
Wonder if they'll release it as a PSN download in addition. It seems like the kind of "Home-like" experience that people might want to just pop into for a few minutes, and leave after not too long, without worrying about swapping discs. I'd be more likely to download it than to buy it at retail, personally. Though I would GameFly it first on disc, if it came to that...
The1stMJC @ Jul 28th 2009 5:19PM
Well I have been meaning to buy a PSeye and this bundled with it will get me to buy one.
