Not only did this catch us off guard ... it makes us feel kind of old. Fifteen years ago today, the game industry got on the same page for one shining moment to propose the video game ratings organization, the ESRB, to Congress. It was a moving spirit of cooperation not seen again in the industry until everyone simultaneously decided to start charging $60 for games.
There have been a lot of good times with the ESRB since, but we think we'll always most remember when it tried to stop leaking the existence of games a year ago. How adorable.

My first game was Mortal Kombat, which I think was the game that started ESRB (along with nightrap).

Ah, the memories. It really was a dark and wretched time before the ESRB instilled us with moral values.
Any way, I'm going to celebrate today by ripping out a man's spine and showing it to him. But I won't look at any boobies. ESRB taught me that some boundaries simply shouldn't be crossed.

Sad part is, 15 yrs later, and most people don't even what these are or even what they mean.

Once when I was selling Assassin's Creed to a little boy's mother, I told her, "This game is rated 'Mature' for gore, intense violence, etc." She acted all surprised and said, "Really? Little Billy [(or whatever the kid's name was)], you can't get that. You need to go pick out another game."
Come on! Really?! The fucking words 'ASSASSIN'S CREED' plastered on the front of the box didn't give it away?!
There are no two ways about it: People are just fucking stupid.

The ESRB still isn't old enough to buy M-rated games.

I just stormed out of Gamestop today and told them I'd never shop at another Gamestop again because of their favoring platforms that they can resell the media for at the expense of the PC platform.
So the official Shagi boycott of gamestop has begun...anyone tell me a good alternate place for preordering collectors editions?

That seems like a weird reason to boycott GameStop. I mean, there are a lot of good reasons to boycott GameStop. That just doesn't sound like one of them.
If you are a PC/console gamer, the best way to boycott GameStop is to use Steam, buy your games online, or (if you still want to go to GameStop) only buy new games. GameStop only sees a fraction of a return on their new games sales. The used portion of their business is their main cash cow.

hahah i would have loved to see that sight of nerd rage. That is the one thing I'm missing out by not going to Gamestops - the angry or creepy nerds.
Anyway, I only ever went there because they were the only place that stocks Ace Attorney games on the release date, and AA games are the only ones i *need* to buy on day one.

May I suggest something other than a complete boycott? Something that would hurt a little worse. Let's phrase my suggestion like a meme from a cartoon that was in it's heyday during the founding of the ESRB; Animaniacs, Good Idea-Bad Idea.
Bad Idea- Purchasing games from Gamestop.
Good Idea- Purchasing your games elsewhere and trading them in for cash at Gamestop when you are done.
See, if we stop buying but continue trading they will end up with too much stock and not enough cash. They will have to sell for lower prices if they want to stay in business. Success!!

Wasn't there a rating on NHL '93 when you could beat up Wayne Gretzky and make his head bleed on the ice? I think it only took 2 punches! Good times, good times...

I was in Best Buy looking for something in the game department. This lady was walking by and asked if I had heard of some game that had recently came out. It was a fps with a mature rating, asked me if it was good for a 12 year old. I said well, you shoot and stab other people in it. She says, well that sounds alright, thanks.

Yeah, it's my birthday. So me and the ESRB share a birthday huh? How interesting....

I hope your birthday sucks ESRB, and I hope there isn't a pinata. No wait, I hope there is, and it's filled with tootsie rolls, but they're actually melted then re-solidified poop. Then maybe you'll give up and developers could have greater creative freedom without having to fear about loss of sails because of your ugly logos marking up covers.

So I was about to turn 11 when the ESRB came to be? Wow...I'm pretty sure that I was thinking at the time that this meant nothing but bad things for me and my favorite hobby. I think things have worked out ok though.

For you maybe. Leisure Suit Larry though...
Poor guy had a "hard" enough time gettin' some before the ESRB. They made sure no one else would sell the game.

On a more off-topic note, why are the number of comments on each article always at 38? Why? Is this some kind of sign. You know what, I'm gonna pitch a movie about this strange phenomena to Hollywood, called "The Number 38", starring Jim Carrey.
Oh wait...
