Capcom delays Dark Void into 2010, avoids 'crowded fall game season' - that's it, we quit

Capcom finds itself in just such a position today, as it announces the delay of Dark Void into 2010 "in order to get the game out of the crowded fall game season," the company's Chris Kramer tells Joystiq. The Airtight Games-developed jetpack-'em-up will find a new home in Capcom's fiscal fourth quarter ... which is the increasingly crowded Q1 2010 calendar period, which ends in March.
Precisely what competition could Capcom be so afraid of? GameStop (of course, never an accurate reflection of actual release dates) listed Dark Void as touching down on September 22 ... the same September 22 in which Halo 3 ODST finally stops preparing, and just drops. When asked about the delay, Kramer said, "The move will be great for the game and for gamers: less competition in the market (curse you, Halo!), more time for polish."
So, just to make sure we've got this right: Capcom avoided releasing Dark Void in the relatively open September '09 period to avoid a "crowded" gaming season, opting instead for 2010 ... the same 2010 that now houses release dates for the similarly delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction, Bioshock 2, Singularity, Bayonetta, Red Steel 2, and probably Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption. Oh, as well as the already planned God of War 3, Heavy Rain, MAG, Darksiders, Aliens vs. Predator, Alan Wake, Dante's Inferno, Mass Effect 2, Sin & Punishment 2, White Knight Chronicles, Split/Second, and Capcom's own Dead Rising 2 and Lost Planet 2.
... boy, that right lane is looking awfully appealing again.

That was a great article. My thoughts exactly ...
SugarDaddy @ Jul 30th 2009 2:57PM
I agree. Except I would like to add that Dark Void is at the bottom of my list of interesting games. My bro played Dark Void at comic con and confirmed that it is a gimmicky piece of garbage -- as I suspected.
Capcom has been hugely disappointing this year after Bionic Commando and RE5 (which I absolutely hated despite its success).
fffunfarm06 @ Jul 30th 2009 3:00PM
probably the greatest article in months, right next to justins DIY MW2 kit.
infinity ward employees are gonna get some fat ass bonus checks this christmas. jesus christ.
Fullmetal Salchemist @ Jul 30th 2009 3:03PM
I saw Dark Void being played at Comic-Con. I didn't really feel like playing it, because I already saw The Rocketeer.
Trickob @ Jul 30th 2009 3:07PM
don't quit until Scribblenauts delays...
Paul @ Jul 30th 2009 3:18PM
I suppose it's not a bright idea to release a game in between halo and MW2. MS and activision have probably filled every advertising space available in the world for the last 4 months of the year.
and poor uncharted 2 is sandwiched right in the middle.
Chromekreeper @ Jul 30th 2009 3:54PM
its not like theres a holiday where people buy a large amount of video games wait a minute, CHRISTMAS!!!
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Jul 30th 2009 8:24PM
@ Sugar Daddy
They did give us Street Fighter IV... I agree on RE 5 being crap. It is not Resident Evil it is a co-op action game that ruined Wesker for good. No puzzles no real zombies (no running! gimmie dead rising style hordes!). Bionic I have not played. We always bitch about all the games coming out in fall and Capcom has been doing well with January releases so...
Mopo @ Jul 31st 2009 12:45PM
I tried to play Bionic Commando on the PC, but I had to stop. I cannot stress how I hate games made for 360 that has been ported to the PC. It frustrates me to no end. I don't use a controller on my PC and never will. Also, it kept displaying 360 controls on screen how to move, jump, grab, etc, that does me no good on my keyboard and mouse. You can turn it off, but come on!

Or your "Bro" just sucks at videogames like most people who go to trade shows. That could be a possibility. Ya think?
I've heard promising things from of Dark Void from Video Game Journalist, but they don't know shit. Thay just play games all day.
Vegnagun bwf @ Aug 2nd 2009 4:04PM
Yeah, Chris really knocked it out of the park with all that extra research.
Mr.Chrome @ Jul 30th 2009 2:09PM
haha this suck for real 2010 will be more fun
copa @ Jul 30th 2009 2:22PM
Yup, this year is starting to look an awful lot like 2006. A whole bunch of games were behind schedule, and ended up getting pushed back to 'Spring 2007'. And whatever bullshit excuses they gave, the simple fact is they were behind schedule, and the games were simply not ready for a Holiday 2006 release.
Lo and behold, a good chunk of the games that got pushed back to Spring 2007 ended up getting delayed again until Holiday 2007. And Holiday 2007 was the best game season in a decade.
So keep your eye on the companies that claim they are trying to avoid a crowded holiday this year. Because they are the same companies that will hold onto these titles until Holiday 2010 to try and capitalize on all those Christmas sales.
NaeemTHM @ Jul 30th 2009 3:17PM
My wallet STILL pains from Holiday 2007. Halo 3, CoD4, Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, Crysis, Assassin's Creed...the list goes on and on.
Unfortunately it looks like I will once again be very poor in 2010 ;___;
Kizzle @ Aug 3rd 2009 2:59PM
copa - sorry, 2001 beats 2007. Not only did we get Halo, MGS2, and GTA III at the same time, we got two console launches.
Storm Eagle @ Jul 30th 2009 2:09PM
"Crowded Fall Season"?? Talk about jumping (or flying) out of the frying pan and into the fire. I think if they toughed it out a little longer, they'd find that they could have the whole season to themselves.
Storm Eagle @ Jul 30th 2009 2:13PM
I just read the headline and then posted. It's good to see everyone (except Capcom, apparently) is thinking the same thing here. I can only suspect that the delay was caused by something other than competition.
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 30th 2009 2:11PM
Don't forget Mass Effect 2, FF-13, and Gran Turismo 5...
But I agree, I'm starting to give up on this holiday season
Storm Eagle @ Jul 30th 2009 2:16PM
You really confused me for a second there, Tmac. For future reference, the correct way to abbreviate a Final Fantasy game is in roman numerals.
FFXIII - There. Now I know what game that is. :)
FF-13 - This suggests some sort of air combat game to me. :(
(To be taken lightly)
tmacairjordan87 @ Jul 30th 2009 2:21PM
It's a JRPG, it's lucky I refer to it at all :P
Mr Khan @ Jul 30th 2009 3:12PM
And an off-side possibility of Mario Galaxy 2, as well as all you and the article listed
Oh, and possibly Heart Gold and Soul Silver, too. But this is just me speculating
KillaChaos @ Jul 30th 2009 4:30PM
Gran Turismo 5, Duke Nukem Forever...
bongoes @ Jul 30th 2009 4:32PM
Khan isn't that when Other M is supposed to be out too, or was that later?
Old Professor Zertoss @ Jul 30th 2009 2:11PM
Scribblenauts has all the competition fleeing to 2010, including games that weren't even competing with it.
Wiizer (MW2 Sweatshop Entrepreneur) @ Jul 30th 2009 2:12PM
Wow, I think it's smart... But, I don't think I've ever seen games move out of the way of others so quickly...
ilovethewaggle @ Jul 30th 2009 2:36PM
Maybe I could use Scribblenauts to summon all these delayed games and play them all on my DS. SCORE!
Storm Eagle @ Jul 30th 2009 2:44PM
@waggle If you played Mass Effect on the iPhone, you wouldn't be saying that....
Ender @ Jul 30th 2009 10:06PM
storm eagle i take it you have played the iphone mass effect, is it really that bad and did it really tell much story, since thats the best part of mass effect
Dave @ Jul 30th 2009 2:12PM
This recent series of 2010 pushes has me roflmao :D
Dirty @ Jul 30th 2009 2:12PM
2010 the year of gaming! 09 not so much.
Jerses @ Jul 30th 2009 2:25PM

dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 30th 2009 2:49PM
2009 is the year of Brutal Legend, Scribblenauts, and L4D2. Nothing else is necessary.
dark_inchworm (on Steam!) dark inchworm (on XBL!) @ Jul 31st 2009 1:40AM
I was KIDDING dammit :P
Though if I had to pick three, those would be my three.
Solace (Only on PSN) @ Jul 30th 2009 2:15PM
Don't forget Gran Turismo 5 for 2010
Dirty @ Jul 30th 2009 2:24PM
Hahahah..... that gave me quite a chuckle.
JXCgunrunna @ Jul 30th 2009 2:42PM
I actually laughed at Dirty's response.
Paul @ Jul 30th 2009 3:21PM
don't you mean gran turismo forever?
Lunastra78 (PSN: lunastra78) @ Jul 30th 2009 3:22PM
And I'm just laughing because everyone else is!
Shimrra @ Jul 30th 2009 2:16PM
Good god man is the list for 2010 going to stop? At this rate there is only going to barely be a strong line up of game releases for Xmas season.
That said I dont mind the delay to much since I am still back logged on my games. I still havent finished Bioshock...Damn you Battlefield 1943!!!!!!!!!
JUNG GUNS @ Jul 30th 2009 2:32PM
you have no excuse for not finishing Bioshock by now.
Sean @ Jul 30th 2009 5:01PM
Well, he doesn't need to finish Bioshock, He just need to get to the part where your identity is revealed. That last boss was not very good.
Silicon Siren @ Aug 6th 2009 9:31PM
I know how you feel Shimrra. Bioshock was such a chore, I'd rather eat my veggies and do homework than be forced to finish that game.
Shimrra @ Aug 6th 2009 10:13PM
@ Silicon Siren - Yeah man see I'm glad you understand what I am going thru. On top of that I am stuck in bed screwing both your mom and dad. So much to do I mean your dad just loves it when I pink sock him ;) dont worry tho I'll give you another little brother :D
Mazrael @ Jul 30th 2009 2:17PM
In other words, the game just couldn't compete against other releases, and need to find a quiet month, when gamers will be in need of something to play...
Wiizer (MW2 Sweatshop Entrepreneur) @ Jul 30th 2009 2:21PM
Hello, sir! We've been looking for you!
Is your game ready yet?....... GREAT! Now, we'd like to release it around the time Halo is released.
There's just no room to release it at any other time, but then. We hope you understand.
profeteer @ Jul 30th 2009 2:22PM
That's a little harsh. It's going up against established behemoths (on the same day, no doubt, as the biggest of all, arguably).
I'm really looking forward to this, and if it's good I'd like it to do well, so in that respect I'm glad it's shifting. I was a little scared for it, to be honest; people only have to much money and time. On the other hand -- god dammit I wanted to fly jetpack so bad.
Hyamzy @ Jul 30th 2009 2:18PM
It's actually annoying how loads of must have games are coming out next year, I just don't have the money... :(
BIGGEN (LIVE-PSN: BIGGEN1103) @ Jul 30th 2009 4:04PM
maybe by then you will?
Kewlrats @ Jul 30th 2009 2:18PM
From one car guy to a non-car guy, I applaud your analogy. Well done, and well said, sir.
Petebot330 @ Jul 30th 2009 2:20PM
This seems more like a summer title anyway--big, dumb action game (in the good way).
I'm just mad that Alpha Protocol and Dragon Age are releasing within a week of each other--that means I have to choose between two giant time-sucks.
