DSi firmware v1.4 drops in Japan, Facebook connectivity arrives alongside [update]

Nintendo announced during E3 that the functionality would be hitting American DSis "this fall." We've asked the company for a more firm release date in other territories and will update this post if we hear back. In the meantime, check out a quick walkthrough that our pal Ittousai from Engadget Japan put together for us, just after the break.
Update: Nintendo has responded to us by saying "We have not announced a launch date."

ArchiGamer [thephilosophyofgames.wordpress.com] @ Jul 30th 2009 2:05AM
Maybe, I don't remember anymore.....could have been that pot i had recently....or the hash.....where am I?
linebeginstoblur @ Jul 30th 2009 1:53AM
So both Nintendo and Microsoft are working on connections with social networks. I really hope Sony doesn't let this opportunity pass by and actually works on similar functionality. I love me my social media and I love me my PlayStations.
GohanGVO @ Jul 30th 2009 12:23PM
Both the PS3 and PSP can connect to the internet and use web browsers. So, are they not technically already there?
ColorblindMonk @ Jul 30th 2009 1:53AM
Woah, when did Facebook get so popular? 360 is one thing, but I totally forgot about the DSi. Myspace? Never heard of it.
xSHiNOx @ Jul 30th 2009 2:01AM
myspace sucks. for me it started out with asianavenue for the asians then it was xanga, then myspace, and now facebook. twitter is coming along but that thing is like some blog you can follow instead of meeting new people
Zerokku @ Jul 30th 2009 4:18AM
People seemed to flock to it because it was more streamlined, and less shitty personal html.
I'd love to use facebook, but almost all of my friends still use myspace instead, so it's pointless to move to another networking service.
Mr Khan @ Jul 30th 2009 11:56AM
Facebook became popular when it appeared that MySpace was being overrun by the dregs of society.
The fun part is that those "dregs" will move up too, and "ruin" facebook for the hipsters eventually, and they'll have to move on to somewhere else. Then the cycle will begin anew
SecretAgentHam @ Jul 30th 2009 1:58AM
must get this on my DSi....
make it happen nintendo!
megapenguinx @ Jul 30th 2009 3:34AM
Wait, I must ask you! Are you on the escapist?
rTwelve @ Jul 30th 2009 2:30AM
wait, xxxx@xxxx.xx.xx? can i have a C, a J, and a P.... and i'd like to buy an O
ChuckBartowski @ Jul 30th 2009 2:30AM
I must also point out it might try to kill flash carts for loading homebrew and backups. Actually its very likely. They usually try in each update. If it says anything about behind the scenes or anything similiar to that, than thats probably the case.
RupeeClock @ Jul 30th 2009 5:30AM
GBAtemp.net is already reporting that the update does indeed kill DSi flashcarts.

ChuckBartowski @ Jul 30th 2009 12:05PM
Yep. Every single one... (Mass Panic at GBATemp ensues)
RupeeClock @ Jul 30th 2009 12:12PM
Nah, not a mass panic, people are more cool-headed at GBAtemp then you think.
Many DSi compatible carts are updateable themselves, Acekard 2i, Supercard DSi One and M3i Zero to my knowledge can be updated to my knowledge.
Some others like the non-piracy iPlayer cannot though.
Roto13 @ Jul 30th 2009 2:53AM
The DSi is the only console or handheld where Facebook connectivity might actually be useful, if only for uploading pictures.
Azbulldog @ Jul 30th 2009 3:10AM
Playstation cake, on my DSi?!
Sam @ Jul 30th 2009 3:19AM
It's more likely than you think.
Sam @ Jul 30th 2009 3:18AM
Darn. I thought we'd get it by the summer. I'm going to be going on a trip and my only internet-compatible device is my DSi.
Do you know whether it actually makes it possible to visit Facebook and/or update your status? Because I've tried going on there with my DSi, but it always runs out of memory long before the page can fully load.
xSHiNOx @ Jul 30th 2009 3:44AM
isnt there a facebook lite or something?
Cube @ Jul 30th 2009 7:15AM
Go to http://iphone.facebook.com/ on the DSi browser.
This update is also out in Europe, along with an update for the DSi Browser (found in the DSi Store).
Meh @ Jul 30th 2009 4:39AM
HEY, WE KNOW HIs PASSWORD NOW!!!!!!11
Ben Gilbert @ Jul 30th 2009 9:51AM
Hahaha, crazy as it sounds, I changed my password just for Ittousai to make this video and back again right afterward. The things we do for you!
Meh @ Jul 30th 2009 11:36AM
No shit, lol.
Rob @ Jul 30th 2009 5:29AM
How do you find out if there is a new firmware available?
On the Wii it's easy as it has WiiConnect24 and the blue pulsing light. None of which the DSi has. So how do you know/where do you go to download the firmware?
Christopher @ Jul 30th 2009 7:59AM
A notification of a new update appears when you open up the DSi Shop or check for updates in the settings.
James @ Jul 30th 2009 6:37AM
I really don't want facebook to get any more popular in Japan. I don't want to have to deal with friends from there too. Only one or two or them really know what it is right now.
BrokenTriforce @ Jul 30th 2009 6:32AM
Wow. Anybody else who has a large fanbase of rabid 16-year-old emo girls that must know exactly what you are doing at the exact moment that you are doing it needs this to make life easier.
Meh @ Jul 30th 2009 1:35PM
So you'll block the lens to say "nothing"?
BrokenTriforce @ Jul 30th 2009 3:44PM
ha
MRLN @ Jul 30th 2009 9:19AM
Which reminds me that I need a DSi. Does GameStop still do those $70 trade-ins for DS Lites?
oogieboogie004 @ Jul 30th 2009 11:14AM
I believe it's available in Australia and Europe now too, check for the update

I'm kind of surprised that they'd offer Facebook connectivity in Japan before oh, say, Mixi. I didn't think Facebook was that popular over there.
Danny @ Jul 30th 2009 6:34PM
I was about to write the exact same thing, the number of Japanese mixi users outweighs facebook by a lot.
"As of May 2008, mixi had over 10 million users and an 80% share of the social networking market in Japan."
Loren @ Jul 30th 2009 6:38PM
Yeah, I only have one Japanese friend on Facebook, and as far as I know she's only there to keep in touch with American friends from when she was an exchange student here.
I guess there was probably money involved.
