CVG details an extensive 10-page feature on id Software's Rage in the latest issue of UK games magazine Edge. The piece includes confirmation by John Carmack that the Xbox 360 version of the game will run at a brisk 60 frames per second, but that he has found PS3 to be at a disadvantage to Microsoft's console in terms of rendering power. "The PS3 lags a little bit behind in terms of getting the performance out of it," he said.
As a result, Edge reports that the game runs at "just 20-30fps" on Sony's console. Carmack places the blame on the PS3's GPU -- the RSX -- saying that, "The rasterizer is just a little bit slower -- no two ways about that...the RSX is slower than what we have in the 360." He sees both consoles as being comparable in terms of raw processing power, however. "The CPU is about the same, but the 360 makes it easier to split things off," he told the magazine. "...that's what a lot of the work has been, splitting it all into jobs on the PS3."
Now, before you go making a comment you can't take back, know that the Edge article doesn't clarify whether or not the performance of the PS3 version will be improved prior to release. It's also telling that Carmack states that the PS3 is only "a little bit slower" than 360 in his findings -- if that's the case, we can't imagine that the finished will run at fully half the speed.
Update: Further comments from the Edge piece reveal that the developer is indeed aiming for parity between all platforms. "Everything is designed as a 60 hertz game. We expect this to be 60 hertz on every supported platform."

Did anyone else read the Game Informer article about Rage and instantly think, "So it's Fallout, but for those who thought that Fallout 3 didn't have enough shooting things?"

Yes. Just about to say the same thing! Guess they don't have to worry about a lawsuit now eh?

Just because a game has a strikingly similar OPENING STORYLINE premise, does not mean the gameplay will be at all the same. Fallout 3 had the obnoxious VATS system, crappy shooting mechanics, annoying map-following gameplay, redundant (boring) enemies, and a huge world with nothing to do in. However it had a great atmosphere and premise (and dialog), so hopefully Rage can keep the atmosphere but have more interesting core gameplay (the dialog will be missed, however, Rage isn't about role playing).

Fallout 3 was an RPG that happened to have guns, Rage is a first person shooter.

"please excuse the fanboy in me but...
lazy ass devs...find out how to work on the ps3, games like killzone2 and mgs4 show that incredible things can be done on it. "
Yep, that's John Carmack. A lazy ass dev.
Also, the low framerate of Killzone 2 is the main thing that kept me from buying it. If a FPS isn't running at 60fps, I actually get motion sickness. Same reason I never got into Halo 3.

people who give the lazy developers comment are by far some of the most ignorant people i've met on the internet. you have absolutely no clue how much diligence and work it requires just to render a single stupid wooden box in the current gen of games.
the thing is ps3 does things differently the reason why kz2 looks the way it does is because its built specifically for the hardware (specialized lighting, QAA to work with motion blur, differed lighting, spu utilization) even the way the game is rendered, id has always been a pc developer they will work closest to what they know, there is no point in them investing an absurd amount of resources into ps3 development just to match the quality of 360/pc platform they're not first party.
its a breakdown of the consoles architecture the problem is the ps3, it takes probably twice the amount of work to build a game on the ps3 to match the level of graphical polish compared to a 360 game and probably 4 times the amount of work to surpass it. on top of that ps3 has the smallest userbase. logically speaking it just lacks logic to put that much investment into a console espcially if you're a multiplat software developer.

Didn't those games take like 4 or more years to make? I wonder how long id's been working on Rage for the PS3?

I love it when folks like you make responses calling dev's lazy because they can't pump out games as hard as you think they should or how good a second party or first party dev team does their game.
Case in point games like killzone, mgs4, ect look the way they do and handle the way they do on the ps3 is because they are made specifically for the ps3. When a game goes multiplatform shit changes real quick. Sometimes the ps3 may require devs to jump through hoops of fire and cross spiked pits just to get it to run and look closely as the 360 and pc look.
That is one of the sacrifices sony has to face when they made the ps3. They didn't have to make it exactly like the 360 but they did make it so unique that its architecture and design is different from a norm that modern day devs are used to.
It's funny how folks tend to forget just 8 or so years ago how when the original xbox was released and how much power it had over the ps2 yet when multiplatform games for it were released they more or less gravitated toward how the ps2 was designed. Because for most devs that was easiest go around and a staple for them when making multiplatform games.

Wipeout isn't a constant 1080p @ 60 fps either. It's a great game but they use some neat tricks.

I don't think a single console game this generation has run at a constant 60 FPS in true 1080p.
