New Star Trek Online screens? You bet your asteroid

click to
Apart from being the "final frontier," this latest round of shots from Cryptic's Star Trek Online leads us to believe it's also absolutely jam-packed with asteroids, most of which are exploding. Sure, there are some pics of away teams down on the surface of various planets -- but asteroids, exploding asteroids! There's one universal quality evident in the massive quantity of screens in our gallery below: they look really, really nice. In fact, we're tempted to go as far as to say that, visually, the game ... rocks.

The visuals are looking pretty good.
I have never played an MMO before, but I will play this one. I'm a classic Trek geek from way back. It trumps all else, really.

Yay a game about intergalactic diplomacy! NOW IN MMO FORMAT!
I'd rather play SW:TOR thank you

and so begins the interweb flame war...

Make it so #1

All I can say is WOO AKIRA CLASS STARSHIP FOR THE WIN.
SuckItTrebek @ Jul 31st 2009 1:39AM
Nice, subtle Doctor Who reference there sir. :)
I mostly agree with the "woo Akira" comment-I wish they'd gone with the original Akira design though. Good ol ILM, losing the master files for their First Contact ships....it's a miracle those guys are still around.

All the space shots look quite pretty, but up close the buildings and the models for the players look a bit meh in comparison.
Dosn't matter, glad to see a trek game just sad that it's an MMO :(

Yeah and WoW has the best textures of any game ever. :|
This isn't Crysis, you aren't going to be zoomed in to look at every rivet (not that Starfleet ships have rivets) whilst flying around.

At least it has a decent art style, besides I said i didn't really care.
abelpc @ Jul 30th 2009 10:56PM
Eve Online for the win.
SuckItTrebek @ Jul 31st 2009 1:39AM
Eve Online:not cutting edge, and still %1000 better looking than this.
Stevetrop @ Jul 31st 2009 2:35AM
Its almost spooky thinking about being zerged by a number of borg ships.
Janichsan @ Jul 31st 2009 4:11AM
Geez - why the heck must every bloody space game go with that romanticised vision of space, with bright colourful nebula, fancy planets and asteroid belts that are denser than traffic during rush hour in New York?
My plea to Cryptic: watch the goddamn shows and movies! Star Trek does not look like this!

It's a love letter to the galaxy. Baby, we're coming home.
Snowblind @ Jul 31st 2009 6:24AM
My biggest problem with this, is that it doesn't look much like Star Trek. All the newly designed ships don't even remotely fit in with the actual ones from Trek.
Kinsey @ Jul 31st 2009 12:42PM
hopefully this game will make up for the obimination of the last movie.
It was a good movie just not a very giood start trek movie.
BRPD Cop @ Jul 31st 2009 10:26PM
I can't wait any more! Give it to me now!
