Here's a brief summary of the financial figures featured in Sony's Q1 sales report: Everything went down. The company sold 1.1 million PlayStation 3 units and 1.3 million PSP units during this year's first quarter -- a sheer drop from Q1 2008, where the company moved 1.6 million and 3.7 million units, respectively. Overall sales for the PlayStation sector (which includes Viao PC sales) were down 37.4 percent year over year, reaching ¥246.8 billion ($2.571 billion) in sales. Sony chalked up the decline to "lower game and Vaio PC sales."
Software sales for the two systems also took a substantial hit -- Sony's PS3 software only sold 14.8 million units; a large drop from the 22.8 million first-party PS3 games sold in the same time period last year. PSP fared no better, falling from 11.8 million sold in Q1 2008 to 8.3 million sold in 2009.
The only exception to the aforementioned summary was PS2 hardware sales, which increased from 1.51 million units sold in the first quarter of 2008 to 1.6 million units sold in Q1 2009. Unfortunately, the wheels fell off the PS2 software sales wagon this year, with game sales falling from 19.3 million in Q1 2008 to 8.5 million in 2009.

I don't know about everyone else, but as far as game sales go, I'm still finishing off the two outstanding titles I bought at the end of last year (Valkyria Chronicles and Saints Row 2).
I haven't even really been looking for new games, apart from picking up Flower from PSN.

Even though I don't think a price drop is necessary anyone who can't see the value in what they get is just blind or well, your average consumer. What I mean by that is someone who sees 199.00 and immediately assumes it to be the same as 399.00 but at a cheaper price which everyone here knows simply isn't true. When you get an arcade you upgrade it until you get darn near 400 bucks into it so the difference in console prices is negligible. Not to mention the recurring cost of live but let's not get into that one.
Either way consumers are waiting, the rumors have been flying, and anyone who doesn't already have a PS3 is waiting on a price drop so units aren't moving. Nobody wants to buy something that is going to be 50 or very doubtful 100 dollars cheaper the next week or month. I am waiting on the price drop so that I can pick up a 360 because I am sure they will follow suit with one of their own.
As for all the fanboy stuff love, hate, or fall somewhere in between the last thing you want is for either of the three companies to fail and leave the market a one console future is not good for consumers, developers would love it poor lazy chaps but it wouldn't be good for the rest of us.

I have a PS3. I love it. best system out there as far as I'm concerned. great deal for what you get. and their 1st party games are the unrivaled. for me the system equal parts movies and game player.
but here's the thing...you can pick up an arcade xbox for $199 and a gold starter pack (key pad, headset, 12 months gold and PGR4) for $59, now think about how many 20gb hard drives there are floating around used. all that for $300ish....that's a pretty good deal. now if you prefer online gaming and MS's exclusives over sony's why wouldn't you buiy an xbox? I'm just saying, people like them some online shooters, and Microsoft delivers that.
it's no secret why sony is behind...the majority has bad taste in games. ZING!

Sony needs to fire their PR people and their current CEO's and adopt a take on Atlus' business model towards localization, distribution and especially advertising and marketing of their games. +Especially Atlus' marketing methods+. I've bought more Atlus games in the past eight months than from any other of Sony's publishers. Atlus' marketing makes me want to buy games which were nowhere near my gaming radar - they put it out there, tease us during development & localization time - but most importantly they keep it out there and make gamers like me hungry for more.

It's no doubt Sony needs to drop the price. The system has lost momentum because of the competition being lower. Even if once you get all the stuff to equal the PS3 the 360 costs around the same amount. Sony has a great system but they need a better price point.

PS3 is really a great product. I love mine for Blue Rays and the Sony exclusives. Its too bad the PS3 launched after the 360, cost more and the games basically look the same.
MSFT won by starting earlier.
As always, Nintendo has lots more hardware sales, but isn't playing in the HD arena.

Sony should just a release the PS4. Yea, I said it. Now that developer's are finally understanding the architecture, Sony should jump to the PS4. I'm not saying they should start over, but rather they should build on what they have.
Technology's come quite a ways since the PS3 was designed. It shouldn't cost that much to add more RAM, improve the GPU and put in a faster Blu-ray drive. They should stick with the Cell processor though. They've invested too much in that to just toss it aside.
The PS3 was supposed to be THE Blu-ray player for households, yet Sony cannabilized their PS3 sales when they started releasing stand-alone players that were cheaper than the PS3. In my opinion the PS3 was clearly never meant to be a market leading game system. Since it served its purpose in allowing Sony to win the format war it's time to move on and release the PS4. And please, don't try to make a computer. Make a damn game console.

Man, a PS3 would be really nice to have. You got Uncharted, inFAMOUS, LittleBigPlanet, all of that good stuff. Personally, I think it's true that people simply have bad taste. And I think Sony, in the beginning, should have released two versions of the PS3: A DVD version and a Blu-Ray version. However, that would cost them a lot on software sales, having to sell two versions of one game. But, it would probably increase the hardware sales, because the DVD version would rival the price of the 360.

Exactly. And it's appalling that all of these people deny these great titles. If only I had the chance to play these games, that would be awesome.

All fanboy venting aside, this is not good for Sony at all. That's because 3rd party companies are looking at these numbers (1st party companies are probably looking at them too) and seeing this as another reason to reconsider their support for the ps3. Ultimately for software companies profit is what matters and if you don't sell games you don't make a profit.

Well, this was Q1. If I'm right about the cutoffs of quarter to quarter, then Q2 will see better stats. After all, many many people it seems have gone out to buy their first PSP or PS3 simply because FFVII came out for the PSN and Dissidia is being released late next month for the PSP.

I had been saying this for years. Sony really should have never placed blu-ray players in the ps3 at all. The blu-ray drives are what delayed the ps3 release giving microsoft enough time to establish a lead over them and it continues to contribute to Sony's dilemma with a ps3 price drop. They lose so much money on every ps3 sold because of the blu-ray players included with each one that they really can't afford to drop the price on the system. Unless of course they can make up the loss of profit from hardware on software sales and as everyone can see from these news reports and numbers that isn't happening. Sony became greedy in their desire to win the battle over hd dvd by using the ps3 as a means to inflate their blu-ray numbers enough to convince movie studious to drop hd dvd support. Unfortunately, for Sony it looks like it may cost them the videogame console war. And before someone labels me as a Sony hater I want to say I just like to discuss the news and give my opinions as such. I own several Sony products in my home including a ps3 and 2 stand alone blu-ray players. This is just the truth guys. Sony is in trouble and while the long term verdict is still out a price cut may not be enough at this point to save the ps3. I firmly believe the only thing keeping the ps3 from leaving the race altogether is EA and Activision. EA killed off the dreamcast by refusing to put madden on the system in the late 90's and should one of the big 3rd party companies decide to do the same here with the ps3 it could be the end for the system.

I completely agree. I don't care for Sony much, but if they had not tied BRD to the PlayStation brand, I have no doubts that they would have done much, much better. Probably better than Microsoft / Xbox 360 at this point.
If PS3 didn't have BRD, it would have been much cheaper out of the gate. It would have been much cheaper to produce, and there wouldn't have been shortages initially as BRD parts slowed production. They wouldn't have had to sit around waiting for BRD to get finished before releasing, so they could have put out the PS3 in line or at least only a few months behind the 360. And if they had waited, they could have put better parts inside the PS3 for games, ensuring that it was at least a noticeably better product than the 360.
Then again, Sony might be making up for the lost opportunity with the PS3 by licensing out BRD, so who knows whether BRD was the right thing to do? Personally, I don't like the idea of companies trying to tie their proprietary media to gaming devices... it sets a really, really bad precedent for future game consoles.

For really hardcore gamers that go on blogs and are up to date like us, then yes, that could've affected it. But for other hardcore and regular gamers that aren't aware of these blogs, then no, that wouldn't necessarily be true. Honestly, who knows. I mean, my best guess is that there are many different factors affecting the sales, and most of them are probably price.

According to this article in the New York TImes...
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/business/global/31sony.html?_r=1&ref=business
Sony has lost money on TVs for five straight years! SONY has a lot more problems that just the gaming division.
Now we see why they don't lower price on the PS3. They can't. I also completely understand now why they are charging a premium on the PSP go for early adopters.
Yikes things do not look good for SONY in the short term. I also don't see the yen depreciating anytime soon.

The Ironing is Delicious. Just shy of three years ago with the release of the ps3 soon approaching sony thought they were gods of gaming. Now to be be fare they did make a powerful name of themselves in the console industry and the playstation brand was well known.
How ever them coming in thinking they can make a powerful system at a high price and make the costumers bend to them had a double edge to it. Fate played a hard hand with the economic turmoil that ravaged the world and american's having to tighten their wallet.
This situation could be used as a learning lesson for all three console makers.

Now this is just a far off guess..., but seeing as how the sony has this whole "10 year lifespan" and the developers are groaning as it is (though software development does seem to be moving in PS3's direction..) maybe the PS4 will actually be an addon to the PS3?
I hope it is. I dont see myself spending 500 dollars on a console ever again, unless there is a marked departure in concept (sorry wii, graphics matter).
Oh and sony, boohoo you arent making money, but this whole console business is about losing on the hardware. So sack up and cut the damn price you pussies.

PS4 will probably cost 500 or less... unless Sony tries to tie it to another proprietary media format.
And I wouldn't expect it to be an add-on - unless you want it to follow the 32X's glorious failure.

Sony has some great titles. I think we can all agree on that. But after the huge success of the PS2, they've been pretty pompous, and obviously expected the PS3 to be another great victory. In my opinion, it was a success, not basing this on sales, but based on the fact that Sony delivered some great experiences.

Not only that, the Japanese consoles are competing with each other, more than they are with the only American console.

Oh gosh... Does everyone forget that the PS2 was being outsold by its older, grey box.. the PlayStation?
For... TWO YEARS?
And how much did I pay for my ps2? The launch price. and back then the launch price of a ps2 would be equal to what our ps3 launch price was. It was also my first dvd player, back when dvd players were insanely priced. How many DreamCast fanboys ran around saying PS2 IS GONNA LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE1111!!1!11!1111!!!!!!!!!!!
My ps3 is my first blu ray player - and plenty buy it because it is the cheapest *good* blu ray player.. and besides, if there were no Blu ray drive in it...
How would MGS4 exist?
